I didn't want to hijack that thread in general bdsm, especially since this subject is not bdsm. Oh sure, some of my prior jobs cued into my inner masochist, but technically they were not sadists.
..... well maybe with the exception of the best buy corporation

Anyway, the topic over there veered off to "lesser work". I have done my share of crap jobs in my life. I started working at age 14 (I said I was 16), working doing imput for a dental conglomerate. My hand writing was good and my wrists did not suffer from carpal, the pay was 5.00 an hour, GOOD pay for back then. I liked that job even though it was braindead. But I have done other weird things. I drove a delivery van and moved furniture. I sold tv's stereos, and service contracts. I was a bartender. I washed cars. I drove and delivered cars from state to state. I was a belly dancer, a singer, and an artist. I worked retail and customer service. I never flipped burgers but I have cleaned grills.

What ever you are doing now, what other jobs did you do before you got here?

I started working when I was 14 through the local county summer youth work program. I did that two summers. I flipped burgers My senior year of high school. I had a couple call center positions. And a bus driver.

Lesser work...I've had a few of those types of jobs. The most common job I have in that category is waitress, and it's stood me well quite a few times. Freaking long hours and so tough on you physically, but you can make some money. Counter help, hotel maid service, barista, short order cook aka burger flipper, housecleaner, janitor - my high school had a program for needy kids where they would take 2 kids a summer and give them a job cleaning the school. Deli worker, grocery store checker, day care provider, bartender, ebay store owner, flier hander-outer.

On the more educated front I've been a teacher, a medical office receptionist/caregiver, a librarian, a store manager, a graphic designer, and business owner/operator (restaurant). The most important job I've had is being a Mom. The weirdest job I've had is being a 'lingerie model'. We had to dress in lingerie and go around a restaurant asking people to buy tickets to win the lingerie we were modeling. I started working when I was 13. Nothing is 'beneath' me really if I need a job. It drives me crazy when people seem to think they are too good for certain types of work. If you need a job go get one, don't be picky. Anyone who is busy actively earning a paycheck rather than sitting on their ass, regardless of the type of work they are doing, is doing well.

My kids don't get a dime from me outside of college tuition and basic living expenses and never have. They do however get the chance at a job in one of our restaurants and they have to work (well!) to keep it. My middle son is currently a senior at Pitt and has two jobs. My youngest is a junior at Pitt and his job there is to get up at 3 AM and go unload groceries in the middle of the street and then stock a grocery store. When the two of them come home to visit they don't get any money from the parental pocketbook, but they do get to work serving tables in order to earn it. My oldest got his first job at 12 delivering papers. He got up every single Sunday morning for 4 years to deliver papers as well as doing the afternoon daily route. His work ethic to this day would bring most people to their knees. I'm very proud of my kids. I say this because when people find out we have money in the family (now) they assume that the kids were given things over and above the basics, and they are not - it's stood them well.

What ever you are doing now, what other jobs did you do before you got here?

Agreed.

However, the OP has the term in parans, and therefore I believe she realizes this.

I started sweeping the parking lot of the local "Snack Shack" when I was 14, after closing (10:30 at night).

I've been a dish-washer, a table busser, a gas jockey, a service station attendant, a ditch-digger and a few other assorted jobs that I will probably remember later.

I was always proud of what I did, and tried to be the best at it.

I'll shovel shit if it pays well enough.

Here's something about lesser work, there is a lack of migrant workers down south and it's harvest time. Food is rotting in the fields. The lack of that lesser work getting done is going to screw us all at the grocery store now.

You want MY opinion of lesser work ? Congressman, bank president, CEO of a drug company........ shoot them and noone will notice.

Ive mowed, worked in a dive shop, worked in a ware house, built bicycle wheels, dove for golf balls, worked on a fish farm, worked as a construction laborer.........became a foreman in 6 months. did necropsies on marine mammals (in the summer in FL). Cleaned boat hulls. Salvage diver. Planted sea grass. Caught aligators and American crocs (nasty FAST fuckers). Caught snakes. Cleaned up oil spills. Tourguide in the everglades. ( Big Cypress actually swamptracks are FUN till they break down and you have to walk out a night for spare parts). A few other things.

gawd, I've done so many jobs! Some of the lesser pay ones were babysitting for nutcases, housecleaning for truck drivers, prepping patients in an MRI dept, pulling parts in an auto parts warehouse, telemarketer, reading tarot cards at parties and lots and lots of temp secretarial jobs at all kinds of companies.

