But, all these authors who have reached fame through their novels over all the many thousands of novels available, why is it these particular novels become so well read and liked, surely it is not just the prose. Myself, it took me several attempts to read Dune, as I found the prose difficult for me to understand, similarly Tolkein's ''Lord of The Rings'', but the way I read is very slowly, with much going back over what I have just read to get the scene right in my mind's eye. I analyse as I read.

That's a whole other question.
As far as Dune (and Tolkein for that matter) goes, it's probably down to an internally consistent created world that the novel (and its sequels) provides a guided tour of for its reader. This is the appeal of all sf and fantasy for a lot of readers, after all, but plenty of it features worlds that aren't as well thought out as Tolkein or Herbert's.
The consistency isn't the whole of the story though, obviously, or Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe would have Tolkein level followings rather than being fairly minor cult writers. Whatever else is behind Dune's lasting success, I doubt it's the political metaphor, though.

Yeah, the cult thing, a pal who is heavily into sf told me Dune was cult, whereas at the time, although only I liked the movie amongst my group of friends and even went back for more but even then, I understood Dune to be fringe. My sf pal was only age 4 when the movie came out and so now raves about how wonderful it is even though he had not seen it, so I loaned him my directors cut to educate himself, which after a year he has still not watched in it's entirety, but I am wondering this cult status, what is it, is it just a band wagon for those that were not there at the time to feel involved.

The best definition of a cult comes from no less a man than Adam Ant:
"Cult is just another word for loser."
