The fallout of the current campaign finance structure, is that the republican party has tons of meny to spend in media markets - I've been getting my Dad's mail, it's full of conservative contribution appeals, all apparently from concerned citizens groups, all very expensive print jobs - I'm lucky to get a postcard form the Dems, the pub literature looks like nothing quite so much as those bogus sweepstakes that were ubiquitous in the Eighties, fancy borders and official looking seals, flourishing signatures by people with impressive sounding but meaningless titles - it's flat out mass marketing, throw in the media organs, and that shit costs money, big money, no way this is grassroots.
The point is, there's so much of it, guys like sanity (?) are inundated with so much hysterical spin, constant and unrelenting, they have long since ceased to go to any of the work required to form an independent thought, they just regurgitate the script, so often one finds them arguing some obscure point that has nothing to do with the question, it's some fragment of their alternate universe that makes sense only to them - in this case, the Stalin reference has to do with the fact that the neo-cons are all Trotskyites, and harbor a deep and abiding hatred - not for communism, mind you, but for Stalin specifically, sicne he dashed all their dreams of power and glory there - a lot like the way they vilify Clinton, regardless of what kind of president he was, they can't claim any credit for it, so that's enough to earn their eternal emnity.
It's really kind of amusing, the whole Stalin biz is so cold war, it truly has no relevance, just bunch of bitter old men chewing on ancient grievances, talking through the sanity puppet - like a scratchy recording, needle stuck, repeating endlessly.
