I'm starting the Master Cleanse tomorrow. I need to drop a few pounds (doctor's orders) and I have always liked how I feel doing this fast.
I'll also be incorporating a good solid walking workout too.
I've done it about four times in the past. Usually for about two weeks each time. I did a month once.
Anyone else ever done it? Did you like it or not?

how about just living a fairly healthy lifestyle on a day to day basis, then you won't have to go to extremes like this which won't do you any good in the long run. The only way to be healthy in the long run is to sort out a diet and exercise plan that you can stick to in the long run

I do lead a very healthy lifestyle. I do the cleanse as a cleanse, not for weight loss.
The weight loss is just an added benefit.

Since your doctor ordered you to drop a few pounds (which incidentally, I've seen your photo on here, he's nuts), does he know this is the method you plan on doing it with? It really doesn't sound like a very healthy way to lose weight. Shit, the cabbage soup diet seems more balanced than this MasterCleanse.

Cabbage Soup Diet

The fruits and vegetables do a much better job of meeting nutrional and dietary needs than this.

I've gained almost 10 pounds in the last six months. He wants my weight around 115 based on my family history of heart disease and my blood pressure (high) and cholesterol levels (also high).
He's absolutely correct. it's a good weight for me.
I've done this cleanse before and I find it easy and very efficient for me and my body.
i feel great doing it and even better for months afterwards.
I eat very healthy on a daily basis. I like to do a cleanse two times a year for ....the cleansing aspects. I've been doing this now for about two years.

I see you have no profile, so I just assume you are 43. This is a turning point in life, look at people who are fifty years old. Some of them have gray hair or are bald, and while these are not health problems per se, they are indicative of nutrition deficiencies. Why do I bring this up ? Read on.

As you age your body does not absorb the essential minerals as well, and that condition compounds itself. It gets worse and worse, unless you take drastic action. For this purpose cleaning is absolutely contraindicated. My theory is that the sugar type substances with which our food is usually laced speeds up the metabolic rate which causes the body to excrete the minerals it needs faster than it can absorb them.

What I mean is that you have 25 feet of intestine for a reason. Things should not be going through tere at fifty MPH because some of the nutrients you need take TIME to assimilate. Your body can only pour so much acids and enzymes on this shit [literally] without beginning to digest itself. This tract is not quite as covered by that gook that is in your stomach.

Now what you do with this cleansing is to wash it all out, and this is indicated sometimes. I think it's a good idea after recovery from an illness like the flu or somethng like that, but it shold not be a regular practice. That intestine is what digests your food, not the stomach for the most part.

Now we all eat all kinds of poisons and shit, so flushing yourself lke this from time to time might be a good idea depending on your diet. But too much will kill you. And let me explain that in detail. You are not going to keel over if you do it too much. What will happen is your back, knees, organs, ears, eyes, tendons, muscles, all of that, even your skin in some cases will run dry of nutrients. That is how most people age despite that discovery about the telomeres or whatever. People die from deficiency alot quicker than that cellular degeneration happens and proof is all over the place. It is quite simply in the different ways that people die.

And this is most important and the hardest to figure out - what are YOUR nutritional requirements ? From person to person they vary much more than most people think. It is almost impossible to figure out, and at one time about a decade ago I looked into getting some kind of test to see what people might need, like a blood test. Well that was a long time ago and what I found is that such a thing will not give reliable results because when your body properly metabolises these essentials, the should not remain in the bloodstream, they are supposed to be in the tissues and cells of you pancreas, kidneys, liver, brain and so forth. The blood brings them there and is supposed to drop them off for use in the complex process of life, not just bring them to show and tell. Therefore blood tests are inconclusive.

There is alot of research going on all over the world except the US. In the US they want to get some death ray, and a life ray, something to disect the molecules in the cells and reshape them in Archer Daniels Midland's image, or Pfizer, whoever has more money that quarter. In some other countries they have a real education systen and the people are way smarter than us, so there is less bullshit "science" and actually better research. From those places I get information. I don't trust ANY US sources for any information on health mainenance via diet or anything like that. Ask why and I will tell, but not right now. Just say it has to do with money.

I suggest you forget the fresh squeezed lemon juice and substitute Mike's Hard Lemonade. Drink it liberally and you will soon forget the rest of that nonsense.

Okay silly question here but how does this cleanse effect you?  I mean for someone who hasn't done it what should they expect?

I have heard people speak about cleanses but there are so many gimmicks out there -- yadda yadda.

