Haven't some police lost their jobs because of the 1% destroying the economy? Aren't the police officers attacking the protesters part of the 99% or did they suddenly become millionaires? If they had any intelligence, wouldn't they be protecting the protesters instead of attacking them? Since the police are too stupid to be trusted to protect American rights, shouldn't the president station active military at the protests to protect the protesters from further attacks by police? I know some retired military are already doing that. I saw a video of several police officers backing down from a retired marine sergeant.

The police officers are doing their jobs. You can't pick and choose which laws to enforce.

Remember Kent State and tell me you want national guard there.

The cops, for the most part, are following orders.

Funny, the president is a democrat and the democrats are supporting the occupy movement.   You have confused this situation and evidently decided the president was a republican.

Too true, what is also true is that the police are legally barred from using excessive force.....that's one of those pesky little laws too

Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately excessive (Beyond what is considered acceptable, proper, usual or necessary. ) falls within the framework of experiences establishing precedent, standard operating procedure and individual perceptions of health and safety hazards and/or risks at the moment.
The police were doing their job, the job we pay them to do using standard operating procedures and I can assure you the United States Marine Corps has not endorsed the demonstrators nor has it offered support. Neither has the retired Marine Corps Officers Association or the Marine Corps League.
Retired and separated (Discharged) Marines are a formidable force in numbers and their voice will be heard via the ballot box in a disciplined orderly manner.

Actually, many cops I'd imagine are part of the 53%.

The president can only station active duty military inside the United States with authorization from Congress. Posse Comitatus.

The president could deploy the military if domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order; . Insurection Act.

As it stands, neither of these can be placed into effect at this time.

"Did you just call me a pussy communist?" -- Sheriff Buelton in response to a military officer's citing of posse comitatus in his reluctance to help capture an armed tank. Tank (1984)

I just couldn't resist.

The full exchange is below:

Sheriff Buelton: They're gonna lose, General. They're goin' down in flames and you're gonna help me do it. I just got back from the governor's office, and I can have him call you or he can call your superior if that's the way you want it. But, either way, I'm gonna see some tanks rollin' out here to stop that maniac.
Maj. Gen. V.E. Hubik: Go ahead, call anyone you like, sheriff. I don't take orders from governors. Sergeant Major Carey's resigned. Besides, he's committed no major crime in my jurisdiction.
Sheriff Buelton: He stole a god damn tank!
Maj. Gen. V.E. Hubik: It's his tank he can do what he wants with it! The most I've got him on is busting a twenty foot section of fence.
Sheriff Buelton: General, I am the local civilian authority and I am hereby making a formal request of the military to do everything in its power to assist and aid me in apprehending known...
Maj. Gen. V.E. Hubik: Posse Comitatus, sir.
Sheriff Buelton: Did you call me a pussy communist?
Maj. Gen. V.E. Hubik: The U.S. Army is, by an act of congress; Posse Comitatus act, specifically precluded from enforcing civilian law outside the military reservation.
Sheriff Buelton: Pussy communist?
Maj. Gen. V.E. Hubik: That means I do not have the authority to provide you with a single piece of military equipment or personnel without a direct order from my superior or the President of the United States. I can give you his address, if you'd like.

You are under the assumption that Police/cop's where created to protect and serve the general population... Historically that view is false. As Police where created mostly to protect criminals before trials and the rich. In the instance of police brutality against protestors, the police are still fulfilling their primary purpose for being: Protecting criminals from law abiding citizens and protecting the rich.

+ If you give cop's tanks and tons of other neat "toy's" they will be quick to use them. The police forces need to be demilitarized and limited in arsenal.

Spoken like a true, gun-nut, conservative. Trying to get on the OWS-bandwagon to further your own petty agenda, aren't you? Thought no one would notice, right? I dont attribute what a 'few bad apples' with police officers as 'the norm' of all police officers across America. They have their tools (as expensive as they are in some cases) to combat criminals who are becoming ever more sophisticated with their activities. Its the same reason why I dont call for a gun ban every time some gun owmer is involved directly (i.e. guilty) of being a 'first time offender with a firearm' that kills one or more people. I have the wisdom to reconize that the majority of gun owners are not 'bad apples'.

The difference is that responsible gun owners, myself included, work hard to educate or eliminate the irresponsible ones (eliminate by reporting and correcting their irresponsible actions, not eliminating with prejudice).

Police don't work that way. The 1-5% that are a disgrace to the badge and spread dishonor thru the department are frequently protected. I wish I knew why that is. My friends on the force can't answer that either.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-20124777/semper-fi-non-active-marines-called-to-occupy/A

new group called Occupy Marines is calling on non-active duty Marines to support the "Occupy" protest movement. The group was formed online to support the Occupy Wall Street protests after videos circulated online of a Marine confronting New York City police, questioning their tactics used against Occupy Wall Street demonstrators. In a video that has received nearly 2.5 million views, Marine Sgt. Shamar Thomas of Roosevelt, N.Y. an Iraq War veteran, spoke out to police in New York's Times Square, charging that they were over-reacting to Occupy marchers - and shaming their uniform. "This is a not a war zone," Thomas said. "These are unarmed people. It doesn't make you tough to hurt these people. If you want to go fight, go to Iraq or Afghanistan. "Leave these people alone," he yelled. "They're U.S. citizens! U.S.! Stop hurting these people, man. Why are you all doing to it to our people? "They don't have guns! It doesn't make any sense! "How do you sleep at night? There is no honor in this. There is no honor in what you're doing to these people! ...You're here to protect us!" Thomas' outburst came after video of a New York City police official pepper-spraying protesters was circulated online. Later in the video, Thomas answered questions from cameramen at the scene. He said he and both his parents have served in the military. "We fought for this country, I'm from New York City, and these cops are hurting people I fought to protect. "There's no honor in hurting unarmed civilians, and I won't let that happen," he said. The group Occupy Marines says, "We will support demonstrators with organization, direction, supply and logistics, and leadership."

No policeman is going to lose his job due to a downturn in the economy. The rich tyrants will simply offer the rhetoric that "this is a time when additional law enforcement becomes necessary", and the police budget goes up. The police already employ the next-to-finest military technology, equipment and training. The days of "Officer Friendly" have gone the same way that "Retirement Plans" have gone. What the tyrants need now is a heavy-handed force that is only a shirt color away from actual military doing their bidding. The police do not see themselves as part of the 99%, because they get paid based on what they 'might have to do', as opposed to those of us who actually get paid based on our hard work, productivity and performance. The reason a majority of them become cops in the first place, is either because they're out of the military (which has to engage in war in order to justify their budgets) or they aspire to have the authority to back up that attitude. Secondarily, they're guaranteed job security with perks and state benefits. Make no mistake, no cop empathizes with the 99%.
