Treasure - the fact that those are not formal ranking system that lends actual credibility to posters is why they aren't that big of a deal.  To me i don't think CM as a site needs to start patting people on the head and trying to validate people by saying hey look how popular this person is because people are clicking thumbs up on their posts.  To me, this would be CM sanctioning an credibility to people that they really cannot back up because of the anomity of the posters.

If people choose to do it in their signature lines -- that is their personal doing and it's not CM sanctioned.  Personally, i do think the mods should disallow any signature comments that imply a personal group or connection on a personal level with the mods as that leads to people wondering just how unbiased mods can be when they have people as part of their group or posse or sucking up to them in signature lines.  

The number of posting and the levels indicating posts posted is not a VALIDATION concept.  I think most people just don't like the vanilla cone because what it signifies in this lifestyle, versus what the vanilla cone stands for.   I think if they would change that icon to something more BDSM related -- it may not have the dislike many people have

The wording now under nicknames really doesn't mean anything as people can change it by simply emailing a mod i believe and telling the mod what they want it to say.  A newbie can do so if they wish -- at least that's what i understand -- so the wording under a nickname has no meaning anymore.  If not everyone can do it then it shouldn't be done because it does show a favoritism by the mods and lends credit to the fact they are biased and have created a conflict of interest.

IF we have to have something with regard to posts outside of counting how many they have, i don't think it should validate individual posters but stick strictly to ranking only the post.  I hope they don't.

It is a good idea in theory, i just don't think THIS website could carry it off in the spirit it is designed.

Personally, I think any kind of "ranking", whether of posts or people, is kind of silly.  Regardless of whether something or someone has a high ranking or a low ranking isn't going to change my own opinion of the post or the person. 

I am especially against anything that directly or indirectly "ranks" individual people based on how well other people like what they had to say.  As I understand what was initially presented, the idea of a person's personal "ranking" would be dependant on how many "good" posts that person made.  (perhaps I'm wrong)  But let's take the case of two hypothetical people:

The first person posts numerous times every day...let's say 20 times on an average.  Now, let's assume that of those 20 posts 10 are great posts that receive votes, but the other 10 are complete and utter garbage.  So for one day that person gets their ranking bolstered by 10, even though half the time they appear to be complete nitwits.

The second person only posts 5 times in a whole month, and every post gets a good ranking vote.

So...who, in the end, appears to be the person with the highest ranking? 

For the whole thing to work and be accurate it would have to show what percentage of total posts for each person received a "good" rating.  For that to happen every person would have to vote on each and every post of every thread they read.  I don't see that as realistic at all.  I know I'm not going to take the time to vote on every post I read.  Are you?

My Suggestions

1) Kill Nocturnal stalker for not being funny and continuously derailing this thread.

2) I like the idea of a "hot topic" for it would lead people to a lively discussion. Otherwise interesting threads will get lost in the white noise that is CM. For instance, I only saw this thread because someone posted on it while I happen to be on.

3) Any type of a ranking system is a horrible idea.

4) The political forum has evolved into a total fuckfest, not the good kind. Get rid of it. It is no longer any place to exchange ideas or philosophies but now only a place for the ignorant to post and show no contrition when proven wrong or to engage in meaningful conversation. You will lose no one that contributes anything to this site.

5) Things change and all and all, I guess the site is fine. Things are different now, it has morphed and I am not sure if it is in a favorable way or not. Maybe it is better for the owners and maybe you are getting more influx than ever before. It is such a subjective feeling. It seems that things were discussed in a more intelligent fashion and there was more of a charge in the site. The cast has changed, I don't see or feel the same level of intelligence, humor or camaraderie. I think it was merely that the stars aligned and a very interesting group of people found this site at around the same time. Who knows, maybe the next "ass to mouth gal" is logging in for the first time today. Things will get better, maybe.

I hold nothing but fond memories for CM. But I say, Goddam! It was such a fucking hoot!

