a linear value
You invented this line. I spoke about a binary partition, not a line. A is true or false, for every assertion. If you want to disprove me, I invite you to try. But if you use a non-ambiguous sentence (which can be true with one meaning and untrue with other, but that makes it two different asserts) it will be true or false. This is my bet. I invite you to disprove me.

Ah thanks for clarifying, not so much an invention on my part as a misinterpretation, whenever i see a value followed by a negative equivalent, my first thought is a spectrum between the two values.

With regards to your challenge, my first thought was "she is beautiful", and a further thought reminded me of a riddle:

quote:

Inquisitor[/I]Speak the truth and you shall be killed swiftly, lie and you shall be hanged. What say you?

PrisonerI will be hanged.

if you take the inquisitor's word as an absolute truth, then the answer cannot be absolutely true or absolutely false, thereby a paradoxical statement, no?

And my third and final thought on your challenge for the evening, "Infinity", a value with no conceivable absolute

Mr. Anaxagoras, the conversation has escalated too much. I prefer to cut it here, sorry, your tone is unpleasant and disrespectful now. See you.

Are you kidding me?? Hello! Have you seen some of the threads in this forum? He's been entirely patient with you. You're just getting into a snit because he can prove his words and you just come back with "I don't agree" and no coherent thoughts to back up your claims.

Thanks D, I tried to be patient and just make a few points that engaged with the things he was saying but it seems others on here were right to judge. If he sticks around I hope he can learn to talk to others as genuine equals but I doubt it.

For everybody, things I consider important on that conversation with Anaxagoras:

Let me elucidate a very fine point for you: no one gives a flip what you think is important in your conversation with Anaxagoras!! And the truth of it is, I highly doubt there is a single person who has even read every single word in the exchanges between the two of you, except possibly Anaxagoras!

This is for you.

Well I hope a few other people read it but you are probably right! Put like that its kind of a waste. lol

DeviantlyD -> RE: A bit on epistemology. (10/2/2011 4:38:40 PM)

I just think that he is putting far too much importance on his words. Seriously. Does he honestly think that all who have posted here sit in rapt anticipation of what his next words will be? Pffft. He needs a reality check.

MadAxeman -> RE: A bit on epistemology. (10/2/2011 5:50:04 PM)

Some threads make me wish I could forget how to read.

DesFIP -> RE: A bit on epistemology. (10/2/2011 6:41:26 PM)

I'm just focusing on the waffle. Wonder if I can talk The Man into a 45 minute drive to the IHOP tomorrow? No, it just ain't happening.

Okay. . . I had to try it. You can be put on hide. Or, I am a CM super-user. Or, I suppose that it could be an extra feature based on number of posts.

Aylee: Check VAA's subsequent posts in this thread for your answer.

Even if it were true (and it is not), this sentence is plain wrong. Every complex mathematical demostration is full of self-made definitions, and they are very, very serious.
"Let A be the set of..." is a definition.

Maybe, compared to other threads, but I am learning that in this forum the best is to "hide" many people. As I am going to do with you, as I think that speaking with you is really worthless for us both.

I did not understood that. There are many infinities, the part of mathematics which handle it are call "transfinite mathematics". I know a bit about it.
Anyway, as I told you... once you eliminate ambigüity, any assert is just true or false. It is not about a contradition, or a paradox, or anything like that (your paradox being a beautiful example which I knew already - but beautiful). It is just  - eliminate ambiguity. And that's it.
Look - all maths, and all science, are based on this. If the "excluded third" principle was ever refuted, the whole science would have to be re-made. It is simply so, I am sorry if this sounds again arrogant.
Best regards, and have a nice day.

I thought this said "A bit on episiotomies" and I was wondering why it was here instead of the health section. I also wondered if the OP was a gyne since he started such a thread.

I turns out, he didn't, and probably isn't one. I haven't read the thread because it looks mind-numbing, and I have to do something more interesting now... like stub my toe repeatedly on the computer chair. [8|]

SpanishMatMaster -> RE: A bit on epistemology. (10/2/2011 10:12:58 PM)

Anaxagoras, I have overflown your last message. I have the impression that further communication with you would be useless for us both. It is a pity, but I will set you on "hide". Have a good life.

Everyone has different interests. And no, I am not gynecologist. It is a bit funny how in this thread that word was so usually mistaken by that other word. Have a nice day.

PS: I suggest you and the other people who have made the same mistake and came here by error, open a thread about episiotomies. Maybe you can share valuable knowledge.

One thing that used to irritate me when I had one or two people on hide was that if someone quoted them, I could still see what they said. How much worse would it be with people quoting ALL the people you have on hide?

It was just a thought...

Now that's a spiffing idea... [;)]

Since you are not a native English speaker, let me point out to you that the phrase "trust me" was not used in a literal sense.

LOL! Well, not very loud, but I laughed.... no, Anaxagoras, really not. Some people here think I have a "thin skin" because I "hide" so many people. It is not so. I was already in many internet forums, including some evangelical ones. I have provoked so - some... hum... problems in some of those forums, specially on one where there was a scandal when it was known how certain evangelical pastor had done. I am completely used to being attacked, insulted, etc. and I really, really do not care much. My main reason for putting somebody in "hide" is because I think that it is useless for both to continue the communication, but I wish you no evil and I really wish you a good life. From the heart.

Its odd you are still replying to me via another's post after putting me on hide. Like most I suspect, I am probably not immune to insult but if anyone here has a thin skin it is yourself by repeatedly hiding people. If you were really interested in discussion you would not have pulled the stunts you did repeatedly, and been quite insulting/patronising in the process, which led to me to fire back a few arguably stronger insulting responses of my own... but if it doesn't upset you then I'm glad and you have little reason to complain! [:)]

quote:

Gosh, there are bad people around. REALLY bad people around, and pretty powerful. Compared to that we are here children in the playground. No reason to make a drama of anything happening here.

A drama? You objected to me being insulting when you had been so yourself so yeah a bit of hostility but I don't think I have been especially so or it would've likely been deleted.
