I do thank you for the compliment, though. I was kind of thinking of it as part comedy, part rant (I'm just old enough to realize - to my surprise - that my elders were right... but I take comfort that time will have its' way with the young and they will learn these lessons too), with just a little (I hope) bit of wisdom thrown in.

the "IF" is what a lot of older people conveniently forget about. honest self evaluation isn't a walk in the park, and i don't think most people actually do it. people of a certain age tend to arrogantly confer wisdom on themselves because "oh, i lived X number of years, which must mean something" -- yeah okay, but what did you DO in those years? =p

The question isn't so much "what did you do?" but "what did you learn from what you did?" I have indeed met many an ignorant older person (what was it Shakespeare said? "How ill white hairs become a fool"?) which is why I included that all important IF. Still, you are much more likely to meet an older wise person than a younger wise person. I forget who first said it (so all due credit to whoever credit is due) but I very much agree (granting the occasional exception) that there are only two things wrong with young people:

1. They think they know everything.

2. They don't know anything.

That is arrogance combined with ignorance. At its' best it can be amusing, at its' worst it can be tragic. Still, I don't blame young people for this. It is only natural and besides, I was one cocky, strutting, totally clueless, "knows everything," young man myself once. It took several years of smacks and splats, and a nasty case of the clap, for me to start wising up and it would be hypocritical of me not to grant the young the time necessary to acomplish their own learning. Still... it is fun tweaking them a little now and then.

Note that I said "start wising up" rather than "wise up." That is because the process never ends. I am wiser at forty-five than I was at thirty-five and twenty-five and I don't doubt that I'll be wiser at fifty-five and sixty-five than I am now. There is never a point where you become wise and get a certificate of completion. The one sure sign that you are not enlightened is the belief that you are enlightened.

ultimately i think we're in agreement.

i just have issue with the way older people tend to totally write off a younger person's opinion, ONLY out of "well when was young i was stupid. so you probably are, too."

exactly lilly, they say to them act like a grown up and when they do they tell them to shut the fuck up. and fuck it, i'm nearly 30 and i get the same fucking shit.

i'm with heather on this one, as soon as some fuck plays that age card they have lost the fucking debate right then and there. it is proof positive that there is fuck all to back up their position, so they just dismiss the opposing view since the one who holds it is "too fucking young" to understand.

Exactly my point. Though I am not kidding about the perspective. Bigger things seem smaller, and vice versa, and amazingly, some opinions change. But all that is a process, and really? It's my considered opinion that if you don't have the smarts to start with, and are not open to learning from what's happening around you, you will not experience a genius epiphany when you turn 40.

And some of the young folks assume that the old farts have been doing the sameness for decades. You get defensive, and I understand that. I did it too.

Thing is, there aint much you have talked about that you have done, that I haven't also done in my younger days, minus the lesbian and poly thing.

I whored, I fought for survival. I spent 5 years on the streets doing wtf ever it took to survive, I have hated all men, I have thought older folks were morons, I have sat with friends my own age and laughed at the old farts ignorance and how they thought they knew so much more about life than me, just because they were old.

I have also gotten off the streets, married and had a wonderful son, realized that all men aint pigs, found a job I love, and found inner peace with who I am. I have realized that old farts are not as dumb as I thought they were. I have also realized that there is no way to understand that until you are older. I understand more at nearly 50 than I did at 40, 30, on and on.

I have considered my self to be a grown up since I left home at 14. Every year that passes, I realize how much I do not know.

The past makes us what we are today, and I wouldn't trade one thing I did, right or wrong.

I know you are as irritated at me for thinking you sometimes act young and dumb as I am at you for thinking I am an old dust fart blowin ignorant fool. That means neither of us gives one rats ass what the other thinks, no sleep lost on either side.

The one thing I do know, for sure, is that assuming older folks are putting you down is natural. I also know that most of the time that is not true. Some times the correct answer is.....in 20 years you will understand what I mean.

Just as you totally discount anyone who plays the age card, I discount anyone who screams and yells and says "You are a stupid bitch because you played the age card and you are too dumb to understand my most awesome intellect."

So, looks like neither of us is special or wiser or dumber, we are just at totally different spots in the journey.

It just is what it is.

If I have ever offended you or anyone in your house, it was not my intent, and I apologize, but, I still believe, no, make that I KNOW, that, in 20 years you will see things differently than you do now. It is not an age card, it is not an insult to your intelligence, it just is.