The "hot topic" flag we had at the other place only flagged due to number of hits on the thread in a short period of time. It doesn't mean it was a good thread, and it also means that if two people start going at each other like children on the thread, rather than good discussion, that's still going to flag the topic, which will indeed attract other people to it......so it doesn't indicate quality, only a quick number of hits that tallied up.

I agree that the site, IMO, isn't all that bad as it is now. There are a lot of "wouldn't it be nice if's" to consider, but I think most of them have negative qualities that outweigh the positive.

This, I agree with.  If I'm not mistaken, one of the reasons the Politics section was created was to remove political posts from the Off-Topic area where many are not interested and were understandably frustrated by the discussions.

P&R may not be some people's cup of tea, but it is a very active forum.

i think it's a really bad idea. Ranking ANYTHING contributes to the idea that there is a clique, and encourages conformity.

As far as the ranking system goes, there are a good number of people who really enjoy it when Hanners goes off on one of her "flay him alive" rants against somebody who posts a stupid question and will vote for those just because they are funny, not because they are actually good posts. There are people, like me, who will give a bad rating to almost anything Awareness posts because, not only do I disagree with 99% of what he posts,  I seriously dislike him for the things he has said about me and my friends. I am honest enough to admit I would use a ranking system to dis him and make him look bad if it were in place, unless it really was a superb post, in which case I would still be sorely tempted.

A ranking system will only lead to empty competitions and an increase in cliquish behavior, something I am led to believe we are all supposed to be opposed to. <Though it would seem that the two main anti-clique advocates, NS and Awareness, are indeed the leaders of a growing little clique who's purpose is to trash a few specific members. How's that for ironic?>

I agree as well.  I don't like rankings.  If it were put to a vote, I'd vote no.

I have no idea what programming would be involved, but it is already set that when a thread has a post, it goes to the top of the list. If it STAYED at the top of the list, once it hit a certain number, then you would wind up with PAGES of stickies before you got to new threads. Yes, there probably is a way around that if the first scenario is possible of moving to the top and keeping it there, but.........puts on demure soft voice, I have no idea of the cost and the time.I also know the technical team has an unbelievable amount of things on their plate they are working on.

I do know there have been some good ideas and even though this was my idea, I have already decided that I am going to make a point of letting the owners know of this thread, and have in fact, mentioned some of them in a phone conversation to them. I do want to go ahead and say this, I asked for ideas because I truly am interested, and to the best of my knowledge this had never been asked before. What I was hoping to glean (and there have been some golden nuggets for sure in all areas) was thoughts on the non-technical aspects on how to improve or tweak things. I am not the tech team and as I said, they are overloaded already(remember our staffing [;)]). Does that mean that some of this won't get implemented in the future, either near or far, because of a thought or idea expressed in this thread? Hell no, I have made note of those too, because some were really awesome, and hope they WILL be implemented at some point.

When I made this thread, as some noted, I was very careful not to try to misrepresent it. I did not say when or if there would be changes, procedural or "bells and whistles" wise, because I am not in a position, especially with no knowledge of the points at the time, or have the authority to make promises in certain areas until I check with the owners. It may take some time to make the changes that I see that can be made, some because those items involve more than just my actions, such as inclusion of the tech team etc.

This one will be on my list though, to think about, if a solution to everything becoming a sticky and staying there is found. (That also does not involve moderators going through threads for strictly administrative purposes of archiving sorting etc, At this time, I think everyone agrees that there are more important functions for them) [;)]

Thanks VAA. something that increases your workload (because yeah I'm fairly sure you guys have lives [;)]) is a non-starter for me. Frankly there are other things that are higher on my wish list. Increasing the workload of the techies (visions of pale dudes who haven't seen sun in years) is also a non-starter for me.

I do want to thank you for asking us what we would like to see changed, added, whatever. The only other board I've been on that asked is Fet and they seem to ask more than they do. Even if this stuff never gets done it's nice that you asked.

I think giving politics its own corral was one of the best changes ever made at CM.
