Er, the math on that is funny, in theory once you get going faster then light, a state of zero  'thrust' results in infinite speed, and you are everywhere in the universe at the same time, when you are at rest, i.e. tachyons. In short you then need infinite energy to slow down to the sped of light.

It is that infinite amount of energy you need to get over the light speed hump that is the problem.

Termyn8or -> RE: Breaking the ultimate speed limit (9/28/2011 7:56:14 PM)

"I was originally taught that Einstein never said nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, just that anything with mass could not be accelerated to beyond the speed of light."

You know why that is ? It's because if mass is accelerated to C, it is no longer mass. And remember everything is relative. If you think outside the box, the ramifications of this are staggering in that then there are an infinite number of universes. Each is in it's own velocity space. This would also make it almost necessary that the universe(s) itself is completely boundless, and that it always has been and always will be.

And that level of complexity would pretty much qualify it as a life form, and if we accept that, then we must be cells of that life form.

Do we accept that ? Your choice, I am undecided but it does tend to explain alot of things. But then there's that theory that we are all a hologram, which also tends to explain a few things.

I think people are dying to find out, that is that we die, it's not just nothing I think, I think we join something. We lose our personage but gain the knowledge of,,,,, everything. What was and is, and therefore what will be. That then, and only then we are timeless.

And note that I firmly believe that time travel is and always shall be impossible for corporeal beings, and it doesn't matter who says what. Non corporeal beings on the other hand, would have no use for time travel.

If you have infinite mass when you are going at light's speed, how much do you weigh when you are going faster then light?

popeye1250 -> RE: Breaking the ultimate speed limit (9/28/2011 9:01:34 PM)

Einstein said that there was one exception to the speed of light.
It was at "the big bang,"when everything moved faster than the speed of light."

That would be an interesting thing for him to say, since he never bought into big bang theory.

while I do not see an immediate problem with hubbles work, red shift is not an absolute answer since it is possible or even probable that small particles hurled in any given direction can appear to be color shifted as well. An expanding neighborhood has nothing to do with a big bang, except to get their names in the books of crackpot theories.

Entire Galaxies, in the main, are not considered to be 'smallish' in nature relativistically, even by the most profoundly ignorant.

as usual the entire point is lost with you LOL

its bs, like time travel

then again lets talk about his bullshit of curved space and time lol

like cheating on a math exam

speed limit is directly proportional to mass.  (with certain exceptions.)

there is no speed limit

There was no point so nothing lost.

Technically the negative mass you would have at the start of this process to have might be a problem. (Maybe that is what dark matter is.)

But since a photon moves at the speed of light, it must then weigh an infinite amount, no?

Like I noted, the math in this area gets real funny.

And some of the better areas of quantum mechanics make ones head spin.

Perhaps one could pass a law . . . .

Well, even more interesting in that he never said it, as you and I know anyhow. Not even close. Not even by some outlandishly misinterpreted statement. Not even drunk. Not even in jest.

It is not like cheating on a math exam. The examples to prove that curvature are ubitquious and irrefutable.

While I have a real problem with the way that matter anti-matter equivalence and then imbalance is shined off, it turns out that the likely explanation lies in a sine wave and we could reverse polarity and I could become a neo-con at some aeon in the future. But I hope not.

there are only 8 quadrants, the rest is bulshit.

Now the real key to the whole matter is inverse hyperbolic-log time.

mnottertail -> RE: Breaking the ultimate speed limit (9/28/2011 10:43:25 PM)

nope time is a figment.

and there are only four quadrants, never more never less always has been and always will be and you can quote me. the quad thingie means four, inconvienient as hell, but words have meanings you see.

there are 8 octants, but so what, that is like saying:

there is a place.

Perhaps. But even anti matter has a positive amount of mass.

Would this negative mass produce anti-gravity, since gravity is a function of mass?" is another good question. If so how does this infinity faster vehicle get anywhere near a normal planet?

As I noted the math gets real interesting when you look into this area.
