Congress Girds for a Government Shutdown Sequel

There's no threat of government shutdown," House Speaker John Boehner said last night, a sentiment that doesn't seem so comforting Friday morning. The Republican-controlled House did pass a disaster relief bill by a thin 219-203 margin last night that included $3.65 million dollars to help refill the coffers of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, The Los Angeles Times wrote. But it also included what the paper colorfully described as a "poison pill" of provisions that Harry Reid and Senate Democrats would never go for. Things like, as the paper reports, taking "$1.5 billion from a green vehicle program that Democrats champion as a job creator" and "$100 million from an Energy Department account" that loaned money to the bankrupt solar-company Solyndra to send a message.

Meanwhile.....

"Republicans want to offset the cost of restocking FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund by cutting spending elsewhere in the federal budget."

Again, forcing their extreme agenda on us by holding a gun to our heads.

This time,folk`s disaster relief.

This,is what republicans call leadership? What a bunch of clowns.

Perhaps you forget that the Senate is Dem controlled.

Washington lurched toward another potential government shutdown crisis Friday, as the House approved by a 219-203 vote a GOP-authored short-term funding measure designed to keep the government running through Nov. 18 and Democrats in the Senate immediately vowed to reject the bill.

I have no idea what you are talking about. (complete innocent look)

What color are the spelling police? (There has GOT to be a way to make a pun of this.)

As opposed to leaving the stupid and extremists assholes in office who got us where we are in the first place. Tellin ya mike, if the US doesn't learn some fiscal responsibility soon, we're going to be face first into a wall with no options. Look around the world. We're not the only ones, and those being forced to fix it are not happy.

And just who would you be suggesting are those "stupid and extremist assholes"?
In addition let me ask you this question...the Republican tea party and Grover pledgeists hold to the line that raising taxes in a recession is a no no.....how is it that it is a good idea to slash gov.spending during that same recession?

Where was all this fiscal concern 4, 6 or 8 years ago?  They never cared about fiscal concern when they raised the debt all those times, they never passed a balanced budget act when they where in control,  never in the history of our country held back aid to the American people for disaster relief...but NOW they are concerned about being fiscal???

No Mitch said it best when he repeated several times, his only goal in his position it to make sure Obama does not get re-elected, the hell with what the country needs.  He would rather the USA fall to pieces and its people suffer just so he can get back in power

They are showing their true colors

Find me a place in the world today suffering from a debt crisis that is happy, that is doing well, that is preserving their way of life, that isn't under pressure to raise taxes, cut benefits in order to get loans to keep from defaulting.

Look back, look at the present or look forward. Choice is yours.

So where's the money going to come from? Is your problem that they will hold the line or that they were elected to hold the line on taxes? Just curious. If voters sent a wave crashing down on washington to say, we've had enough. Is your problem with the people they elected or with them?

You want serious work. Well, what the fuck is serious? Government money is not going to turn this problem around. It's the money in your pocket, mine, and everyone else's. We have to spend. We have to have enough confidence to spend.

Yeah, the 40% increase in debt since Obama took office doesnt change things a bit.

Perhaps you don't realize that November 18th is less then two months away.

What good does a short-term funding plan do?

The Republicans are just playing games, trying to make it seem like they are compromising when they are purposely trying to stretch to this out and turn in into an imaginary crisis to damage the Democrats.

Uhh,,,,,,,you do realize it was Bush and a Republican Congress that started this mess?

And if we really want to trace it back it started with Reagan and his trickle-down nonsense that Dubya adopted.
