So you said about wearing pants to work. So you are never going to wear dresses or anything above the ankle? Make sure you're very assured on that answer. Let me give you an example of a tattoo I somewhat regret. I have a tattoo behind my ear...a small honeybee. It represents my first name which means honeybee in Greek. I like my tattoo. I like the symbolism but at my former job I got in trouble for wearing my hair in a ponytail or in a bun because when I did you could see the tattoo. Visibility of any tattoos at all, even a slight scene was completely against the rules and could get you immediately fired. Wearing my hair down at work every single day for 5 years was annoying and got in my way constantly all day long. But it was the price I paid for having a tattoo there.

So it's just something you may want to be completely sure of before you get that tattoo.  Make sure you understand that when the office is warm you won't be able to go in wearing a dress or a skirt. You'll be hot most likely and you'll feel miserable all day because of that..all because of a tattoo.

I have nothing against tattoos at all since I have them but just be sure you understand the consequences fully.

ORIGINAL: Blackbird90

I am currently 21 years old and have been in the lifestyle for many years. I am interested in getting my first tattoo that would represent this without being extremely obvious. After taking into consideration my hopeful career path, I decided to get a tattoo of a chain around either one or both of my ankles, though I haven't gotten it yet. I spoke to a previous dom who told me that as a dom, he would never want to take me out to nicer places if he knew that the tattoo was there. Having never thought of that, I am curious to see if others here would agree before I get this tattoo.

The Dom who said he wouldn't have wanted the tattoo on you is expressing a personal preference which he is entitled to, it really has nothing to do with him being a Dom- that part makes no sense.

I would say get any kind of tattoo that is meaningful to you and that you feel has lasting relevance to you life and make sure it's in a private location. You're fairly young. You haven't experienced some things yet. What if say you found the best job you had ever had and wanted it very badly, and they turned you down because of a visible tattoo? It happens. People do make judgements based on what they see, it's disingenuous to think that they don't. Certain things reflect badly in the work place so I'd keep those things to myself in order to give myself the most advantages and choices possible. In the end it's not giving in to the powers that be, it's giving yourself the most tools to work with and kicking ass getting where you want to be.

Limiting yourself almost guarantees that you'll run into a situation where it will put you at a disadvantage. Littlewonder made an excellent point about wanting to wear different things in different weather or just because, but being limited in that by your tattoo location choice.

I have a tattoo and I'll get another someday, and they'll be in places that not everyone can see. My 21 year old has a tattoo and chose to put it in an area that is covered up for work since he doesn't want to be limited in the eventual jobs that he'll be offered when he's out of college. I feel if you don't plan wisely for that eventuality, then when it happens you'll be kicking yourself. Of course I can't prove that but why limit your choices or find yourself discrimated against someday?

Have you considered a UV tattoo?
You will always know it is there, but will be able to make the conscious choice of when to show it by being in a room with a black light. The rest of the time if you get the right color, it will be invisible on your body.
You'll pop at clubs though. :)

ETA
Also when you are older.. you can just forget about it, and not worry about a saggy tattoo.

peppermint -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/18/2011 1:51:38 PM)

I agree with littlwonder. Get a tattoo if you want one, however, realize the consequences of that tattoo and what it might mean career wise. I have 3 tattoos. I also made sure they were put in places where they were completely unseen IF I needed them to be unseen. I have seen several young people your age limit their choice of careers with a poorly placed tattoo. Only you can make the choice as to whether the tattoo that can be seen is worth what you might have to give up.

JanahX -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/19/2011 6:57:48 PM)

I just recently dropped three grand, and a year of painful laser removal getting a celtic arm band and a small hyrogliph on my shoulderblade tats removed.
I loved them at the time, then .. kind of liked them, then not so much liked them, then I just hated them.

Sucked ass.

SailingBum -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/19/2011 9:43:36 PM)

round here they are called tramp stamps

littlewonder -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/19/2011 9:55:15 PM)

a tramp stamp around here is a tattoo at the small of one's back, not on your ankles or anywhere else.

