I don't think shane is losing his humanity. Humanity is just more complicated tha people like to think sometimes.
The Otis thing is weighing on him, and losing an important emotional connection in a situation like they're in - everyone you knew and loved is dead - the he fell in love with Lori and clearly loves Carl, but they're "gone" in a way, too.

What would anyone do in the Otis situation? You're the last hope a kid you love like your own has to survive a dangerous surgery, you HAVE to get the supplies back. You're stronger, faster, and more experienced but you're injured. You also have a sense of self-preservation, which is normal. In that split second, with the zombies gaining on you, what choices do you have? Do you let the zombies eat the both of you and let the boy die? Or do you do something in the hopes that the strongest one might make it back and the kid will survive?

Shane hasn't done anything that would make me peg him as a "villain" yet - he's splintering, yeah, but if you think of a character as a human, you can see why. If he really was this heartless bastard, the Otis situation wouldn't be so hard for him to deal with.

I dunno.  I guess I don't expect great acting in zombie flicks.  They are, after all, zombie flicks.  Believability is not what the producers are going for.

The acting is shyte though isn't it?

Seems the main protagonists only have a couple a facial expressions, with variants of head-angle to add emphasis.

I dont know how far it has gone Stateside, but ere Im downloading the second series one at a time, and everytime I do, I wonder why!

Really good points, Lilly, but I don't think they want him "pegged" quite yet. They do want us asking the question.

Shane as an outright heartless bastard would be too two-dimensional, and we could all, and would all, be yelling at our TVs for his banishment, or worse. What they're doing with him is much more interesting.  It seems clear that the writers are making him an ambivalent figure, so we can all debate whether he's good or bad. His challenging our protagonist is good evidence at he's at least a hothead, and at worst, a cold-blooded killer. Dale's speech telegraphs that.

All of which makes him the most interesting character these days, and kudos to the writers for cleverly keeping their options open and letting the tension build.

If anyone is interested in catching up on the show, AMC is having a marathon of all episodes for NYE. Starts at 11/10 central.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The Walking Dead (12/31/2011 9:52:13 AM)

I watched both seasons in the last couple of weeks. I think the group is going to split, or at least change leadership. If I had to choose between Team Rick and Team Shane , I would definitely choose Shane, Rick is an idiot. And I wouldn't want to go anywhere without Darrell, he is the perfect man for the zombie apocalypse.

erieangel -> RE: The Walking Dead (12/31/2011 3:08:34 PM)

For all of Shane's "bad-ass" attitude about the rules of life and surviving having changed, who was it that stepped forward to put an end to zombie Sophia?  Rick isn't an idiot, he just doesn't believe that the rules have changed all that much.  Sometimes that does lead him to make the wrong choices, but Shane has more wrong choices when it comes to human life.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The Walking Dead (12/31/2011 5:29:28 PM)

Honestly, the zombie sophia event was only weighty because she was a known character. People were shocked to see her, and they paused, but I'm sure shane would've done it, too. Or darrell, or any of them. Rick's not special for that.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The Walking Dead (12/31/2011 7:03:16 PM)

Rick was helping the crazy doc bring zombies to camp and prattling on about property rights. Team Shane. Or whatever team Darrell is on

Walking Dead starts back up on Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PetiteOralSub -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/9/2012 4:37:30 PM)

yanno
I was so excited there was a zombie show on tv,
then I watched ...
it moves a little slow sometimes. or is it me?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/9/2012 5:39:47 PM)

There is a big difference in quality between the first season and the second season.  That is because they fired the original director, which is too bad.  I have read some of his ideas for what he would have done for the second season, and it sounds way more interesting than what was actually done.
Having said that, I love Walking Dead!  Sounds like Shane's days are numbered, though.

It's you. [:)]

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/9/2012 7:30:53 PM)

Yay!  I have really been looking forward to the return of the show, although time did seem to fly.  Seems like just yesterday I was wailing about how long a wait Feb was!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/9/2012 8:24:27 PM)

Aaiieeeeee so excited!!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/12/2012 7:22:07 AM)

Sunday has arrived ^_^ I caught a Season 1 marathon last night while channel surfing and being awake too late. Kinda weird seeing characters that are gone. =p

Can't wait for tonight -- Winsome, I remember saying "February?!! Seriously?!!" and now look -- it's here! ^_^

I rarely get this excited about TV, but it's just such a great show.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/12/2012 8:30:13 PM)

I wish I would have caught the marathon now, since I don't know who those two guys were that showed up out of the blue at the bar.  Grr.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/12/2012 8:45:10 PM)

(NOTE: If you haven't yet seen it, be warned, and don't read posts until you've seen it.)

---------------

Those two guys were new altogether, so no worries on missing the marathon. Pretty bananas ending.

DomMeinCT -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/12/2012 8:45:48 PM)

I've taped the 2nd half of the marathon and now desperately have to find time to catch up with the new episodes. The show has some flaws, but it's engaging and I can't wait to see what happens next. I just keep marveling that there's a ZOMBIE series on TV. [:D]

The purpose of the two guys in the bar was to reinforce the tone and mood of the world they had created to the viewers. Because the charachters are so engaging, and so familiar, they needed to remind people that there are other survivors out there. Some will be helpfull, some will not. And it is that point the writers needed to reinforce so that people don't become comfortable with just the hand full of regular charachters.

also, rick is a badass quick draw.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The Walking Dead (2/13/2012 1:22:44 AM)

It also shows that not every one who's survived is a "good guy," either, like the people we've gotten to know (and yeah, I include Shane in that).
These two guys seemed friendly and decent at first, but their malicious intent became clear very quickly -- even though they made similar pleas to Rick that Rick had made to Herschel, there's a difference in their intent -- Rick wanted to stay to make everyone safer, these guys wanted to take the farm for themselves.

It was also a way to sorta "prove" that Rick can make good decisions, and do morally difficult things. When the world has ended, and two totally healthy guys show up and threaten you, is it okay to kill them? Every human life is suddenly worth so much more now, but so is your own life, and so are the lives of your family and friends. And these very limited resources you have and can't afford to lose in any way need to be protected, too. Unfortunately, you CAN'T share with everyone.

I'm glad it was Rick this time, anyway -- I think they've heaped too much stuff onto Shane for now. =p
