ORIGINAL: mnottertail And the USSR, of course, was nuke capable and the chinese had money, and they didn't get along all that bad.... There is an interesting story there... The USSR was helping China to get nuclear weapons. It was not for the money, they were allies (the Chinese had, at that time, actually not much money at all). But Nikita Khrushchev (a great man, we all owe him our lives) was trying to establish better relation with the USA (Eisenhower)... then he saw what Mao was doing during the "cultural revolution" and finally visited Mao in China. His conclusion was that the man was out of his mind. He spoke merrily about the possibility of a nuclear war, because he considered that it would not damage a country like China much (overpopulation, small infrastructures) and it would destroy completely the USA (a country with huge infrastructures and depending on them). Khrushchev smiled and all, but was disgusted and afraid, and commanded the soviet scientist to withdraw from the Chinese program and even leave some intentionally wrong data behind. China got the bomb anyway, but later, thanks to Khrushchev.
