Of course

Just as someone can be bad with god

Jim Jones, Baker, Swaggert... just to name a few

Doesn't this raise the question of what it means to be "with god." You have listed some scammers who used god to promote their schemes. Perhaps detractors from these "elmer gantrys" would say they were never with god in the sense that they were in a state of Grace. At the very least they repudiated their godly beliefs by their actions. Doncha think?

oh for fuck's sake. god is made up, he isn't fucking real, so nobody is with god or without god. god is just a fucking delusion, a fantasy used by people who are too fucking cowardly or weak to accept responsibility for themselves.

you want to be good, then do it, what the fuck do you need some collection of ancient fairy tails to tell you how, you should be able to figure that out for yourself. you have a brain, use it.

Well, that is what I think too.  And yet, there are still those who think they need religion, and insist that it is a force for good.  I don't see it that way.  You are either an ethical, moral person, or you aren't.  In fact, I tend to believe that religion (which I am defining as a belief in a higher power) does more harm than good.

Okay. Make your case, then.

But make it as defined -- belief in a higher power -- without reference to the writings or doctrines of any particular religion.

I believe I will pass.  I am not seeking converts, after all.

If you are truly interested, and not just bored and passing the time, read God is Not Great, by Christopher Hitchens.

Nah, that's okay...

I'll just write you off as one of those types who repeat shit they can't defend and tell me to read the Bible if I have any questions.

I came late to the party, of course there is good with out god...how many wars are fought "in the name of god"?
How many preachers rip off old people "in the name of god"?

As far as I'm concerned; superstitious myth created to control the masses.

I feel I'm a much better and calmer person once I excluded belief in a higher power from my life.

Yes, you can be good without god, as an atheist I manage it.

As far as controlling the masses goes, it doesn't seem to work very well.

But I'm certainly glad you're calmer now.

Actually metaphor and parabels is how many lessons concerning ethics and morality have been learned, whether it is religion or a good fiction novel.

Although some conflicts were seemingly fought on religious grounds (or at least primarily so) its still worth remembering that many wars supposedly fought in the name of God were really fought in the name of Greed. Greed is a constant in human behaviour whether pagan/monotheistic/atheistic...
