The Kent State shootings—also known as the May 4 massacre or, frequently, the Kent State massacre[2][3][4]—occurred at Kent State University in the city of Kent, Ohio, and involved the shooting of unarmed college students by members of the Ohio National Guard on Monday, May 4, 1970. The guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.[5] Since then, people have been extremely careful of using the military, in any form, to control civilians. There was talk about calling in the National Guard into North Myrtle Beach back in the 90's to control the Black Bike Heritage weekend (thats not a racial slur... its what that weekend is termed) In the late 1990s, when Mark McBride ran for mayor of Myrtle Beach, he promised voters he'd eliminate Black Bike Week. When elected, he sought to deploy the National Guard to monitor the presence of black people on the beach during the Black Bike Week Memorial Day Weekend. McBride was unsuccessful in his attempts to deploy the National Guard. Needless to say, no one wanted the NG there for that. We are eager to see them during hurricane season... but not for crowd control.
