I always thought this stuff was the fashion equivalent of concept cars. Not intended for mass production or really to ever be worn in public but a testbed for new ideas, fabrics, etc.

Haute cotoure is not intended for sale, it's meant to test out interesting concepts and take things to extreme places in order to play around with fashion as an artform, and possibly gain insight for future production lines. Sometimes the pieces are sold, but almost never mass-produced. It's a lot like a concept car - you know how at big car shows there's all these weird cars with crazy angles and new tech? Same idea, except 1000x less awesome.

Exactly. It's the extreme end of what will be modified down to be worn on the street. I love looking at haute couture and this has been done for decades, taking the look over  the edge. I don't want to pick of Vogue and see pictures of models draped in JC Penney anytime soon.

For some reason, those pix made me think of the movie "Wild Wild West" with Will Smith.

Wild Wild West is definitely a movie with a steampunk aesthetic.

personally i adore steampunk. =p for me, it's one of those things that I realized i was kinda doing all along. =p i don't take it to the hilt some people do, but it's a dreamy aesthetic, at least i think so.

hmmmm....Medusa's snakes fell, a cheesehead had an accident, a huge African Gray ate a skinny chick, an angel costume went very very wrong, some chick that never shaves forgot to mousse her pubes AND some chick is carrying around 2 aliens that are hugging.

I am so glad I adore jeans and flannel shirts!

Runway fashion always look bizarre. I doubt if anyone buys those outfits, with the exception of movie stars and Lady Gaga. The main purpose is to highlight trends in shape and color.

Ya know... that high fashion looks to me more like a costume ball for an H.P. Lovecraft convention.
Do you think the designers might be channeling the artist Giger?