I would like to try one but am a diabetic so don't think i can.  So i am curious what happens when you do one, can you work with it etc?

angel

Actually Angel, don't take this to the bank but I think you should be able to it if you want. I would just make it a point to check your sugar every two hours or something.

I am back, after reading the linkage...aaaaand this is only for healthy people, I wouldn't recommmend it for a diabetic or anyone with gastrointestinal issues.

Really, the only important thing is the laxatives. The lemon/maple syrup thing is just decoration. Enzymes, of which LEMONS are not the best source, are not affected by temperature. Damn, I hate bad science, I really do. So I won't go after any of the rest of it!

I would be beyond sick on this fast, but it looks effective!

During and after the cleanse I have amazing energy, I sleep better than I ever do normally, my skin glows, the whites of my eyes are incredibly white.
My digestion is much more efficient.
I feel so much healthier overall.
I think it's an individual thing....some take to it well. Some don't.
I do.

Whew! For a minute there I thought you were referring to leaving Shore.

I once got so far as reading something on the back of something on the
back of some Cleanse product. I think it was in a Smoothie King store.
It didn't seem like something I could commit to, so I passed on it.
Since you feel rejuvenated afterwards, I don't see any risks.

But.............

I am having a hard time understanding why your doctor would advise you
to lose weight, seeing as 125 is normal, even for your height. (or lack thereof)
I would focus more on ways to lower your blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Keep in mind, even if you are eating healthy and staying active, menopause
and even some anti depressants have been rumored to elevate cholesterol levels.
There is a great benefit to lowering cholesterol by taking Metamucil on a daily basis,
so maybe your cleanse does the same thing, but how often is that safe to do?
Weight all your options! (no pun intended)

The Master Cleanse has way too much sugar for me. I did a week long (mostly) juice fast at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and was concerned that that would be too sugary too, so my doctor recommended I add some meal replacement powder. (Meta something, IIRC.)

http://www.kripalu.org/program/view/RJF-117/revitalizing_cleanse_nourishing_body_mind_and_spirit

Lots of cultures and practioners recommend periodic fasting; I'm not able to do it without support like the program at Kripalu.

Detox to the Rescue: A Post-Holiday Remedy for the Five-Pound Bloat

by Alison Shore Gaines

So you put on a pound or five over the holidays? Do you feel a like a sausage squeezed into your clothes? Most of us indulge in the delectable offerings of the season, usually laden with saturated fats, dairy, sugar, and white flour. In excess, these foods create congestion or metabolic waste that leaves us feeling sluggish, heavy, bloated, tired, achy, irritable, and/or depressed. Just as our automobile perks up after a tune-up, we can revitalize with a detox.

Whether you call it cleansing, detox, purification, or fasting, eliminating metabolic waste from the body is an ancient practice. All of the major religions include some form of fasting as a vehicle for well-being and spiritual awakening.

Fasting has a profound effect on all levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Increased vitality, mental clarity, and weight loss are typical detox results. Fasters often experience lasting relief from allergies, arthritis, fibromyalgia, headaches, and addictions to sugar, caffeine, and nicotine as well as gaining deeper insight and a sense of joy. Fasting is considered by many to be the single most effective method of healing chronic disease.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that while your body is sloughing off congestion, you may experience headaches, light-headedness, weakness, extreme fatigue, nausea, and/or emotional release. This is why a cleanse is best undertaken when you can rest and do not need to drive or work.

Just as with diet and nutrition, there are varied opinions as to the best detox protocol. Total abstinence from food and drink is the most demanding form of fasting. On a water fast, one consumes water only. The "master cleanse" consists of fresh lemonade sweetened with maple syrup and cayenne pepper. A juice fast includes a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable juices, as well as herbal teas and water. Ayurvedic and macrobiotic cleansing practices use grains and whole vegetables. Some traditions incorporate detoxifying herbal supplements.

For the detox novice, supervision is highly recommended. The safest cleansing methods include some solid food and exclude congesting foods such as dairy, fats, animal protein, sugar, and all flour products. A mono-diet detox consists of having only grains like rice or millet, or just apples or vegetable soup.

It is a lot of maple syrup, and I have seen those that use molasses instead, for the mineral content. Since all the calories come from lemon juice and the maple syrup, I wouldn't go for LESS sugar...

Two weeks of diarrhea is not something I could commit to, or even do without becoming bedridden, but short fasts are not harmful, people are sturdy.

And, I am thinking that Aileen knows what weight she FEELS best at, which is the right one for her, regardless of any chart. I know that the menopause raised my cholesterol some, but I still have way more of the "good" cholesterol so my numbers are still okay.
