I voted "kept within reason"

Most everyone here knows Ive had a sock or two in the past. Hell, THIS account was originally a sock. But only once when I was a regular poster here 4-5 years ago did I have a completely hidden sock...did it because I really wanted to post a question that wouldnt get answers that were skewed by others previous opinions of me....maybe that was childish, I dont know. But it worked...

I originally created this sock because it was impossible to get any privacy on my long-time well known account. I was having relationship troubles and I wanted to avoid the questioning without giving up my friends here.

Most likely this account will soon be going bye-bye also.....only to be replaced by yet another sock. Of course...if collarme allowed profile name changes I wouldnt have to keep going to that extreme..... *hint* *hint* *hint* (are the PTB listening?)

I voted for within reason.

Arswine? TheRaptorJesus? ILustAfterPeon? Valid. Funny.

The woman who keeps making a new profile every five seconds (for what reason I genuinely cannot fathom)? Not so much.

Oh no - ILustAfterPeon should *never* go. She's a diamond.

Could that person be using those various profiles to harass other members, send messages from multiple accounts because people have blocked them, or even to sway polls like this one?  What about things like attempting to avoid moderation or having various screen names to jump into threads to support an original that they, themselves, have written to make it look like six different people to demean another poster?

On the other hand, it is pretty ridiculous when someone makes a sock puppet just to support themselves, or hide behind their assinocity.

The above is how I would define sock puppet, and all other examples a reasonable use of multiple profiles, so I voted Yes.

But I wouldn't want to make a change that would kill these characters:

Marc2b -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 12:19:22 PM)

I voted to keep it within reason. As you pointed out, there are valid reasons for creating more than one profile but sock puppets should not be allowed for the purposes of harrasment. While I myself am a near dunder-head when it comes to computer stuff I have a friend who does know his stuff. He told me once that sites like this can identify sock puppets from the IP address, but he also told me that there are ways around that... so I guess they are limited in what they can do.

LaTigresse -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 12:25:30 PM)

I've got to admit I would like to see them all disappear. A few are humorous, I get that, but they tend to only be humorous to a few that are 'in the know'. I can't be arsed to figure out who is really who, so I tend to not even care. It's just.....meh. Silliness.

I also don't get the concept of creating one just to ask a question......I mean, seriously.

I don't see there ever being a change because of logistics. And clearly, there are quite a few households represented on here where, I have to assume, more than one person uses the same computer at times.

DesFIP -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 12:35:17 PM)

The problem is that for most of us, any profile would qualify as a sock. I could pass any of you on the street and not be able to identify you. Or you me, unless I was carrying a plate of cookies, for that matter.

There's no practical way of doing anything about it, except for the site demanding copies of our driver's licenses and credit cards. And if they did, most of us would go elsewhere.

Those of us who KNOW each other are in the clique, and you wouldnt want THAT dreaded fate, now would you![;)]

Lucylastic -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 1:19:58 PM)

I get the need for alternate names if you forget or change your online name, my only problem is those that use them to post under a name to back up an argument, appear to be hiding and doing drive bys and those intent to fuck with people.
I know with the software you can change some parameters Im guesssing a forum/db mysql tech could make the changes, but on the whole, its not THAT much of a big deal. Cut em off if they get reported for a good reason.

My name is the guywiththebigsuckabledick, and do you know how many people are dying for that, guarding it with my life.

actually, I own a profile called MrWannamaker on this site. I snatched that puppy up a long time ago, how fuckin cute am I?

There used to be a smirkingsheep (female submissive) on this site and I thought that was a gangbusters nick.

Hell, *I* do. Far, far too many threads turn into nasty, spiteful, small-minded crap here. If I *really* had a problem - and one about which I felt in any way vulnerable - I wouldn't post it here under my usual nick. I'd use a sock-puppet - or stick to talking privately with the people I trust. The latter is much more likely.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 1:41:31 PM)

I'd like to think that you'd ask one of us privately, Darling.

I have friends that have socks on Fetl for asking questions about fetishes that they don't want generally known...and I can see the sense in that, really. It's not like there's privacy on the net.

I usually lack the ability to discern such subterfuges, but when I do, I realize how pathetic such persons are. For that reason I say: give them as much rope and as many sock-puppets as they want, because eventually they will hang themselves.

There'd be just a few people, hon, yourself being one, of course.

Pfft. I've struggled hard with this over the years, but I just can't bring myself to see unkind people as wise. The two things just don't go together for me.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 2:04:06 PM)

I have known many unkind people who were intelligent, but wise, not so much. I think that compassion and empathy are elements of wisdom.

Epytropos -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 2:06:43 PM)

I find the concept of wisdom as a measurable trait strange. How do we even define that to begin quantifying?

You're right, it is difficult to quantify, perhaps impossible. Our receptivity to wisdom is tied into emotions, our perceptions of the speaker, our needs at the time. Wise to some might be foolish to others.

Yay truisms!

mnottertail -> RE: Is it time for sock puppets to go? (9/13/2011 2:13:15 PM)

Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself.

But how do we know that you aren't just a sockpuppet of one of them? See, that's why I don't care at all.

I know who 3 of the people on these boards are, one of them shares this account with me, and we sleep with the other two every night. Other than that you are all just random people on the net posting under assumed names. What makes one fake name more fake than another?

Very true. Someone I might have seen as wise when I was 12, not so much so when I was 22. Someone I would have thought wise when I was 22, I might consider a blithering idiot now.