I learned something from each one though. Some I liked, others I detested but from those experiences I was able to figure out what I wanted out of life. I would do it again and I even recommend it to my daughter. I remind her that she's young and she should experience other jobs so that she can learn from each one. She doesn't have to stay where she's at, coming home every night covered in chicken flour from frying it all day <cringe...she's got more guts than me lol>.

I started babysitting when I was 14, for a dollar an hour. I've delivered newspapers in times of financial pain (in fact I've been thinking of doing that again for the extra money). I've been a waitress, a prep cook, and a hamburger flipper. I've stocked shelves in a five-and-dime (where did those go, anyway?), sold both Kirby and Rainbow cleaning systems; did some telemarketing and licked envelops for my college alumni office. However, "lesser work" is a point of view. Some people love those types of jobs. My grandmother was a waitress for years and loved it. And sometimes my job makes me feel like little more than a glorified babysitter--and I make nearly as little as most teenage sitters make these days. And many people with higher paying jobs would consider social work to be "lesser work" but I couldn't see myself doing anything else.

I think my daughter would agree with it being an occupational hazard, or at least her boyfriend would. haha

I really don't know how she does it with being around grease all day. I give mucho power to her though for sticking it out.

I don't think social work could be considered "lesser" simply because it takes some amount of work to get there.
I enjoyed my social service jobs, low paying but really rewarding until I burned out.

Oh come on, there may be two or three more. Once you get to know me you find that I am only 90% asshole. There's always that 10%, and I fucking flaunt it !

But anyway, this whole thread is probably going in an unexpected direction. That respect for one does not mean disrespect for another. Like respect, disrespect is earned, and that's why there are alot of celebrities (most in fact) that I want nothing to do with. Others may swoon but I have no use for them. Politicians ? Hell I would rather be around James Trafficant than about any President that sat during my lifetime, in fact I can't think of any Preident I would actually like to meet. At least not after his term. I would go for an audience with one currently in power to bend his ear and try to talk some fucking common sense into him, but he would get about as much respect as my boss. That mean they get it from the hip just like anyone else.

In other words my philosophy on life is "fukum".

ETA : I would watch kids for a buck an hour - each that is. No babies though, they gotta be out of diapers. I couldn't afford to take it as a permanent job, but it would be OK for a while.

I delivered papers as a teen, worked in a library every saturday putting books back onto shelves for 10 hours straight (with 30 minutes for lunch), volunteered in a retirement home, made wedding dresses and christening robes (to pay my way through college).

Once I graduated I was an electronics design engineer for many years, then journalist, PR and marketing, market analyst for a City firm and now teacher.

I've learned a lot from every job I've ever had, even the most menial. It has also given me a strong work ethic, which has stood me in good stead over the years.

My first job was as a paper carrier. My best friend at the time got a route around the same time I did, but she got tired of it and I scooped her route. More bucks for me!! The people were great around the holidays - I would get some nice tips (usually $$$) from the people on my delivery route. It sucked during the winter though. I remember one time it was below -40 and my Dad drove me the entire route. I'd deliver to a couple of houses and then dive back into the car to warm up. Even so, I started getting the beginnings of frost-bite on my cheeks and my lips got so dry the bottom one developed a crack down the middle of it and took forever to heal. It was nasty. Ahhh memories. :)

Edited to add:

I was 12 at the time. I had to give up my big empire (it really was a huge route) when my Dad got transferred. :(

Restaurant dishwasher, waitress, radio DJ, passing out samples of soda pop in the grocery store (like people didn't know what Coke tasted like), baking pies and making the salad bar for my parents' restaurant, did some very menial "temp" office jobs for Kelly Girls.

I've shoveled shit too, I worked as a stable hand one summer after I got out of the Navy - not much call for repairing radars or arming nuclear weapons in the civilian world - I'm trained in avionics, but the Airline industry has suffered considerably from deregulation.

I already told about working in a chain of adult video/magazine/bookstores, with private video booths, where I had to mop up the cum off the floor every night at closing - that actually was a pretty good job, the worst part was the crackheads who would shit in the ashtrays, apparently that shit loosens your bowels, but I met a lot of kinky women in that job, and as it's basically a sales job, you had to know your merchandise, so in a sense, watching porn was part of my job - as was asking women to review toys and videos, etc.

As sales training, you really had to be able to read a customer quickly, with some you had to be discrete, speak in euphemisms and talk gently around the subject, others preferred it straight up and graphic (try shoving this up you're ass, it's a real eye opener!) - it was a fascinating experience overall - there was a small, about 30 person capacity theater at one location, talk about Sodom and Gomorrah, that was one wild scene - I think they ended up zoning a lot of that stuff out, so it's all probably moved to one of the crack motels.
