For some people a collar means sweet fuck all, for others it has genuine, real, and deep significance, while for others it's simply a convenient label, and for others it's used to mark a change in the dynamic. So at one end of the spectrum it really is analogous to a wedding ring, while at the other end it's a symbol that carries no meaning (although, it the word "symbol" is used then by definition it has to mean something). Personally, in the context of my relationships, it has relatively little meaning. But that doesn't mean that I respect people for whom it has importance any less. I've only ever been to one collaring ceremony, and it was a beautiful, profound thing to be a part of. So the key is to decide what it means to you and your partner.
