It was formerly known as al-Ramleh with variations of the spelling. It was founded at the start of the 8th Century and became important as a trading route with Cairo. Just do a google search of "Ramla capitol". Here are a few examples:

Wiki is of course not 100% reliable but it is usually OK for basic facts. WIth contentious political issues it is dubious. Contrary to what you claim wiki has been shown to be more sympathetic to Palestinianism because it is a popular movement so the number of users inputing data from that stance are greater.
