And I think it is unreasonable of whites try sweep it all under the carpet by calling for us, the aggrieved party, to "let the past go". It's easy for you to say, sitting in your comfortable home on Guale land. Give us back our nations, our land, our freedom, and our sovereignty, then we'll consider letting bygones be bygones.

Oh crap. So what you're saying is that it was, indeed, a straightforward purchase? Dammit. I'm reminded of a discussion I had a while back, in which an American was trying to explain to me that it was easier for him to do business in India than me, because of our colonial record in India. He went on and on, till I eventually had to say "At least we didn't kill all our indians" I really do have sympathy with indigenous peoples in places like North America and Australia (where forced adoptions were still taking place in the 70's) At the end of the day, if you want to redraw the borders based on some prior date, you have to agree on the date - and then everyone has to sign up to it. As has been said, pretty much every scrap of land has been conquered at some time, and if I had to choose - I'd pick AD30 - when the Romans were in charge of Britain - mainly because I they make great coffee(*although I'm not entirely sure we had coffee in AD30... in which case...)

I am NOT saying let the p[ast go, Emily. I DO think that some equitable solution should be accorded.. as it should have been way back when. Suggesting that I should move out of my home (that I have lived in for less than 6 months) because of somethng my forebears had nothing to do with smacks of sour grapes, to me). Look, I'm all for reparations.. but realistically, in this day and age, I think it is absurd to expect that anyone who isnt "native american" (and really, if we go back far enough.. arent THE NATIVE AMERICANS actually folks from Africa?) to de-camp. Lets find an equitable solution...

I believe there was some form of purchase in Massachusetts as well. There have been many others that were more along the lines of a protection racket than a purchase, there was almost always some form of compensation offered, but negotiating under the guns of the stronger side isn't what would be called a fair arrangement.

That's why I didn't mention the others. Transylvania was a small group of settlers (few hundred tops) that were looking at either "make a deal with these folks, run like hell or be annihilated".

And it's obvious from your responses and attitudes that you don't either. Your argument is pretty much "We won so shut up". Well you didn't win, we're still here, and we don't want to be part of your country, we want ours back. Anyway, I have to go do dishes and make supper for the drunks, thanks for letting me air my grievances, even if you all gave the standard answers, I feel better for having done so.

You're young and have a full life ahead of you. You owe it to your people to get out there and get an education and become a force for good. Your people suffer a lot of ills. Some of those are self inflicted. You can either wallow in the injustice or work with the system to help right those ills and bring your people out of their stupor and make them competitive.

My doctor at the V.A. is from India and not much darker than me. She has "caucasion" features. But none of that matters, she's a very good doctor and that's all I care about. Before her I had a black doctor who was an internist and board certified in rheumatology and was in the Army and jumped with the 82 nd Airbourne. My other doctor is very dark complected and Jewish. He doesn't miss a thing, a very good diagnostician. ( an Internist) I wouldn't care if they were fuckin purple! I've learned to be nice to everyone because you don't know their background or what they've been through. My family (both sides) came from Ireland in the early 1900's (my paternal grandparents 4 months after the Titanic sunk) well after the Civil War, slavery etc and it just never meant anything to them. My great grandfather and his friends had a run in with the KKK in Massachusetts as they didn't like the Irish or catholics! They beat up a doctor who patched up one of the clansmen that they'd shot until he gave them the names of the other clansmen and they systematically went after them and beat the hell out of them. So, skin color didn't mean too much to them. They were probably lighter skin colored than the clansmen! (Irish milk bottle white) And as for "boy" that's a term of endearment in Ireland. If you've known someone for a long time it would be, "Hey Boy! How ya doin?"

But here's a flash: It's not your country anymore, it belongs to all of us now, and if it had been your country back in the 40's none of you would be left alive today, for which you don't have to thank us - because you helped us defend it - but I don't mind thanking you for that...
