Firm is right about the memory part too. I've seen guys on our phone crews come to blows at times. 30 minutes later we're all having coffee together. Not so much with women.

Okay.

I am dropping the F bomb. FEMINISM.

I am of an age where the "accepted professions" for "what do you want to be when you grow up, little girl?" were MOMMY, TEACHER, SECRETARY, NURSE.

The nurturing professions? Maybe. The ones where the slack is picked up, the details dealt with, all that jazz. The secondary jobs, where there is responsibility without authority. If you are in a secondary position, you grab for what power you can---and INFORMATION IS POWER. So, yes, never forget. Wait and watch. Manipulate. These are the skills of the person who needs to make her own way. Or his own way. Politics is politics, right?

Who remembers the 80's? How about the 70's? I do!! Go out to your netflix and rent "Mother, Jugs, and Speed", a silly comedy, and "Working Girl", ditto. You will learn more about the how women were viewed in the workplace in those two movies than in any scholarly study. That shit is real life.

That history is RECENT, and we are not going to get over those patterns in a minute.

Hib, who did not waste her time while she was in college.

hmm, I just remembered ... I worked with a fourth female lawyer, several years ago.

She was a criminal lawyer in Knoxville TN.  Someone I know got into trouble, and I got her name through a referral of another lawyer friend that I know.

There were two criminal charges pending against my friend.  We talked with the lawyer, paid her retainer, and waited for the court date.  Before it rolled around, she called and told us that she had gotten one of the charges out-right dismissed, and the second reduced (a lot).  It was eventually dismissed as well.

When I eventually asked her how the hell she was able to do all of that, without misc court appearances, filings and stuff, she told me it was easy ... she had breakfast with the judge on a regular basis, and took care of it then.  [:D]

Later, I had another issue in Tennessee (with a friggin' insurance company) that wanted to threaten me with some bogus BS (they wanted me to pay them $1000).  I called her up, explained the situation, and sent her a check for $1250.  She wrote them a very nice letter, explaining how she would just love for them to press the claim as she and I would just looovveeee getting a judgment against them for a frivolous lawsuit.

Needless to say, that was the end of that.

Overall, very good experience with a female attorney.

I work for a woman now (at least until bitch* bugs out next week to another job). I work primarily WITH women now (the one male I regularly work with sets my Gaydar off BIGTIME).

I used to work almost exclusively with men, because of the nature of the work.

I am fortunate, because the women I work with now almost all rock..

so I would have to say that it depends on the personalities (yay captain obvious!! LOL)

(btw, Firm.. I saw the thread title and ALSO immediately thought it was a kevvie post!! LOL)

fuck yea. i have seen guys pick them selves up all bloody and shit, shake hands and buy each other a beer. it is some sort of primitive dominance display thing think, you know a "ha, you got me this time ya fucker, well done" thing. guys tend to get their aggression out quickly and its then gone, women don't, we usually keep it bottled up so it stays with us forever. you know the old saying "anything you say can and will be used against you at a later time of my choosing."

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 9:51:46 AM)

yuck. No thanks. You also learn a lot working with people every day. I think your analysis is nArrow minded
I don't know. I have been very conscious of this issue, since my office manager told me about the attitude towards women attorneys. I have also seen male Attorneys treat their secretAries horribly, and say things I can't imagine saying to another person. I can't believe they didn't get sued
Oh well, there is someone for everyone, and I hope C works for me until I retire. I treat her well, she treAts me well

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 10:04:31 AM)

I worked for 4 women, Two I liked, One was Neutral, and One was Useless. I have had better male bosses overall, and the worst bosses were male. So, from my perspective, the women were more gathered around the "average", and the men were all over the chart.

Now, the place I worked that was 95% women, well, those girls formed clubs in like 10 minutes of our first day, they pretty well seemed to leave the few of us guys out of the bickering. I'd recommend working in a mostly female workplace if you are male, the women tend to just focus on the other women, and you can sort of walk freely between the "tribes".

kalikshama -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (NOT A KEVIN THREAD!) (10/25/2011 10:06:46 AM)

The boss I learned the most from was a woman. She was demanding and uncompromising and taught me excellent work habits. She was a PhD, very smart, and had none of the "typical female" traits mentioned earlier in the thread. She's who first came to mind.

I also had a female boss who felt the need to coordinate her lip stick and sweater before going to yoga. Blech.

My very worse boss was a male Columbian version of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

Overall, I really liked being an assistant, and am flirting with the idea of going back to this when my website production project management job ends later this year. Male or female, as long as they ooze dominance or authority, I'm happy!

I have no problem with the sucking and swallowing
It just isn't a pleasant thought in terms of my colleagues, with a few exceptions.

I prefer working for men.

