I have purposely not looked and avoided looking at any of the graphic stuff available about Ghadaffi folded spindled or mutilated (not out of personal sympathy!!). I have never watched that poor US citizen who went to Iraq just looking for work get beheaded either.

I feel (FOR ME) deliberately searching for or looking at death by violence would harden me.

How about you? Would you care to say whether or not you have looked and your reasons?

I have looked. It was there, in my newspaper, no reason to avoid it. And I wanted to check by myself if I could recognize him as him. And get some info about how he was killed.
No, I do not think that looking at death can damage me... anymore. For you, it may be a completely different subject.
Strange... I have written one novel in all my life. And that novel happened in a culture, in which people were separated exactly by this parameter - if they had seen (directly) a violent death or not. I am not inventing it, I can send you chapters of the novel. But in Spanish.

I didn't say I thought I would be damaged, just hardened.

Has your novel been published?

Ok, hardened. Same answer.
No, the novel has still not be published, right now I am not even trying, I tried for a while (three publishers) then I got tired of it.
It is there, and my friends and family could enjoy it. Maybe I stuck it in pieces and "publish" it in a blog.
It is... hum... medieval fantasy for adults. No, not for sex-obsessed: adults. Handles a bunch of serious subjects.

I avoid things like that, as a rule. Seeing Qaddafi like that certainly wouldn't bother me, because I can't help but see the justice in it, but I basically don't like gore. I am not hardened to it because I avoid it. And if it was gore involving people who are not as wretched as he was, I do find it disturbing. I also can't stand it if it involves animals treated cruelly.

I never ever look at those kinds of things. I think it's rather sad that our media has some kind of need to post such things and I find it all rather horrible and gruesome.

While I was in my boring cisco class tonight <we play around on the computers while listening to the boring lecture>, the kid next to me was looking at pictures of Gadhafi's death. I did everything I could to not have to see it but it was glaring right in my face. I finally whispered over to him asking if he could either turn his computer away or look at it later. He just laughed at me like I was a party pooper. Whatever. I just felt sick to see it. Yeah he was a bad guy who deserved what he got but I still see no reason to flash the pictures all over.

Then again  I'm not into blood and guts and gore and I don't even do the whole Halloween thing with skulls and blood and stuff. It's all way too depressing and morose.

I haven't looked yet, though I'm sure I will, just out of curiousity. I used to work with a make-up team, on mass casualty drills, and some of the injuries we would create are likely much worse than anything I'll see there.

I've seen enough corpses.

The fact that he chose the way his life would end generates no urge in me to view the outcome.

Seeing a number of piles of bodies with their hands tied or handcuffed behind their backs and shot dead after gadhafi forced pulled out of a town, was grim enough for me.

As far as our appetite for gore goes....we produce some of the most violent,graphic,bloody/guts filled films presently made. And I do beleive it hardens us and desensitizes us to violence, even if it`s faked in a movie or vid game.

I was watching CNN when the news/photo came in, so I caught it w/o trying.
That said, sure, I've looked up graphic stuff before. And I'm sure I will again. (I wouldn't mind seeing Bin Laden's body for example.)
Why?
Usually simple curiosity. No more. No less.
Heck, the body is dead, the soul has fled. It's just a piece of meat now. And I grew up hardhardhard, as in watched people die bloody agonizing deaths in front of me while still in my teens, so I'm pretty hardened about such things. Blood and guts don't bother me much.

Harden may not be the right word; most every combat veteran that has been in fire fights has witnessed and taken part in the death of others. We justify murdering our fellow man in a wide variety of ways but the sight in a man’s eyes during his last few breaths and the stench of death is never far removed from your thoughts.

I looked. I've seen enough blood and gore and some death in My youth and it was just more. I guess I'm one of those that hlen was talking about. hardened.

I am sorry but I just have to ask this: Do you apply the same logic to BDSM? Rape fantasies, slave fantasies, etc.
Best regards.

So you'd feel the same way if it was (say) a bunch of teabaggers tarring and feathering the Kenyan, or less hypothetically, a bunch of disgruntled Iraqis beheading an American war profiteer and bitchslapping his corpse all over Fallujah?

Yep I looked, I think I posted that it was gruesome out of respect for peoples sensibilities. I havent become hardened per se, I cringed watching the whipping of that chap where his back opened up, I have hard time with faces being blown apart and car accidents. I get emotional over kids n animal cruelty, but dead ....nope.

I believe so, too. I don't watch gore in movies generally either. I like scary, not gore.

ETA: After hearing about Dolcette on cm, I googled it. I went to a web site, bold letters warning on the face page that the following images were extremely graphic. It went on; "Are you REALLY sure you want to see it?". I elected not to.

It sickens me enough to read or hear about things like that.  I have no desires to have the images burned into my retina for all eternity.  I have seen enough in my real life, don't need to follow the worlds horrors too.
