Everyday america is not just white middle class, sorry to burst your bubble.

Honestly the snobby comments are laughable, Moon, beyond ignorant

FR When was the last time you went camping on a city street in your sunday or even workday best?
Let me tell you you dont wear your sunday or a power suit best when you camp out in the middle of a city, after more than a couple of days, you dress for comfort and ease of access, AND you try to keep warm, together, humor, friendship and togetherness.
Just keep looking down on them with your perfect assumptions that they arent normal americans

Obviously, you've never been to Asheville, North Carolina, and probably not Western North Carolina at all. I did a stint there as an outdoors reporter for a local paper years ago. I hoped trains with hobos, hung out with witches, followed street preachers, panned gold, took folks up in the mountains in a literary sense to see things like the Brown Mountain Lights among other things. I was contract so I pretty much stopped by once or twice a week and took a look at the story board. If there was nothing interesting, I'd go hang out with the editor and see if I could interest him in something besides news.

Asheville exists in an oxymoronic clash of liberal and conservative values. The city likes to call itself the Seattle of the south, while the surrounding mountains and country sides are still rural and filled with farms, single family residences where people still have yards it takes a riding mower to conquer. The central part of the city has a small square where people who call themselves walkers pretty much live. They're drum beaters, chanters, coffee shop cling-ons, and crystal traders. I'm not saying that as a joke or in a demeaning fashion. Their kids sometimes try to pay for things with rocks.

When I say the Occupy Asheville crowd could have doubled as a crystal and bong gathering, I wasn't joking.

but they are americans no??? weird or whatever even if they dont count as "middle class, american patriots" they are american, they have every right to be looked on as "AMERICAN" as you dont they?
they are human and they have exactly the same rights as anyone else
and honestly I wasnt aiming for you specifically.
you have shown compassion..Id like to give you more, but hey, you are your own person:)

Just about a half hours drive from Asheville is a sleepy little town called... Lake Lure. Anyone who has seen Dirty Dancing has seen the scenery. Gorgeous community. HTV gave away a home there a few years ago on their Home Give Away sweepstakes... nestled up on the hill top. Ah, I would have loved to own that.

Among its inhabitants are the artists. You can pan for rocks, you can buy the crystals, you can get frozen bananas on a stick covered with chocolate, you can buy bears carved from wood by chain saws. Chimney Rock is a focal point of the area.. and amazingly, it has a huge military retirement community with farms and laws that require riding mowers to cut the grass... and chain saws to tame back the wilderness. Within a 10 mile radius of my parents live 7 of my dad's old coast guard buddies. The Veterans Hall is bursting at the seams on weekends with retired military personnel from all branches.

Asheville itself is a quaint little town. Its a shame ST described it the way he did. My last visit was 2 years ago. Its one of those communities that demands scenic conformity of the businesses.... the local McDonalds does not have the huge golden arches or the typical red and yellow design.... just a sign out near the road.

Some very pretty pictures for those who care to look. Inside there is even a piano.

There are many artists in the area, that is true, But to paint the communities surrounding Asheville as hippie towns....even communities grow up from "years ago".

Just to add about Lake Lure....

Prospective residents choose among a broad mix of housing options with equally variable costs, from moderately priced older A-frames, rustic cabins and simple ranches on densely wooded lots (available for $150,000 to $200,000) to luxurious waterfront contemporaries and newer log homes with prices between $1 million and $2.5 million.

"Besides its obvious assets, what makes the lake such a wonderful place is the fact that there is no scene to speak of or discernible class divide," said Saunders.

"White and blue collars all live side by side, and no one cares if your house is worth $120,000 or a million bucks. We're all here for the same reason: to enjoy everything that makes it so special."

That's an artform now? Kewl!
(All hippie towns are mercantile communities these days anyway: they sell hippie schmutter to people who have the money for hippie schmutter and think that buying hippie schmutter makes them look a bit bohemian. That's how the hippie thing has worked in the 'States since long before the fat dead guy out of the Dead died, innit?)

