I like those. Words and phrases that you would've heard in the early 1900's late 1800's that you can still occaisionally hear now if you listen.
Down South here in S. Carolina I've noticed some people using the phrase, "over yonder."
I can picture a guy in a cowboy hat replying to another when asked where the well is; "over yonder"
What words and terms like that have you heard that struck you as interesting?

In an out of the way corner of R.I. there is a town called Woonsocket. The only thing it's had as a claim to fame in decades is that Richard Gere, famous actor and gerbil rancher, filmed a movie called Hachi there.
   But in that town, there are still many old folks of french extraction who use the phrases "There you" ("Come by my house after work there you"), and the phrase "side by each" ("I have three houses side by each").

Over yonder is used here a lot by the older folks.

It's ketchin'....contagious

aint..isnt

Book learnin'...school

Bedstead......bed

agin......against

nary......none

rern't....ruined

baccy....tobacco (usually chewing)

hitched....married

Satan......Democrat (just kidding about that last one)

I saw the thread and noticed who started it....and assumed it was autobiographical...yanno archaic folks and there fears....lol.

Stern, Hill, those are some good ones! Real "Americana."
Oh, another thing we hear on the news here is when someone's charged with a "Lynching."
I don't know what constitutes a "lynching."

Pop... certainly having been in NH you've hear the famous "well no" that they utter after giving you a 1/2 hour of directions and then remember they're tarrin route 16... "Ya keep goin about 5 miles and then turn left at wolfeboro center ... Wellllll No... on second thought they're tarrin route 16"
  And a little east of there you'll even hear the shared NH/ Maine "ya can't get there from heyah"

AND if you're really lucky, at sometime you may have heard a Laconia girl say "Cawk Suckah" (In whgich case I apologize for my cousin Judy's decorum).

heh...all those terms are still common today where I grew up. Then again when you visit where I'm from it's like you're going back in time heh.

I guess I'm just so used to hearing them that they don't even seem archaic or out of place to me.

Oh hey... I just thought of one more... around here and probably lots of other places where there was once a timber culture, they use the phrase "fool killer". Used to describe a branch on a tree that's "about to go" and all it needs is some unsuspecting woodsman to touch the trunk hard enough as he makes his way through the woods

Hiked through there a bit on the trail in my 20s... It's beautiful there. Hope it's been able to stay that way.

another one I just remembered...jagoff....as in "you are such a jagoff" and no it doesn't mean jackoff. Jag is a PA Dutch slang word for goofball. We gots all kinds of things like this in PA Dutch country. lol

One my dad used to use: loplollygagged = meaning things are kind of messed up.  For instance, "I let the new guy set things up and he got it all loplollygagged."

And one from my step-dad: twitterpated = that feeling a person gets when they have just met someone they really like and they can't keep their mind on what they are doing.

Edited to add - another one from my dad: cross-catiwampus = out of square.  Kind of like loplollygagged but usually more two-dimensional.