Doomkittie -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/21/2011 3:42:11 AM)

Yes, if someone dislikes tattoo's that is there right, it is also your right to express your self on your body if you wish.

Yes, tattoo's age. I had my first tattoo done 26 years ago. Last year I finished my back, from my neck to my bum and had a 1/2 sleeve done. I turned 45 yesterday. I can cover all my tattoo's.

I only regret the ones in my inner heel. The skin is thin and it has worn, around your ankle will also wear more than your back.

It is a choice you have to live with, I have never regretted mine and people have been shocked when they find out a third of my body is tattoo'd. It doesnt change the person I am at all.

TomcatLXVI -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/22/2011 9:39:49 PM)

I think tattoos can be a wonderful expression of your personal taste and individuality. I have two, one on each bicep. I thought long and hard about what I wanted and waited til I was positive that each was exactly what I wanted. If you don't have good taste or much individuality, tats can look really silly. Generally, tats that you can cover up decrease your chances of being embarrassed by your tats. But then, the easier a tat is to cover up, the harder it is to show off. And what's the point of having a tat if you can't show it off? Coming from my point of view, I'd say a chain around your ankle is great. Go for the high-end metallic ink and you'll even fool some of the people some of the time.

HoustonMaster47 -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (9/28/2011 6:20:24 PM)

As a business owner, I advise having your tats where they can be easily covered. My current office manager has one on her ankle. She's the best employee I've ever had, and I'm not even sure I would have hired her had I seen the tat. So, maybe that's stupid and unfair, but it's the world we live in. *Ducking for cover*

mons -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/3/2011 4:29:21 AM)

hello
my son wanted to have tatto's , I will tell you what i told him.  I told
him, when he goes for a job and he was about your age at the time,
even though many people have them, they are older and have made it in their in the career they have wanted!
They are often artist whom have made their names well known, and have made it in
the careers they wanted too!  Then I told him when you have reach this goal and have made it
so that no matter where you go, your expected and in the work force it does matter, make sure you have enough money not to be turn down for an important work you want to give or make (he is an artist) when he can walk into
your place and you are the owner then you can get a tatto!  Now mind everyone this is my son! I had and still have high standards for my sons and daughter!! But I also let them have a free hand at expression of theirselves, hair cut anything wild was ok, I taught them speech does matter when you are speaking to others!!!!! Tattoo's are not something even in this day and age for women, people just have these different ideals about them!  I do not care if someone has them some are beautiful but not one the face!  He is where he wants to be he never did get the tattoo!  If you do get them make it where no one can see!
Your 21 and still so young, think about it first this is your body your marking, it is forever!  Good Luck on what you choose  it is your choice, i wanted to get my nose pierced, but I never did!  Also do it for you, I do not remmeber if this was for a Dom or not?  Found something you can  try, do the false ones first, I have ed, ed and eddie but after a time i was like "I want them off and fast!  Again good luck with your choice!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/3/2011 4:41:18 AM)

like the others have said, try to plan a little for the future when getting the tattoo -- if you can solemnly vow to never wear anything that shows your ankles in the workplace, then go for it, but that's quite a proclamation. what kind of work are you wanting to go into?
my late Dude had tattoos on his forearms and had a job that involved being outside in the sun for hours. but he couldn't show those tattoos, so he had to wear long sleeved shirts. in the blazing heat of the summer. ugh. =p

if i ever get one, i'll get it somewhere where it can easily be covered if i want it to be.

littlewonder -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/3/2011 8:37:25 AM)

I figured I'd come back to this just because it's relevent to me right now and maybe it will give you a little bit of thought before rushing into that tattoo.

My daughter's boyfriend has been wanting a job with a certain office for a long time now. He went to take all the physicals, exams, etc...passed them all with flying colors. Went to get his fingerprints and photo taken and they told him he's disqualified because of his tattoos. He has an arm tattoo. Yup it could be covered up by a long sleeve shirt but they don't care. Any tats at all..visible or not are prohibited.

