Yeah but let's not be blind here.  Many of the older people here do discourage young people from speaking out their views due to them discarding it.  They expect us all to be wide-eyed, impressionable, and fawning little kittens that take what is said as the gospel.  That's stupid and I classify those types to be as deserving of pity as the type who resort to being pedantic about grammar/spelling.

Anyone that has been here some length of time knows of Heather and I having mutual dislike of one another but I do think she deserves some respect for sticking to what she believes in.  The cheerleader thread you mentioned is something that as an older person (and I'm keeping up with the appearance that you all know more than younger people) you should have had the clairvoyance to see it would easily be a stalemate.  It strikes me as juvenile that you attack someone's views so vehemently for days only to not realize you achieved nothing in the end but a little catfight.

And let's face it from this angle: a lot of you older types are giving us outlooks/advice we have received from parents/guardians already.  There is some stuff that is timeless in value, but then there is opinions that are quite simply, obsolete.

xxblushesxx -> RE: I believe that... (10/20/2011 8:23:17 PM)

Older people don't deserve respect just because they're older, (although through my upbringing, I was taught and continue to give it to them) at least not in our culture. Other cultures disagree.

I did not attack others' views; I explained my own. I continued to do so as did Heather. I would say the difference is, I did not attack nor call others' names. I tried to bridge an understanding, but that was called something like a thinly veiled attempt to discredit her views. In my defense, it wasn't. Truly.

As long as people hold certain views, they may be old-fashioned or out of style, but obsolete suggests they no longer exist, when surely they do.

Heather makes fun of older people for their opinions
Not because of their age, and I rarely make fun of people's opinions. I often dismiss them as baseless, but I don't make fun of them very often. I leave that to you and Hanners.

It's the same thing (ageism) in reverse. There was a lot of that from her in the cheerleader thread
No there wasn't.
You just don't read what is posted is all, you read what you want to read and skip over posts that are inconvenient to your view.

I specifically said being a biddy had nothing to do with either age or gender.

It isn't age <or gender> that makes one an old biddy. It's an attitude, an outlook, a joyless approach to life.

Actually obsolete suggest they are no longer of use.

Manners, decency and common sense will always be of use.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: I believe that... (10/20/2011 9:26:18 PM)

Which has nothing to do with anything.

SoulAlloy -> RE: I believe that... (10/20/2011 11:23:52 PM)

I believe that "We should fire up a doobie and forget about this dumbass poll " is winning, closely followed by "All folks are morons"

I added it after you said that was the only answer I ever gave.  The biddy brigade is cuter though, dontcha think?

The thing is, NS, as far as I saw in that and other threads where age came up, the old farts were saying basically "That is your opinion, I disagree, but it is ok to have different opinions.

Heather always comes back with you are old and you are wrong.

Which, to me, is one sign of youth.  The inablilty to know that someone can totally disagree with you, but it not be a judgement call on your opinions at all.

This, so thank you, Pam.

I enjoy discussion and debates where the participants are capable of stating their cases w/o a need to name call, obfuscate, put words in other's mouths, or attack other posters as a means to support their side of a discussion.

Occasionally I get pulled into these pissing contests, but as soon as I realize I have, I get out. I have limited tolerance for the petty vindictiveness I have seen on these boards of late.

BTW: stating you're right b/c you are older or YOUNGER is not a proper defensive position, in my opinion.

Editing to change the last statement to BTW: In general, stating you're right b/c you are older or YOUNGER is not a proper defensive position, in my opinion.

In the cheerleaders thread, I did think Heather's age (19) was supportive of her statement that she had a better understanding of how teens think and what they do, since she still is one.

YMMV

Live and let live. I've made my mistakes, you'll make yours. I've learned through living life, you will too. No one group is right or wrong. Nobody has the answers to your life except you. Do what makes living a joy for you and to hell with anyone who doesn't agree. No need to argue, no need to fight. To each their own.

Anyone want to wake and bake?

ultimately i think we're in agreement.

i just have issue with the way older people tend to totally write off a younger person's opinion, ONLY out of "well when was young i was stupid. so you probably are, too."
that's arrogance combined with justification, which is just as dangerous.

I generally agree with your "well when was young i was stupid. so you probably are, too," contention but what I think what the Biddy Brigrade wishes to see is an acknowledgement of at least the possiblity of truth in that statement although I would substitute inexperience for stupidity. Well, sometimes I might use the word stupid, but only if I'm feeling irascible. Should I live long enough I plan on being one of those white haired, stooped over, old men with a cane that I use to nudge everybody out of my way while saying things like, "move it, sonny." Hopefully, they'll be too amused to kick my ass.

Oh, that's wrong, just wrong. You know what's going to happen, don't you? You're going to end up with a warm beer and a cold pussy... and that's completely bass-ackward.

I'm in.
I don't believe I have ever fallen back on the "you are too young to understand line".  I might be wrong though, maybe I am getting senile.  I have very intelligent sophisticated kids, and I respect their opinions, so I believe there are wonderfully intelligent young people with lots of experiences and common sense and I also believe there are ignorant, close minded older people who have never bothered to learn anything and have nothing to add to any conversation.

Isn't it safe to say, though, that the longer one lives, the more experiences and learning you at least have the opportunity to absorb?  Of course that is going to change your beliefs, opinions and perceptions.  Experience has some value, doesn't it?  On the other hand, youthful idealism and energy has a value too.

I feel for young people, I think they are growing up in very hard times, and in many cases have had to grow up fast.  They have things of value to say and experiences to share, also.  It is too bad that there is this us vs. them mentality developing, and not just on CM.
