No, not particularly. I haven't seen anything in my own experience that would indicate that people who dislike overweight people are more prone to any of that laundry list of faults you rattled off any more than people who harbor other dislikes. Maybe one of us needs to get out more often and it could be me.

With all the fat threads we see around here, I hate to add one more to the onslaught, but I have noticed something about those that post or that I have known throughout life that dislike over weight people. Personally, I believe that people that make a big fuss about a persons weight seem to be less tolerant about many things in life and with people. From what I have seen, they tend to be real emotional OCD types, harsh, less compassionate than others, opinionated to the point of unmovable, regimented, superficial and sometimes insecure. I tend to just classify them as anal and whether I was skinny or not, I didn't want much to do with them.

Do you think my take on this has any merit from your own experiences?

Yes...I agree. But not only someone who fusses about overweight people, but someone who fusses about a class of people in general. I have a friend...a very good friend...who continually pokes fun of other people - for being too short, too tall, the way they talk, too fat, too skinny...you name it. Hard to believe, but really, she's a very nice person at heart. She has some major insecurity issues (and rightly so, knowing her history) and so that is how she compensates.

I have to think it is similar for anybody that "makes a fuss" about an overweight person. For what reason? There is something internal going on, there.

I make my own sweeping generalization, at that point, and try to find compassion for the person who is putting down overweight people. That person must be harboring some poor feelings in order to have to pick on another person in order to bolster themselves up.

And, as noted in other posts...this isn't about not being attracted to overweight people. This is about disrespectful treatment of any class of people.

Years ago from eating all the wrong things and too much of them and drinking a LOT of beer I balooned up to 247 lbs and of course I wasn't getting any excercise! Not even walking!
Now I'm a fairly big guy 6'0" broad shoulders, thin hips but that was simply waaaay too much weight for me to be carrying around!
The fat went to my stomach, face and chin (s)
I was miserable! I had no energy, I had to go out and buy my "fat clothes" because I could get in my regular clothes, I was in-active and felt like shit. So one day I just got sick of it, I started walking 3 miles twice a day, then 4 miles, then 5. I stopped drinking beer and cut down to one tuna fish sandwich instead of my usual three washed down with two beers or cokes. I drank a lot of water until I was sick of it, juices and that diet lemonade stuff.
I allowed myself (1) coke a day at night. I was being a lot more active around the house, fixing, painting, replacing.
I probably went from 4,000 calories a day (thanks to the BEER!) to about 1,500.
It didn't take long before I started feeling better both psychologically and physically, after about a month or so and the pounds were were melting off.
I went from 247 down to 219 in six months!
When I was in high school I was 6'0" and 165 lbs, a string bean. But, we walkind everywhere then, we'd think nothing of walking 5 miles to go horseback riding and and 5 miles to get home.
I was used to being fit in the military and didn't like the position I'd put myself in.
I asked a doctor years ago if all the fat people had thyroid disease and she said, No, it's been my experience that maybe 2 or 3 out of 100 have it and the others are simply taking in too many calories and not expending enough calories. " "It's that simple."
And a few months ago I joined Weight Watchers because the gym wasn't making me lose the pounds fast enough; I lost "3 pounds" the first week! ("APPLAUSE!")
We don't see a lot of fat people at the gym, just a few and they've been doing a good job sticking with it. Also at the new year we get 5 or 10 but they're gone by the middle of February. But, as I've said before whenever I go to the Chinese all you can eat buffet I always see fatties. (probably "carbon loading" for the Boston Marathon.)
And of course I don't stare at them or say anything to them.
Now if (I) could motivate myself from being a big fat slob twenty years ago to losing 38 pounds or so in six months what can't anyone else?
I used to watch that lady, Susan Powter on t.v. and she'd say "stop the madness, get up off that couch" and I have to admit that she probably got me going and I (was) lying on the couch when she'd say that! lol
They told me at the gym that my "ideal" weight is 209. I'm 228 right now and I've set a goal to be at "209" by March 1, 2012.
So watch out ladies, I'm going to be HOT in my tight pair of wranglers, Stetson and muscle shirt! No pushing and shoving!
Like someone else said , "they have hundreds of excuses" just like I did!
What do you do when you run out of excuses?
Go out and take a walk!

I hate everyone equally. Physical appearance is irrelevant.

I've seen plenty of slim or athleticly built bodies do a number of nasty things, just as I have seen over weight people do a number of nasty things. I am equally disgusted.

The only thing I have noticed is that people are more tolerant of the habbits of others when they are physically attracted to them, whatever those triggers may be.

I typed/thought it up myself based on my own experiences and observations.

I would say I'm probably somewhere in between 3 and 4.  I'm not overly attracted to a fat man but I'm neither unattracted if all of the other qualities I dig are in the mix.

Yes, there are different types of disgust.  From what I see those that are a 1 or 2 react and feel disgust about many things that aren't personal on a personal level.  Fat is just one of many.

It's not that I don't like or tolerate fat people; it's that I can't get it up with someone who's fat. I was abused by a fat person when I was a kid, so it probably has something to do with that. I tried dating fat women three times, and could never 'perform' with them, to the embarrassment of both of us. So, never again. There are plenty of females who are too thin for other men, so I'll be there for them. To me, the main attraction is the mane attraction, I like women with long hair. Big breasts aren't what I'm interested in. So please, don't be mean to me just because I'm turned off by fat. It's not a conscious decision.