So just because you can cover them up doesn't always mean much. So again, do your homework with the type of long term job you are seeking.

igor2003 -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/3/2011 8:55:39 PM)

I'm another one that, as a rule, doesn't like tattoos...especially on women, and especially the big, garish tattoos.  It saddens me when I see the number of people these days that have them, but I would be the first to defend your right to get one if you want it.

Having said that, however, I will admit that small, discreet tattoos in locations that are shared only with someone that you are intimate with can be kind of sexy.

Notsweet -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/3/2011 9:03:47 PM)

Now, I'm not a Master, but I've been around the block so many times, I've worn out my tread. Please take a piece of advice from an old lady.

Gravity sucks. It really does. Just remember, at your young age, with tight, firm, smooth skin--one day the Tweety Bird on your ass is gonna be Big Bird on your thigh.

Just sayin'.

Tantriqu -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/3/2011 9:37:34 PM)

I'm in the no-tattoo camp; they're rarely as pretty as you think they're going to be and they will only get uglier with time, they're expensive to get and far, far, more expensive to get rid of [and look at the scars on Jolie's and Fox's pretty arms], and now they're a sign of being a follower.

And don't forget the health risks: in Canada, tattoo parlours must be licensed, so the inspectors can tell you who has good sterile technique and who doesn't wear masks, but still tattooes can get infected and you can be allergic to the inks.
In my youth, I considered two body mods, and waited a year for each one: I'm SO glad I didn't do either!

You can wear a beautiful little chain on your ankle, which is what some of my men do; it can easily be removed, or not, depending on the man and his employment. You might want to consider that first.

adman -> RE: Getting a Tattoo (10/9/2011 11:14:24 PM)

I have to say it is interesting to see the prudish attitude . I have a tattoo in an easily hidden place ... most of the women I know in my professional life and personal life have tattoos (I am a scientist/engineer) . It doesn't matter to them if men find them sexy or not, the people i know who have tattoos got them for themselves, they don't regret them because they gave considerable thought, and each tattoo means something to them .

Don't get one on a whim but really if you think you want one and can walk past a tattoo parlor a few times come back to it and still want it get it - you might regret it, sure, but then would we do anything in life if the priviso of doing something is we might regret it . i doubt most of us would get out of bed in a morning if we never did anything without the possibility of regret .

Also in terms of career . Would you work for a boss or aspire to work for a boss or a company that only promoted people with blond hair or green eyes ? People saying they would not hire someone on the basis of a tattoo obviously don't consider ability or talent and hire people off their first impression, and do not work off merit, i would not want to work for a company that values looks over abilities .

I think as time progresses attitudes to tattoos will change ...i mean one thing that gets me is you are talking about a tattoo on your ankle . i have to say when i meet somebody i cannot say the first thing i do is check out their ankles, it can be relatively easily to hide or draw attention away from, also those saying about sagging skin .. on your ankles? really? And also if you look after it then there is no reason why modern inks will fade - one thing that does kill you and the tattoo is the sun and or tanning salons (stupid stupid stupid) so if you want a tattoo and a tan then take extra care of your tattoo .

Talking about killing - avoid UV inks - at least for now - a good number of studios will not touch them for a reason . UV inks are based on potentially carcinogenic chemicals - (they have to be to give that UV shift) and while they may pop in some conditions - they could cause problems in the future .

My advice would be - think about it - think about it some more and while you are thinking do some research, find a good tattooist...for gods sake, go in have a look at the studio is it clean looking, do they have relevent H&S certificates on the walls, do they look professional . Most tattoo artists will have no problem talking things out with you without expecting you to get inked up . Have a look through their art books and look for photographs of previous work, look especially for cover up work they might carry out because if they are good artists they will tend to do a lot of that for other scratchers . Don't be overly influence by price, the most expensive is not necessarily the best and cheep doesn't mean cheerful . Go for someones work you like , most will be able to draw up a design on your requirements but be sure about it .

One final thing is you have to be warned that your ankle is quite bony and the skin is not that thick and so it will hurt no matter what anyone tells you .

Good luck and i hope you enjoy your life, you only get one ride on this pony so make the most of it - with or without tattoos ..
