I think it's called mouthing, but what ever it's called it's damned painful and rude. The first time they did it, I was walking into the sanctuary for the first time and they were all excited, and this second time, I was sitting down directly in front of the dog, and another dog was next to me and I was paying it attention. Then the dog that did it latched right onto me, I shouted ow, and no, which is what I was told to do because some dogs have done it before, and it let go then a few second later it did it again and this time wouldn't let go until I applied pressure to the sides of its jaw.

I would get in trouble for hitting dogs at the Shelter and be told not to come back, most likely. Plus I don't believe you need to hit dogs to train them. I admit, however sometimes I was guilty though of smacking both our dogs when I was at the end of my rope with them.

Because they don't have gripping hands...just be glad your experience is not like mine...My daughter has a Sheppard mix and when she wants your attention she bites the crotch.

Maybe your wrists taste/smell good (seriously) ...using anything on your body that might explain that?

No. Though I do not have a dogs sense of smell, so maybe they like the smell of my natural skin. I do think in some ways it's an attention getter maybe.

Some dogs in shelters are there because they're way too hyper, were not taken care of very well by their former owners, are mean, never trained, bite, bark a lot, etc....

They "mouth" because you're their chewtoy.

Most the Golden's in this place have been abandoned or not taken very good care of, or have been surrendered. Some have manners, some do not. I do know the young 1 1/2 year old mouths cause he still has the manners of a puppy. This older dog may not have any manners however.

My GSD does this. Most of the time she does it very gently and usually when I first get home, or she wants me to go with her.

I've tried my best to completely stop the behaviour. She is a doll otherwise and only does it to G.D. and myself. She is a velcro dog, always nearby where she can see me and preferably touching me in some way. She is just very tactile. With her, it's not a dominating behaviour more like an "I wanna hold your hand." As long as her mind stays where it should, submissive, and she stays very gentle with it, I will allow it.

The dogs do this because they are excited.

If this was your own dog, I would tell you to go back out the door when it does this, coming back a minute or so later.

Since these are shelter dogs, you should give them a toy. You can train them that they only get attention with a toy in their mouth. Retrievers and Labs LOVE dummys and balls.

This is a relatively common behavior in retriever type dogs. It isn't aggression. While I think it is sometimes, although rarely, OK to hit a dog, this is not one of those situations. Say no or hiss at them' and provide an acceptable substitute. Some dogs are very soft and just the word no will be enough, others need stronger corrections. You have to learn to read the paritcular dog. For a shelter dog, I would err on the side of caution.

He "bit" hard enough to leave a pink mark I could see a few hours later, faintly bit I could see it , and it hurt, so not soft at all. I did say no loudly , but he didn't listen so the second time I ignored his request for attention and gave some affection to the other girl who was behaving nicely, he seemed to get the picture.

I'll try to carry toys with me when interacting with that poochie..

While some dogs latch on to the wrist for different reasons, all dogs understand dominance. Rather than strike the dog in the head, gently but firmly grasp the dog by the back of the neck and close to the head, then push the head down to the floor, hold the dog in this position until they cease to struggle. Once they quit struggling, they have accepted your dominance over them and will behave much better in the future. With a truly stubborn dog, you may have to repeat this process several times for long term correction. Also accept the fact that some dogs are not capable of submitting but most have gone through this procedure many times with litter mates and older dogs and so is quite natural.

It is OK to adjust the strength of the correction to the individual dog, too. I have one older male that is so soft, a cross look is enough correction. I have another, younger male that I have to be pretty severe with. We have had some knock down drag out fights, and that is what it takes to change his behavior

Iamsemisweet, yes, my dad, he only had to speak sternly toGinger, and she did what he wanted, usually, but then sometimes she wanted to be a complete shit, cause she was in the garden an wanted to bark at the dogs behind us an not listen and he got rougher, he got the hose out and sprayed her, and then the next time she wanted to be a shit an he went for the hose, she high tailed it out of the garden as fast as possible.

In all of my years working with alpha dogs I have yet to meet one that was incapable of submitting to a human being. I have only seen human beings incapable of dominating the dogs.
