She's deaf because she had to have bilateral ear surgery on both ears, probably because, like the other dog that's deaf and had the same problem, people before it was rescued left it with to many severe and un treated ear infections, and with deaf dogs you can train them with hand signals and today we attempted, and was sucessful in her first sit. I asked the rescue owner if I may start working on her knowing signs and got permission, so I look forward to that.

That's awesome! I hope you have continued success with her training.

The end result will be worth it even if she is more stubborn learning some commands than others.

I thought a lot of dogs Ive had over the years were deaf. Turns out they were just ignoring me.

I have kids like that!

About difficulty teaching commands, John Lyons, the horse trainer said in a clinic I attended that he would prefer a horse takes two weeks to learn a command instead of getting in quickly. Because the ones that learned the commands in ten minutes forgot it just as fast, but the ones that required repeated reinforcement to learn it never forgot it.

Can't imagine it won't be the same with the dog. Good for you for doing this.

Thank you Lilly, but she's not mine, she's waiting for adoption, however I work with her. I do believe however that any future dog I get I will train in voice commands, as well as asl, cause of the eventuality if they go deaf they'll already be trained.

I'm not going to teach her and just move on, we'll work on it as long as necessary to make sure it's in there good and firm! :)

Thats so awesome! I once thought about doing some fostering but I'd have a hard time letting them go. I took in a cat from my mothers neighborhood that has turned out to be deaf. She was severely malnourished and flea bitten. My son fell in love with her and she primarily lives in his room. So she's here to stay.

In some ways I think it's kinda a mean mind fuck to foster to the dogs, cause they won't understand being in a home and getting attached then going to a new home and starting all over when adopted, but fostering also allows skills that create a greater adaptability too. I want to be an emergency foster mom to doggies.

my westie was taught the same commands with hand signals and voice commands.

My next door neighbour didn't believe he could follow just hand signals until one day he was sitting on the window seat looking out, while I chatted with my neighbour in the garden. Without saying a word he did a sit, lie-down, sit again, stand and then bark and be quiet. All with hand signals

Sadly my bichon couldn't get the hang of it, but smart dogs can pick it up pretty well

this really made me smile. Good for you TFB and I'll bet this will do you just as much good as the dog(s) you work with. Getting out and doing stuff like this has got to be good for you.

It does do me a lot of good I think, yes, Sure I get sad sometimes cause I wanna take a doggie home and we can't right now, but the happiness out weighs the sadness. They're so happy to see a human come to the door of their kennel, and they're so loving. When I go into the special area where dogs who can't be in general pop are, those dogs always swarm the fence, and swarm me. I talk to them, I sing to them, I pet them. With the ones who need to learn some manners or better around human manners, I try to help them with that. It's a good gentle physical activity too.
