Haute Couture (noun) The designing and making of high-quality fashionable clothes by leading fashion houses, esp. to order.

Perhaps I'm just stodgy, but if this is high fashion, count me out!

Fall-Winter 2011-2012 Haute Couture Fashion Show, Paris

Does Dior understand that we know that chick has a yellow cube on her head?  Was Van Herpen on an acid trip?

What were these designers thinking?

..ummm..maybe.. Lady Gaga???

Imo, they make some designs outrageous for the runway to grab media attention but i doubt they actually sell some of the really, really weird ones. There are certain designers that I do like tho, I am very picky on which designs i do like..

That stuff isn't Haute Couture, it's Advant Guard and hideous. It's almost like they have all tried to outdo each on the weirdest look to see how stupid women are and if anyone will actually buy it and wear it. Who was that chick that wore the swan disaster? Bjork or something right?

Or maybe they are all trying to get Lady Gaga to buy from their house.

My favorite is the intestines dress. There's just something about wrapping what looks like nasty body parts all over you in the name of fashion that just makes a girl feel...pretty...

I was once watching a special on tv where a runway designer was interviewed about these outrageous designs. According to him he said they were not meant to actually be worn but only made for other designers who can use them as templates and ideas for trendy clothing for the fashionista.

Many people don't realize that Lady Gaga is the love child of Marilyn Manson and Madonna.

Haute cotoure is not intended for sale, it's meant to test out interesting concepts and take things to extreme places in order to play around with fashion as an artform, and possibly gain insight for future production lines. Sometimes the pieces are sold, but almost never mass-produced. It's a lot like a concept car - you know how at big car shows there's all these weird cars with crazy angles and new tech? Same idea, except 1000x less awesome.

the tentacle dress looks like something out of creepy japanese porn. =p

i don't believe "high fashion" is for anyone to actually wear -- to me, it's like art projects. it's sculpture. =p

and sometimes, i think they're just goofing off, trying to see what they can puke up on the runway and what people will "ooooo" and "aaaaah" over. =p

Dior understands the haute couture is never intended to be worn by anyone other than someone on a catwalk or the very wealthy with odd taste. If you watch the movie The Devil Wears Prada Meryl Streep explains it very well. It all starts with an outlandish idea then someone else sees something they liked. Then someone else does the same and so on and so on. Little things get removed. Little things get added. In the end we end up with what we wear but had it not all started with an outlandish idea to begin with than lord only knows what we would end up wearing. Oh, my, she said it so much better than I just did but that is how it works. Besides who doesn't remember platform heels, bellbottoms, glam metal, mohawks, goth, and goodness do you know what steampunk is ?

Haute Couture fashion shows are always
over the top. The hair, make up and
accessories are exaggerated for effect.
The clothes are made for the show
the only people who wear them other
than the models are rich private clients
who have them custom made.
Fashion drips down. Buyers, stylists,
fashion editors and mainstream
designers watch the shows to get
ideas. They snatch things from the
big picture to set the coming trends.
Fake fur, wide collars, florals, classic
lines, hot colors, etc.
This gets filtered down to mass market
lines in the department stored.
I loved Bjorks swan dress and Gaga's
meat dress. They're artists and
performers and are expressing
themselves. And making sure
they're in the papers and all over
tv and the Internet the next day.
The Armani dresses in the last pic
were beautiful.
