I think it depends on where the individual is it. I can see a need for a sock puppet sometimes (as when asking an ultra personal question).

Back when I DJed online, I had many different nicks, and changed nicks often according to what station I worked for. Why? Because being an online DJ means being in chat rooms you may not want to frequent (except it's required of the station) and attracting way too many trolls and stalkers.

It was just easier to change nicks often and tell my real friends who I was.

Here? I have had more than one nick, but only use one at a time. When I changed from daintydimples to Chatte, I announced it in my sig line.

No one is forcing me to be here, I know how to use the block and hide features, so having other posters know who I am is not an issue.
