My mother regularly confiscated my Operation game.
She would come into the room shouting
"You're doing that on purpose!" meaning
I was making it buzz to just hear it buzz
and watch the red light go off.
I remember Life to though not really well.
I remember there was a spinning wheel in
the middle of the board and the game
pieces were little cars and when you got
married or had a baby you put a little
plastic peg in the car representing spouse
and babies. I don't remember how you won.

I don't remember how you won Life either, but I remember it was fun anyway. Maybe that's the point. =p haha
I liked the cars and little peg people.

I remember playing Milles Bourne on camping trips with my folks :) Uno, too.

I liked Battleship a lot, too.

LanceHughes -> RE: I'm bored so I'm going to rate board games. (11/14/2011 5:47:25 AM)

Milles Bourne was BIG in my family.  The randomness "worked" for me and my two sisters, the three of us being very close in age.  Chess?  For me!  I was VP in H.S. chess club.

Stratego with close male friend (NOT that way, you perves)  He had the game, so I kept asking Santa for it.  Never did get my own set.  Wooden blocks, each with King, knight, Castle, etc. printed on one side.  Otherwise, Identical.  Blue one side, red the other. You arranged them on a chess board, faces toward yourself in what you hoped / figured / KNEW was the right strategy to win.  Then, you started to move the pieces and challenged the opponents piece.  Each challenge had different rules as to who "won."  Sometimes pieces came off board, when they didn't, at least you knew what the piece was. If you got to the King, well, you won.   Sort of like chess, but hidden knowledge.  Sort of like Battleships, but more variety.

My sisters had Life and wore that out with their g/fs. I thought the little peg kids were too much like playing with Barbies.  Come to think of it, there was no "gay" option.  Maybe I was "aware" before I knew. LOL!

ETA: Chinese checkers was good - next door was a family with 4 boys, so we could alwasy get enough to play.  Only one problem - marbles disappeared instanly.  Mothers gave up replacing them about third time round. LOL!

Is H.S Chess any different from straight chess?
More queens and the bishops are unfrocked?

tolovetolaugh -> RE: I'm bored so I'm going to rate board games. (11/15/2011 10:02:36 PM)

Went to tuesday night board games tonight. Was tons of fun, everyone was joking and laughing far more than usual. Will rate what I can remember. [:D]
Played :
Modern art-Great transaction style game, you auction off paintings, and try to predict what your opponents are doing and through your predictions manipulate the hell out of them. Never met a board gamer who didn't love it, takes about an hour and holds 2-4 people. It's light and takes about 5 minutes to learn, so played rather often.
It gets a 7.

Coda- Played this for the first time tonight. LOVED IT! I played it twice in fact, and if the guy who's game it was hadn't left, would have found a way to play it some more. It's a quick to learn, quick to play, logic game. If you loved master mind as a child, you may find a few similarities to have you bouncing as excited as I was. 2-4 players, about 20 mins, but it can go much quicker. You have to figure out, (at first via guesswork, but later in the game through logic) what numbers each of the other players tiles are. Sounds simple, but small things excite me(they must if you use my last bf as an example Baaaazing!)
9! Cause I am smitten.

St Petersburg- A classic in board game circles- every time I play I get my strategy closer to where I want it. I think I might finally have it figured out, but it is very subject to change depending on what cards come up the first round. The mistress card is what won it for me tonight. It is a card based game in which you start by aquiring peasants to earn you money, use that money to buy buildings and nobles to get you more money and victory points. Takes a while to learn and can take up to 2 hours depending on the group. Very competitive, with the occasional card swiping, not because you need it, but because they needed it and you didn't want them to have it! 2-4 players, unless you have the expansion, turning it to a five player game, but honestly not worth it in my eyes.
6.

Played a few other games, but damned if I can remember their names. Finally wrangled everyone's numbers so I can start setting up hosted games other than Tuesday nights behind the game shop.

High School Chess Club.

Sorry, I didn't get your joke - but I know there's one in there someplace.

One of the guys hosted a game night at his house tonight- we played Struggle of Empires. Loooooong game, took two hours to learn, and another two before any of us figured out what we were doing. All in all a 8 hour game.
I hated it in the beginning, but the more I figured out strategies and starting playing the others against each other, the more I liked it.
It is 3-7 players, each player taking a country on a 18th century world map... you than expand, and wage war, with a bidding game to pick your two allies.
I was Mother Russia, and used my goofy, realllllly bad Russian accent whenever someone dared challenge me.

Not for the casual player, but once you understand the rules, not bad- I give it a 6.

Someone please come play scrabble?

Moonhead -> RE: I'm bored so I'm going to rate board games. (11/26/2011 5:24:48 AM)

One thing I do wonder, reading through this thread, is whether Car Wars is considered a board game or an RPG?
(Brilliant fun in either case, of course.)

There were a lot of other fantasy/SF vaguely roleplayey boardgames in the '80s as well. Two really good ones I remember were by Games Workshop and might not have much of a rep in the 'States: Talisman and Judge Dredd. GW did a Judge Dredd RPG as well, but they did a pretty wonderful boardgame first. Lots of artwork from the comic and a board drawn by Ian Gibson (who's easily the most underrated Dredd artists, as well as one of the best, probably because he's done a lot less work in the 'States than Carlos Equezerra, Dave Gibbons or Brian Bolland...)

http://isc.ro/

You have to install it, but it's the best interface I have found. No gimmicks or ads, just pure scrabbley goodness. On a unrelated note, I now want scrapple. And I think there is some in the fridge! I be back.

GreedyTop -> RE: I'm bored so I'm going to rate board games. (11/26/2011 7:41:07 AM)

Hey, just wait a minute, I happen to love Haggis!! Although I've learned not to eat the canned stuff, it does funny thing to your stomach the next day.  OK, not so funny things.  But the real stuff?  I could eat it every night for supper!  It was definitely an acquired taste, and I acquired a taste for it.  [;)]

I love to play Scrabble! Where?

Oops, sorry, just saw your post above.[sm=doh.gif]

laborboleta -> RE: I'm bored so I'm going to rate board games. (11/26/2011 7:45:16 PM)

Anyone remember War? It's a card game where each player throws down a card and the highest card takes all the other cards thrown. Used to play it with my brother as kids. if both cards were the same denomination there was a playoff that I can't exactly remember. Could take hours to finish.

Loved  CandyLand as a kid. MilleBourne was a favorite even as an adult. Skipp-O (sp?) was a family favorite.

I have a beautiful ceramic Chinese checkers board on the coffee table in the living room. Used to have all the marbles set up but then the cats found their way into the room.....don't think I'll ever retrieve all of them.
