ORIGINAL: Lucylastic FR When was the last time you went camping on a city street in your sunday or even workday best? Let me tell you you dont wear your sunday or a power suit best when you camp out in the middle of a city, after more than a couple of days, you dress for comfort and ease of access, AND you try to keep warm, together, humor, friendship and togetherness. Just keep looking down on them with your perfect assumptions that they arent normal americans Obviously, you've never been to Asheville, North Carolina, and probably not Western North Carolina at all. I did a stint there as an outdoors reporter for a local paper years ago. I hoped trains with hobos, hung out with witches, followed street preachers, panned gold, took folks up in the mountains in a literary sense to see things like the Brown Mountain Lights among other things. I was contract so I pretty much stopped by once or twice a week and took a look at the story board. If there was nothing interesting, I'd go hang out with the editor and see if I could interest him in something besides news. Asheville exists in an oxymoronic clash of liberal and conservative values. The city likes to call itself the Seattle of the south, while the surrounding mountains and country sides are still rural and filled with farms, single family residences where people still have yards it takes a riding mower to conquer. The central part of the city has a small square where people who call themselves walkers pretty much live. They're drum beaters, chanters, coffee shop cling-ons, and crystal traders. I'm not saying that as a joke or in a demeaning fashion. Their kids sometimes try to pay for things with rocks. When I say the Occupy Asheville crowd could have doubled as a crystal and bong gathering, I wasn't joking.