Getting turned on or not getting turned on by any given person is rarely a conscious decision, nightfly. If only it were!

Bigots are bigots. It is frowned upon to say malicious things about people of other races or religions, but it's safe to abuse people who are overweight.

Yes, that's true as well. But I can't see how it answers my comment . . . .

I find women sexy by the sparkle in their eye. Size and weight has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

Lockit, in response to you.

Many who fuss about the overweight do seem to be superficial, I agree. In the LA area, where I live, the cult of physical beauty is pervasive and obnoxious.

I would extend what you say about "less tolerant" to include "less charitable". It seems very easy to become fat and very hard to become thin. Yet, most people are judgmental of the characters of the overweight.

That being said, I don't like to look at fat people. Or sit next to them on airplanes, either.

Not too long ago, extra weight, as well as our common preoccupation with food culture (celebrity chefs, cooking shows, and expensive kitchen gadgets) would have been blamed on gluttony, one of the deadly sins. But we're all going to hell in a hand basket unless we can learn to help our fat brothers out of this societal problem.

Except the 19 year old's.....we were all skinny once.

I like bigger women because the younger (thinner ones) don't have the mental capacity to keep up with me.

To play the devils (or fat chicks) advocate here...might be a bit of sarcasm inserted too, just for fun.

Everyone has to eat, even us fat folks.  Sometimes we go out to eat, rather than hiding in our closet, sucking chocolate syrup right out of the bottle, in between bites of our Big Mac and spoonfuls of sugar and lard.

Sometimes, our thin friends wanna go to the all you can eat place, so, we go, even knowing that if we get up for seconds, be it salad or that huge plate of dessert, folks are going to say "Look at that fat hog eating everything on the damn buffet!".

We do this because, get ready for it, fat folks can be social animals!  We forget sometimes that our mere existence offends some people.  We forget that some folks think we should stay in our house, wearing our moomoos (like that spelling?), and stuffing our faces while we make piglike noises and sit in our own stench.

Some of us even have the audacity to wear a bathing suit and go to a pool or the beach!  We know if offends the sensibilities of the unfat people, but, have you ever tried to get a fat ass in a normal tub?  We have to go out in public for our once a month bath, even when we don't wanna!  I won't even tell you what we do to get clean in the winter time, but, here is a hint...those big sinks at the buffet place where they wash dishes are wonderful.

So please try to not let us ruin your meal.  Next time you are out, look at how many unfat folks go back to the buffet 2 or 3 times.  That will give you something to do that will keep you from watching us eat with our hands, letting the food run down our chins.  You won't have to see our eyes glaze over as we fill our plates with nothing but breads and chocolate cake.  Hopefully, this will allow you to enjoy your meal.

Disclaimer: This fat chick has not eaten at a buffet since becoming Serv-Safe certified 6 years ago.  They are nasty places, with too many areas for food contamination to occur.  It must be those fat folks who only bathe once a month huh?

I like shot bald guys, if they have a sense of humor and a good personality. If they suck, I just admire their shin y heads.

The only thing I have noticed is that people are more tolerant of the habits of others when they are physically attracted to them, whatever those triggers may be.

And there is the key.

I don't ever see myself getting lusty over a really obese person. I also don't see myself getting all hot and bothered over a set of big saggy tatas...just not something that turns ME on. I don't dig stupid and I get all 'ewwwww over a person with bad hygiene. Anyone that smokes is going to be a big "oh fucking hell no!" because the smell just makes me want to hit them, hard, very hard, in a very bad mean way.

As a general rule, men don't really do it for me either. But yanno, I don't hate them. Just don't want them in my bed.....or too close to me for that matter.

Reality is that there are an awful lot of people with bad manners. If they want to blah blah blah on about how some quality I have doesn't do it for them or grosses them out.....quite seriously it's not my problem. If they are being rude or nasty, it only reflects poorly on them, not me.

On here we have one poster that likes to wax poetic about how gorgeous and beautiful he is and how pathetic most of the rest of the world is. If I wanted to pay any more attention to him than the occasional passing glance I give him now, I am 100% certain I could find something he has said that may apply to me personally. I could then get offended by it and rant on and on pathetically about how terrible it is that he and others, feel that way. I haven't the time or the give a damn to bother. The truth is, his blathering only reflects poorly on HIM. Not on any of the people who resemble in any way, his slurs.

The reality is that more people in this world are fat than not. Morbid obesity IS an epidemic. Until we stop allowing morons to offend us and quit making ridiculous fucking excuses for why we are fat......we are going to stay fat and grow the epidemic.

I am real fucking intolerant of a lot of things and the people closest to me would give you an exuberant 'Hell yes she is!" with wide eyed head nodding. I sincerely do not see any god damned reason why I owe it to anyone to be tolerant of their shit. As long as they keep their shit out of my way and don't try to shove it down my throat demanding I be tolerant, we will all get along.

I am pretty heartily sick of all the kumbaya hand holding 'we need to be tolerant of A B and C' especially when it comes out of the mouths of hypocritical twats that have proven THEY are intolerant of X Y and Z and will argue until they are blue in the face, or in this case until their fingers are numb to attempt to validate both. It's bullshit.
