farglebargle -> "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 8:28:01 AM)

In another venue, we were discussing the move to ipads over traditional textbooks, and someone suggested that if we were doing this, why weren't we giving them AMERICAN MADE tablets, and then went on to point out that if there were no AMERICAN MADE tablets, than that itself was the issue.

I concurred.

And isn't that the right place for tariffs? Shouldn't an offshore iPad be taxed so that Americans could earn a living making a competing product?

Moonhead -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 8:31:03 AM)

Yes, they should.
Won't happen though.

farglebargle -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 8:32:54 AM)

Well then people can't very well piss and moan about "Job Creation", can they?

willbeurdaddy -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 10:31:35 AM)

no. Tariffs only make the same product more expensive.

EternalHoH -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 11:43:48 AM)

Yea, like the world wont turn without cheap shit on the shelves.

farglebargle -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 11:48:16 AM)

Exactly.

If you made a Chinese iPad as expensive as one built by AMERICANS, then you CREATE JOBS.

You create AMERICAN JOBS. Making iPads.

Don't you want Americans to be employed making iPads?

Moonhead -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 12:14:22 PM)

Apparently not. He's more interested in safeguarding Apple's profit margins.

jlf1961 -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 12:32:13 PM)

Considering that rich republican supporters are sending jobs overseas, chinese ipads will remain cheap.

Of course, if Republicans hate americans so much and ship jobs overseas, maybe the Republicans will ship themselves overseas.

Moonhead -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 12:33:29 PM)

That's probably be too much to hope for, sadly.

Termyn8or -> RE: "Made in USA" is the solution to our economic crisis... (9/18/2011 3:54:35 PM)

I do advocate outsourcing - of the fucking government. I really don't think anyone could do worse.

T^T

WTF?  The proposal to add tariffs to offshored goods has been around for decades.  Never has been implemented, likely never will be.  Good luck finding domestically produced electronics today.  Or shoes, or textiles....

In order for import tariffs to work, you'd need to repeal NAFTA as well.  You might as well rail against the Vietnam war while you're at it.

You cant grow an economy by making people pay more for the same goods. Its just another version of the broken window fallacy. You employ Americans making iPads and take jobs away elsewhere.

Sure you can. See, if AMERICANS make the iPads, then AMERICANS GET PAID. Then they take that paycheck, and buy stuff. Buying Stuff is what drives our economy, and by stimulating DEMAND for goods and services, the economy will grow.

Now, by promoting, as you suggest, the importation of artificially cheap goods, you shrink the economy.

So, what side are you on? The American Worker or the Chinese Manufacturer?

Too pat an answer.  Let's follow what would happen.

1. If the prices were identical, then some people would pay for the Chinese iPad just the same.  This would result in money going to the government via taxes that is currently going to China.
2. At the higher prices, there would be fewer iPads sold.  Lower standard of living.
3. Smuggling.
4. Cost control in US industries would be much less of a focus.  I'm not sure if that would be good or not.
5. The Chinese have much better technological capability than previously.  They would be capable of creating new products to compete with the iPad.  Would those new products be taxed to make them comparatively priced with American-made competition even prior to the American-made products being manufactured?  I don't see how that could be done, but I don't think we could compete otherwise.

No you moron. Those hired to make iPads take their paycheck and buy stuff. But the people who BUY iPads have less money to spend on OTHER stuff, because they had to pay inflated prices for the iPad. That takes jobs away from those making the OTHER stuff. Since the iPad employees manufacture far more than they are paid the net is an overall reduction in the country's buying power.

Read the broken window fallacy and educate yourself for a change.

The people buying iPads are already paying inflated prices. It's a luxury good. No-one is choosing an ipad over their mortgage.

you have to keep it simple for FB. I dont disagree with any of the above, but the far greater effect is in my post between yours and this one.

Taken directly from the KD school of strawmen.

Hey, you're the one who created the mythical consumer who wouldn't buy an iPad if it was made by an American being paid a wage which didn't require you to provide them food stamps.

Lying or reading comprehension problems? I never said any such thing. In fact my example was exactly the opposite.
