I agree that they are just a gimmick either to sell more soap or to make very lazy people happy. Use soap people...in a bar if you are at home. It works just as well and helps kids get their hands cleaner. To add another to whatever list you are making of odd gimmick products....I would add that little beat that sanitizes toothbrushs. Those things are supposed to make "moms" job easier, but most moms know to throw away a toothbrush after three months anyway.

My pet says they had these when he was a kid, but he is about ten years younger than I am.

*oh* and britta water filters. Ok I know they have a use but I grew up drinking well water and the moment I had a child my mother ran out and bought a bunch of water filters. She explained to me that well water is bad for a child....and I thanked her for not loving me very much when I was a child

So did we! Those things were great.

Oh GOD yes, I hate those things. When my eldest was an infant, we used cloth diapers, and when she was potty trained and no longer in diapers we suddenly had hundred or so unifrom sized thick, strong, soft and Oh-So-Absorbant towels available.

We used them for years!

At work we are required to wear gloves. However, we're told never to change the gloves because it costs too much money. As a result, food handling is much less sanitary than if we had not worn gloves and simply washed our hands regularly.

I bought one of those Lysol thingers for two reasons:

1.  It was free after a coupon

and

2.  It was easier for my preschooler to maneuver by the sink.  We have a slate floor and she has to use a step-stool to reach the sink, because the floor is uneven (due to the nature of the slate) if she shifts her weight too much the stool will tip over, dumping her into a heap on the aforementioned (slate) floor.

She loves it.  Husband loves it.
I, however, always fuck it up.  For some reason I can't ever get it right and end up making a soap mess on the bathroom counter.
Because of that we have two soaps in the bathroom.  Their soap and my soap

I had this argument with a friend recently - their view was that it was good for hospitals and workplaces, as even repeatedly cleaning the same surface leaves an ideal place for resistent bacteria to breed.

I can see their point, though if you're using a "germy soap pump" regularly, it won't last long till it's going to be replaced anyway

I like them, just because I like the "no-touch" aspect. But I've managed to kill two of them so far by knocking them into a sink full of water. That's one thing you don't have to worry about with a plain old pump type soap dispenser.

I like the no touch soap dispensers in public bathrooms, but I hate the air dryers. I much prefer paper towels to dry just because I then use that towel to open the door to leave the bathroom.

Or...if you're short like me and you lean into the counter on your tippy toes to peek at the mirror and get a wet waterline across your waist. Good for drying the edge too.

Air dryers suck. Paper towels, on the other hand, are great for rubbing semen in her face post hummer :-)

That and all of the aerosols in the air that are drawn into the uptake valve of hand dyers and deposited on your hands. Kinda defeats the purpose of washing. ;)

My favourite part of the public restroom experience is that you come to that awkward moment where after washing your hands you have to touch that door handle again.

I traveled this weekend, so I was in a couple of airports. I noticed that they had those hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere, and every once in a while there was an intercom announcement about using them to prevent the spread of disease. It seems more and more public places have those things. My opinion is that overusing hand sanitizer just breeds super germs, but I was wondering about the increased use of those dispensers. Obviously not something that was very common even 5 years ago. Is there supposed to be a super scary strain of flu this winter, or something?