Dan Sieradski, who calls himself the “de facto spokesman” for Occupy Judaism, an effort to rally the Jewish community out to the protests, was emphatic that those featured in the video were outliers — or as he called them “a couple of jerks and idiots.” He pointed out that OWS held services for Jewish High Holidays, which he said brought a thousand people, and that protesters have even been celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot in ceremonial structures known as Sukkahs, which have been built in 12 cities including London and Toronto.

I wouldn't except it GRAPHICALLY ILLUSTRATES the ignorance of the GOP and why they and the Tea Party will one day have their asses handed to them by this movement...
Gary Bauer: Jared Lee Loughner ‘Would Fit In Well’ With Occupy Wall Street
share Ryan J. Reilly October 21, 2011, 12:05 PM 3116 56 Remember Gary Bauer? Reagan’s Undersecretary of Education, former president of the Family Research Council and Republican presidential candidate? He’s got an interesting view on the Occupy Wall Street movement, as he informed supporters of his American Values organization this week. Recalling the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and the killing of six others, Bauer wrote that the “liberal establishment rushed to judgment and condemned the Tea Party” for the shooting. “As it turns out, the assassin, Jared Loughner, was an apolitical radical who would fit in well with the Occupy Wall Street movement,” Bauer wrote. “A friend told ABC that Loughner was heavily influenced by a movie called ‘Zeitgeist.’ One left-wing reviewer described the movie as containing three central points: ‘Religion in general, and Christianity in particular, are systems of social control. 9/11 was an inside job… And, finally, International Bankers … control our money and our future…’” Bauer is on the board of the Emergency Committee on Israel, which has been busy painting the Occupy Wall Street movement as anti-Semitic. “The media are quick to bemoan the lack of bi-partisan cooperation in Washington,” Bauer writes. “But the pundits and talking heads turn a deaf ear to all the hyperbolic rhetoric on the left. They were quick to point out one or two odd signs at a Tea Party rally, but they ignore the blatant anti-Semitism in the Occupy Wall Street movement.”
You guys let kooks like this out on the street?

When they say on national t.v. that "Jews" control the banking and publishing business that kina is "anti-semitic" don't you think?
And according to "American Layabout" magazine they should be wearing comfortble clothing and take rain gear just in case.

I live about an hour from Asheville. It has the highest RE prices for at least a 100 mile radius. Why you ask? Low supply and a HUGE demand. Thousands of retirees from the NE and FL have moved there and brought their cash. Asheville is somewhat liberal politically but it is FAR from a hippie town. Hippies, quite bluntly, can't afford to live there. If you want that, go a bit North to Boone.

So were you complaining about antisemitism when the teabaggers were saying that, then?

StrangerThan -> RE: Anybody even Give A fuck what Gary Bauer Thinks about OWS (10/22/2011 1:06:16 PM)

I described it that way because it's where I grew up. The place in your pic looks to be the McD's in Biltmore. The whole area down there has been co-opted by the Biltmore House people. So you folks ranting against the rich, well there they be.

None of what I described will be found in that area. What you can find though if you drive about a mile south, is Biltmore Forest, an upscale neighborhood right next to the Biltmore Estate. Quaint yes, but that same area.. at least up until maybe 10 years ago, still practiced segregation. You had to be Causasian to live there, play there, and even visit. You might still have to be. I dunno. I moved out several years ago. When I say white, I mean white. Jewish folk ended up occupying the opposite end of the city - North Asheville.

In between are the walkers. Probably not so much this time of year as most have headed out for warmer climes. I did a story on those folks too. The guy I hung with for a week.. his name was Mickey if I remember right. He should be headed for the Southwest about now. Billy Graham lives just east of Asheville.

And yes Lucy, these folks are human too.

tazzygirl -> RE: Anybody even Give A fuck what Gary Bauer Thinks about OWS (10/22/2011 2:00:37 PM)

yep, the areas are still predominatly white, no debating that. And The Bakers lived just outside of Charlotte in Fort Mill... My aunt and uncle live there. Upper scale area for sure... lots of money.

What you arent seeing is that I have no issues with people who are rich... I have issues with people who are rich who arent paying their share.

Warren Haynes' Christmas Jam is the improvisation music happening of the year. And Govt Mule makes sure the profits from it go straight to habitat for Humanity... Asheville's a real jewel.
