ORIGINAL: tweakabelle First Quaker have the Israelis bitten off more than they can chew? Turkey is a NATO member. IIRC Art 9 of the NATO Charter means all member Nations will assist any member nation attacked by an outsider. So, if Israel attacks Turkish vessels escorting an aid flotilla on the high seas, it will be risking war with NATO. I doubt that even the Israelis will be belligerent enough to do that - even school yard bullies are careful only to pick on the weak. So Netanyahu has put Israel in a lose-lose situation with Turkey. How long before the Israeli people realise what a disaster Likud and Bibi and the settlements/colonies are for their international standing? His sole foreign policy talents seem to be antagonising friends and trashing the Israel brand. If I were the Izzies, I woudl be good little boys and girls until the "Arab Spring" matures. As I noted, no Arab politician ever went wrong denouncing Israel, and there are a lot of them with time on their hands and reputations to make, now the Islamic Middle East is a free for all politically. As for NATO, who knows what they might do in such a case, but shooting up a Turkish warship is likely a crime that carries it's own inherent punishment if you are the Israelis, the Turks won't need to go to NATO to rectify the problem. On the World military pecking order the Turks rank number 6 right behind the UK, and the Isrealites rank #10 - GlobalFirepower.com (GFP) (there is a country to country comparison link on the bottom, if you want to see just how one sided the naval battle would be, and their air forces are more or less equal..) Sure the Israelis could in theory come out on top, but getting into such a fight would insure they could not beat the next contender, coming down the road from Persia. And the minute they used nukes on a NATO member, or on a Islamic country for that matter . . . And, as I noted, you can bet the locals would all be sporting the Turkish team colors at this matchup. Israel is getting pretty well isolated under the current government it has.
