ORIGINAL: LadyHibiscus Okay. I am dropping the F bomb. FEMINISM. I am of an age where the "accepted professions" for "what do you want to be when you grow up, little girl?" were MOMMY, TEACHER, SECRETARY, NURSE. The nurturing professions? Maybe. The ones where the slack is picked up, the details dealt with, all that jazz. The secondary jobs, where there is responsibility without authority. If you are in a secondary position, you grab for what power you can---and INFORMATION IS POWER. So, yes, never forget. Wait and watch. Manipulate. These are the skills of the person who needs to make her own way. Or his own way. Politics is politics, right? Who remembers the 80's? How about the 70's? I do!! Go out to your netflix and rent "Mother, Jugs, and Speed", a silly comedy, and "Working Girl", ditto. You will learn more about the how women were viewed in the workplace in those two movies than in any scholarly study. That shit is real life. That history is RECENT, and we are not going to get over those patterns in a minute. Hib, who did not waste her time while she was in college. hmm, I just remembered ... I worked with a fourth female lawyer, several years ago. She was a criminal lawyer in Knoxville TN. Someone I know got into trouble, and I got her name through a referral of another lawyer friend that I know. There were two criminal charges pending against my friend. We talked with the lawyer, paid her retainer, and waited for the court date. Before it rolled around, she called and told us that she had gotten one of the charges out-right dismissed, and the second reduced (a lot). It was eventually dismissed as well. When I eventually asked her how the hell she was able to do all of that, without misc court appearances, filings and stuff, she told me it was easy ... she had breakfast with the judge on a regular basis, and took care of it then. [:D] Later, I had another issue in Tennessee (with a friggin' insurance company) that wanted to threaten me with some bogus BS (they wanted me to pay them $1000). I called her up, explained the situation, and sent her a check for $1250. She wrote them a very nice letter, explaining how she would just love for them to press the claim as she and I would just looovveeee getting a judgment against them for a frivolous lawsuit. Needless to say, that was the end of that. Overall, very good experience with a female attorney. Firm
