I am glad to hear this, but I fear all they do is redeploy them to Uganda.

That will be a very good day. For now, I'm still using Facebook to stay in touch with deployed family over there and will hold off on celebrating until I see the last one posting from home.

I want to thank folks for not turning this into a repub/democrat debate.

Seriously.

Thanks.

I think the armed forces desrve the honor and respect for doing what they signed up for (without a draft).

lets keep it on this level!

How cool is that. I've got three nephews and a great nephew all deployed in different branches and they all show up with their smiling faces on my wall every day. I wasn't a real big fan of social media. But on that one plane alone, it's a cool thing...Hopy your family all come home safe and sound.
I mean that.

I am so happy for the families to be reunited. I am 100% pro military and support our troops! My fear is what job prospects will these folks come home too? Most are reserves and not "employed" by the military - unless they are active duty. Here in CA we are at 14% unemployment. Sad and sucks all at the same time.

It is true, there are not many jobs to come home to. Unemployment among vets is huge

Unemployment among everybody is huge, and it's wrong to assume that these last deployers coming home are going to automatically be leaving the military, and joining the line at the employment office. With the number of Reserve/Guard units that have been sent, plenty already have jobs they'll be happy to get back to.

Plenty of employers will give the veteran a preference, if there is any hiring at all going on.

If they're smart they'll stay in ... All my younger relatives are set because they're full time active duty... but there's an awful lot of reservists who's jobs have gone away.
I  got an email earlier this month who attached his resume and asked me to send it where I thought it might get a taker.
I wonder if those folks have an option to stay active duty.

Reservists and Guard don't.  They are considered "active" for the term of their deployment.  When they go back to their prior status, they are still "in" but they go to the 'weekend a month' bit.  Where a prior poster got the idea that those forces are what make up the "majority" of the forces in Iraq, I have no idea, but that's far from true.

Army, Air Force, etc are in service until their contract is up.  Doesn't matter if they are deployed or stateside.  How many of those will stay in (re-up) once their current contracts are finished is anyone's guess.  The "projected need" probably won't be as high, but considering that the military is over stretched as it is (read - revolving door deployments) I wouldn't think there will be a huge reduction in forces.  More like recruitment goals will go down and fewer slots going to Guard and Reserves that actually get deployed.

It is great that we're getting out of Iraq.  Since we're still in Afghanistan, there will still be deployments.  It will be a different destination and it won't be as frequent if they retain enough.  That's going to be a huge relief.

I would imagine considering the economy most would elect to reenlist.
