I watched this show called "Brain Games" on the National Geographic Channel this evening. They did a show "that uses interactive experiments, misdirection and tricks to demonstrate how our brains create the illusion of a seamless reality through our memory, through our sensory perceptions, and in how we focus our attention."

An example is below. The top and bottom pieces appear to be different colours. But hold your finger up to cover the middle area from view, so that only the bottom of the bottom and top of the top are showing.

Are you covering the middle section, where the top meets the bottom of the squares in the image?

Yes, I did. Even put a piece of paper towel over it. Perhaps with my brain what has once been seen can't be unseen?

I don't know how you're covering up the middle section. But...you would see both are the same colour.

I tried it and I agreed with Delilya...they still looked different to me.  So I loaded the picture into my Paint Shop Pro program and checked the RGB values of both the top and bottem sections.

Top section:
R -127
G-127
B-127

Bottom section:
R-127
G-127
B-127

They are exactly the same color.  I guess our eyes can trick us in more ways than one!

Uhm...no, you aren't beating the test. You're seeing what's expected. I'm not sure what the other two are doing because they should see the same thing you do. :)

They look different to me as well. We aren't doing anything wrong, its just that not all optical "illusions" work on everybody, our brains just process the image differently. The trick in this one is that the differing backgrounds and the diminishing lines to suggest perspective gives the impression of a different lighting, so our brains interpret it as the top section is darker because the "light" is coming from below, and for some of us that implanted perception remains. So our brain overrides the visual evidence, because it "knows" they are different.

In fact, I think that, given Igor's test, it is those of us who still see them as different who are truly demonstrating "how our brains create the illusion of a seamless reality through our memory, through our sensory perceptions, and in how we focus our attention."

I didnt see the same color either, following the stated instructions. If I covered the bottom third of the top, and the top third of the lower part.. then I THINK (maybe) it might have been the same color to my eyes.. but it still seemed off by a few shades

that is how it was for me too.....the colors almost matched but the bottom was lighter.....BUT THEN....lol....instead of my fingers, i took a business card and held it up, which meant less of both the bottom and top were visible...and voila! same color!

I've tried it a few times now, and for just a moment they are the same, but they almost instantly revert to being different. I actually think that is much cooler than the original intent.

Works for me.

However, I have also noticed that if I stare at it , unfocused, for a few seconds, I can see it as one color.

Interesting.

I was seeing two shades of grey until I read Suzes first post. I went back and covered all but the gey areas. After a couple seconds I only saw one shade of grey.

To those who don't see the colours the same (because they are, as igor2003 illustrated, except for the simulated shaded area where the "bend" is), go to the web site I have linked in the OP. They will explain it better than I have. ;)

Why, it doesn't need explaining, it either works for a given person or it doesn't. Suze still sees them as different, I see them as the same when I cover the middle with my finger, Cheri is like Nancygirl and has to cover almost all of them to see the same colour, and Hanners can see them either way at will, she says it's just a matter of focusing, like Marc, but none of the rest of us can do that.
