I think the Irish Celts were probably a mixture of the Brythonic Celts and the Picts, along with existing tribes stemming back to the Bronze age in Ireland. The Pictish language is thought to have a been a seperate branch of the Brythonic language spoken by those south of the river Forth. Certainly Irish culture streches back before the Celts, since more bronze age hoards of gold were found in Ireland than the whole of Europe, as far as I know.
