Sanity -> Perry OpEd On Social Security (9/12/2011 10:09:07 AM)

Far left liars and propagandists are out bullying the elderly, trying to convince them that Texas Governor and GOP Presidential candidate Rick Perry wants to do away with their Social Security., and "push granny off a cliff... "

In an OpEd in todays USAToday Governor Perry set the record straight:

quote:

Rick Perry: I am going to be honest with the American people

The first step to fixing a problem is honestly admitting there is a problem. America's goal must be to fix Social Security by making it more financially sound and sustainable for the long term. But Americans deserve a frank and honest discussion of the dire financial challenges facing the nearly 80-year-old program.

As I said at the Reagan Library recently, Social Security benefits for current recipients and those nearing retirement must be protected. For younger workers, we must consider reforms to make Social Security financially viable.

These are the hard facts: Social Security's unfunded liability is calculated in the trillions of dollars. Last year, annual Social Security outlays exceeded annual revenues for the first time since 1983. The Congressional Budget Office projects that outlays will be roughly 5% greater than revenues over the next five years, worsening as more and more Baby Boomers retire.

By 2037, retirees will only get roughly 76 cents back for every dollar that is put into Social Security unless reforms are implemented. Imagine how long a traditional retirement or investment plan could survive if it projected investors would lose 24% of their money?

Perry has never endorsed Texas seceding from the union, either...  [;)]

Our conclusion was that in a politically theatrical moment, Perry stated an old (and factually incorrect) claim that Texas retains the right to leave the union. That is not the same as his saying giddyap, I want to leave. Perry didn’t call for secession then and hasn’t since.

So he lied about Texas being able to leave?

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Perry OpEd On Social Security (9/12/2011 10:38:37 AM)

Perry may well live to regret the "Ponzi scheme" nonsense. Pawlenty's endorsement of Romney is a blow to Perry as well.

Lest anyone not fully understand TGs quote, the next sentence is "We rate Carney’s statement False." referring to Carney claiming that Perry said he wanted to secede. That was never an issue to anyone who read what he said, and was thoroughly debunked on this board long before Carney misstated it.

pahunkboy -> RE: Perry OpEd On Social Security (9/12/2011 10:41:50 AM)

I am not voting for Perry.

I never said Carney's accusation was accurate. No where at all. The part I highlighted was what I was referring too. That was determined by the same people Sanity said debunked the claim.... something Fact Check did in August as well.

Btw, Fox's headline about the event in question....

Governor Says Texans May Want to Secede From Union But Probably Won't

I would be interested in seeing some proof of the "bullying the eldery" that a certain idiot poster suggested?
And no I do not consider repeating,or even highlighting a candidate's own words to be a form of bullying.
Please furnish proof or examples of bullying.....I would like to know who or what I should denounce....picking on the elderly is so not nice [:)]

I would also like to see the evidence from a certain poster that the eldarly are being bullied by Democrats. Since the poster is known to 'make shit up'. Shouldn't we have some accountibility and responsibility on these here forums for what is said?

What an unbelievable asshole,I urge everyone to actually click on the insane ones link...rather than wind up at Perry's op-ed piece you will be taken to USA Today's editorial in which they convincingly debunk Perry's ponzi scheme statement...( within this link is another link that will finally get you to Perry's op- Ed wherein he tries to walk back the cat on his statement...without actually apologizing for his silly mischaracterization of a program which has played a large ,probably the largest part,in reducing elderly poverty to about 10% today from what USA Today cites experts who believe was at 50% at the time of the depression)

Yeah, moron... Im an asshole for posting the wrong link... I bet it really hurts to be as stupid as you! [:D]

Heres the link

Apparently, Perrys OpEd was in response to the left leaning USAToday rant against the man

A related opinion article thats kind of interesting

quote:

Is Rick Perry the Br'er Rabbit of the Republican Field?

Why do Republican Gov. Rick Perry’s recent comments about Social Security remind me of his remarks a few years back about Texas possibly seceding from the Union?  Perry recently went on a wholesale attack against the Social Security system, saying it’s completely broken, a failure, and a lie to younger people. They were pretty harsh and pointed words, and  pundits, including top GOP strategist Karl Rove, have roundly panned the Texan for his comments. Let me tell you where the Washington, D.C., punditocracy just might be off base and misunderstanding the power of his message.

In Perry’s primary race against popular Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in 2010, he raised the possibility of Texas seceding as part of his message that the federal government was busted and people in Washington were disconnected from the lives of average Americans. Many folks criticized his remarks, and I got call after call from pundits and reporters saying that Perry was toast.  I cautioned my callers about underestimating the anti-federal-government sentiment he had tapped into, and I shared my view that his secession comments would in the end help him in his race. Perry went on to win in a landslide against Hutchison—and at the same time, beating much of the Republican establishment, including Rove and former Vice President Dick Cheney. The Senate primary race in Texas was a factor in the budding tea party movement, and Perry was one of the first elected officials to tap into the energy and power of that movement.

Governor Rick Perry may not be the ideal candidate but he beats the guy who once listed "the Reverend" Jeremiah Wright as his spiritual adviser all to hell...
