Obama mentioned tweets in his speech tonight. Who would have thought 10 years ago that the president would use that word in a speech? Shows just how ubiquitous twitter has become.
I admit that I am twitter illiterate. I never saw much reason to do it, as opposed to FB, or IMs. So, those of you who do use twitter, what do you like about it? What does it allow you to do, that you can't do on FB, for example?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I'm the opposite of you Iamsemisweet. The only social media I have is Twitter. I use it more for following than for posting, although I did posting and interacting with others back when there was a threat of a tsunami hitting the islands. Sometimes there are tweets that offer good information. For example, a local vegetarian grocery store was offering free cooking classes and when they tweeted about a particular class, I was able to attend it. I likely would have missed it had I not seen it on Twitter, even though their web site lists the classes. I just don't visit their web site that often. Why visit a multitude of web sites when you can get key bits all on Twitter? Another one I follow offers "positive inspiration" posts, as well as quotes. So, for me, it offers a quick means of viewing interesting information, and sometimes funny commentary. I like to read all of the tweets for those I follow, so I keep the number of people I follow to a minimum. Some celebrity types use it to forward their agenda in terms of selling a product. I quit following two well known fitness trainers because of it.

As for what it allows me to do that I can't do on Facebook? I have no idea since I've never used Facebook. Since I didn't register with my real name and provided an e-mail address I seldom use, I also find it's a good place to blow off steam and bitch about work and other minor things. ;)

I don't ever post on twitter but I do like that I can get info quickly from others in a concise manner. I tweet posts from my local police department, where the local street food trucks will be when I want to grab a quick bite around town, info from events and happenings around the city. Just today I was able to get a bunch of tweets about certain streets and highways being closed due to flooding and police blocking off a street due to a shooting.

Like you it is hard for me to grasp twitter.  I do use facebook.    I chalk it up to my age- which is 47.

Lucylastic -> RE: Twitter (9/9/2011 10:12:01 AM)

I have a twitter account, but I rarely use it, altho..I admit I use it to be able to get hockey and football games on line.I follow a few people, but I could get into it, I just dont have the "urge" to get into it any more than I am.

Lockit -> RE: Twitter (9/9/2011 1:05:52 PM)

I don't use it, have thought about it, but not really there yet... but today I read about someone being banned from twitter. How the hell do you do that? lol

Lucylastic -> RE: Twitter (9/9/2011 1:22:57 PM)

harassment or stalking probably..there was a story a few weeks ago about someone who sent 8000 tweets harrassing someone.
I believe it was on P&R section about first ammendment rights and harrassment/stalking.

DeviantlyD -> RE: Twitter (9/9/2011 11:29:05 PM)

Gee Lockit....do you think that person could have possibly done that? :D

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 7:19:15 AM)

Hanners just started a twitter account, and we discovered something interesting. They automatically added Obama to her following list. Gee, I wonder who they support, eh?[:D]

Lucylastic -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 7:24:20 AM)

THats something new, Ive never had anyone auto added?

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 7:27:13 AM)

As soon as she created the account, he was on the list.

Lucylastic -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 7:29:12 AM)

oh Im not disputing what you are sayin:) just surprised.

MissImmortalPain -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 7:37:43 AM)

I have a twitter account, but I stoped being active on is some time ago. I became quickly annoyed at the thought of being told ...what someone is having for lunch, who is fighting with who's girlfriend/boyfriend/lover/manager/recording label...I'm sure you get the point. I am however a fan of the anti-social network idea. My facebook even says "Anti social means I don't want to be your friend...go away" I'm all kinds of unfriendly like that.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 7:45:33 AM)

i don't have a twitter; i don't really understand it. =p
but i guess, since you "follow" people instead of "friend" people, maybe there's an additional bit of distance that FB doesn't have. i mean, some people on FB think they're REALLY entitled to your business.

i dunno, i've been teetering on the brink of deleting all my social networking stuff.

crazyml -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 8:16:36 AM)

Oh yeah - world of difference between twitter and FB.

I've instituted a rule for facebook friend requests - If I've not had a beer with the requester or if I've not fucked the requester and I don't want to fuck the requester then I ignore it. I don't mind who follows me on twitter tho

Lucylastic -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 8:22:28 AM)

I only go there to find out where hockey/football is, otherwise I check it once a week, its definitely not something I use regularly
Altho Ihave been watching the "occupy" listsbut with so much going on, I could be there all day and not read the same thing twice, so its a definite time drain if you let it.
Ive now got my facebook useage down to once a day.

ProlificNeeds -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 8:31:19 AM)

I like the idea that social media can change the world, but that's as much bad as good. I have FB but don't use it much, I look at it when bored to see what stupid things my relatives have been up to (all important updates are sent via e-mail or phone calls within the family).

While tweeting is a good concept for say, alerting family and friends with updates during a natural disaster or other fast paced events of import, the majority of the time it's used for what I consider B.S. so it holds no appeal for me.

littlewonder -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 8:42:00 AM)

I used to not like Twitter but the more I use it the more I like it. It's easy to use and I can keep up with current events happening all over the world and with my family without having to read paragraphs upon paragraphs of useless information. It's quick and to the point.

tj444 -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 9:12:14 AM)

I have not used twitter or facebook or any of that social media stuff but i will get into all that, but for mostly business reasons to network and learn from people who are doers, to exchange ideas, to be inspired. There will be perhaps other areas too such as fitness and health or some of my other interests. Twits posting tweets about what they are thinking about when they are on the crapper just has no appeal to me..

I think for my purposes twitter will be better than fb since fb seems pretty closed off now, i mean the people there. If the only way you can be a fb friend is to know someone, how do you even know you want to if you cant even read their profile to see if you have any common interests? That is what i mean by closed off, its gone very clique-y.. imo..

littlewonder -> RE: Twitter (10/6/2011 9:49:53 AM)

I only use FB for friends and family so it doesn't matter to me what others are doing on FB or if I want to be their "friend". If I don't know you in real life, face to face and we are actually friends or family that I like, then I simply don't bother with them. Why would I want to know a total stranger on FB? Seems like a waste of time.