I do, as well. I prefer working for them and with them. There's just much less drama and more work gets done. I used to just blame it on my looks and write it off as jealousy but I think there's more to it than that. I have had many of the same experiences that have been shared in this this thread and also in the cited article. Woman can be really hard on other women.

SweetCheri -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 12:27:30 PM)

I have never had a job, so I don't know, but if the way girls in school (including university) behave towards each other then I can believe it. Suze works in a 100% female environment, no men work there and almost no men frequent the shop, and she is always complaining about how this one or that one is being a bitch. Hannah Lynn works in the opposite situation, almost all men and mostly male customers, and she never comes home complaining about her bosses or co-workers in that way, so again, I think there is probably something to it.

littlewonder -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 12:35:21 PM)

I'm a secretary. My last position was as a legal secretary. I have worked for women twice and twice for men. I loved working with the men. I abhored working for the women. It was a nightmare and I can completely agree with the article. Working for men was a whole helluva lot easier. They were friendlier towards me, liked to actually speak to me, would have lunch with the rest of us, not treat us as lower ranking and worthless whereas the female bosses were tyrants, mean spirited, harsh and just plain down right cold-hearted. I dread working with female management. Blah.

LaTigresse -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 12:43:52 PM)

I am 49 going on 50 and have been working most of my life. I have worked for men and women and have had men and women work for me. My experience has been as follows.

If I want to learn the most about my job and be held the most accountable, be the best I can be at my job, I would prefer to work for a woman.

If I want to do whatever the fuck I want, within reason, slack off, end up running the show, I would prefer to work for a man.

As a boss, if I want low drama, not mind having having to occasionally prod to get the work done, but without a lot of whining and moaning, few excuses and work days missed, I would prefer to have men working for me.

Women as employees have always been more manipulative and will almost always get away with more shit with a male boss than a female boss. I've seen it every single time. A female boss will usually see right through the bullshit and expect, demand, the female employee give 100% with no excuses. Usually because she holds herself to a higher standard. Unless of course she is a corporate climber that manipulated her way to her position. Then the only people that 'like' her are the guys she either has dirt on, or is fucking.

Male middle management are usually lazy, sneaky, back stabbing bastards just trying to slide around, letting others take the heat and slide in to take the credit. The women below them play up to them if they think they can get ahead, or gain slacking points. The women above them are gunning for their heads, unless they can be useful. In that case they are using them.

Female middle management are either damned good at their jobs and completely under valued, or, they are sneaky manipulative twits. The first totally rock and are usually awesome to work for IF you are good at your job and share their work ethic, the second are those to avoid like the black plague. They only care about what is in it for them and will do whatever it takes to get where they want.

Age also plays a huge part in all of the above......if I had to pick the ideal employee I would pick a male, over 40. Second would be a female over 40.

That being said I have had excellent employees that do not fit that criteria but male tends to be my preference as I have zero patience for 90% of the excuses why a woman cannot perform her job adequately.  Probably because I hold myself to such a high standard of behaviour in the work place and value a good work ethic.

"I cannot come to work today because I don't want to get out of bed." is not a good work ethic.

My two favourite bosses EVER were both women, because of what they taught me. Without them, I would not be where I am today.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 12:45:16 PM)

Well hell.  With these attitudes, I can understand why women attorneys have a hard time finding good assistants.  But, it really doesn't matter to me, anymore.
I have always been polite and proper to the women who work for me, if not cordial.  I am not a cordial gal, so if that was the expectation, it wasn't going to happen. Nor have I ever wanted to be their mother, their confessor, or their BFF.  I just want to get the job done.   On the other hand, I have seen male attorneys scream at their secretaries and treat them horribly, one former partner in particular..  I have also had the experience of male attorneys blaming their secretary for them missing a deadline and such.  I have NEVER done that, and I think it is kind of bullshit.  Nevertheless, as a new female attorney at my old firm, I felt like I was treated harshly be certain members of the staff.  It didn't happen often, but I felt like some of the staff occasionally manufactured problems where none existed.
In any case, after a long and difficult search, I have found my dream assistant.  She certainly doesn't seem to mind working for me, and I try to make her job as pleasant as possible.  Last year, I even paid her year end bonus out of my own pocket because my male partners didn't want to fund staff bonuses.
There is someone for everyone.

LaTigresse -> RE: Working For A Woman ... (10/25/2011 12:49:28 PM)

Based upon my past experience an office full of women where the boss is a man, quite often is absolute hell as far as cattiness and back stabbing. There are usually one or two that learned how to manipulate the boss and he believes whatever bullshit they feed him. The other women are seen as competition, and often treated horribly. I've seen women that 'didn't fit in' ridiculed, set up, and made to quit, crying.

It starts at the top. If whomever is running the show allows the twats free reign, it's a fucking mess.
