DarkSteven -> Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 6:12:42 AM)

"Cain's campaign said earlier Friday it is considering filing a lawsuit against Politico, the news organization which broke the harassment story last Sunday.

A possible lawsuit "is being discussed," Gordon told CNN. Gordon declined, however, to discuss the timetable or legal basis for such a move. Cain and his campaign aides have been highly critical of Politico's use of anonymous sources, among other things."
Taken from http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/04/politics/cain-allegations/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
Journalists have gone to jail rather than disclose sources.  Politico's use of undisclosed sources is nothing new.  And note that Cain has never denied the claims. Except when he's had to backpedal later.
Regardless of what I otherwise think of a candidate, threatening to sue the press over breaking stories that he'd like to stay buried is an automatic disqualifier for me.  Hypocrisy for him to feel it's okay for him to do things but wrong for them to get reported.

DomKen -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 6:16:54 AM)

What possible basis for a suit exists?

It's not defamation if it's true and Cain has acknowledged the Politico story is true.

Journalists have gone to jail over anonymous sources when prosecutors tried to compell them to reveal the sources. Cain, even if he sues, won't be able to pursue the source since there is no issue of fact that needs to be resolved.

Has that ever stopped a lawsuit?

Owner59 -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 6:36:51 AM)

Tries, is the operative word here.

They are just besides themselves and still in denial.

One week ago......."Mark Block here...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6VnTqpTqvQ

This guy Block was self-congratulating himself and making I`m-all-that like comments like" Carl Rove would have never thought of that".Heard Henry Kissinger thought the ad was cool too.

Here`s Block this week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rGPNVFpkoc

Defensive,shaky,spitting and lost,ordering people apologize.

This is Block`s fault. It was handled amateurishly and still is, with the suit threat.

Yeah,sue the media.....that`s real presidential.[8|]

Right up there with Obama's miserable failure to exclude Fox News, huh, Owner59?

To the OP:

One of my big concerns with Herman Cain, no matter how much I may like some of what he's presenting, is his lack of experience in the political arena. This is a nice example of that.

Owner59 -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 7:11:07 AM)

Calling a duck a duck isn`t exclusion...although a rightist might feel that way about it....poor poor righties.....so put upon.....

I think it was refreshing ,honest and NOT politically correct to point out that fox in the media arm of the GOP.

You're missing the point.  Even if Politico wins the suit, they will have been forced to spend big bucks to defend themselves.  Cain has millions to burn.  This is a serious threat, and a blow to free speech, even if the suit is frivolous.

Lucylastic -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 7:38:29 AM)

Obama didnt threaten to sue fox, they alienated themselves, but had he done, there would have been blood in the streets.
Cain shouldnt get a pass on this.
he should be ridiculed, this is a jerk off position

Nope. He took it upon himself to declare which media outlets were, and were not, legitimate. As anyone who actually gives a fuck about free speech (instead of liking it when convenient, and trashing it when it isn't, as our friend Owner59 does) was happy to see, that strategy blew right up in his face, and he was doing interviews with them again soon enough.

We don't actually have a lawsuit here, merely some talk about talk of one, but I think it exposes Cain's lack of political savvy.

Are you calling Fox legitimate?

Yes. They are a lot of other things I don't care for as well, but they are absolutely a legitimate news outlet. If you really want to go there, do remember that anything you might come up with to suggest otherwise will be measured against CBS and the forged documents on their flagship news broadcast.

Hmmm.  You may be right.  Threatening the media ( as opposed to disparaging it like Palin does)  really isn't that savvy a move.

bighappygoth39 -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 10:40:14 AM)

Maybe he's realised he isn't going to be able to handle the attention that comes with the job and he's trying to scare off the nominators before he gets stuck campaigning?
Let's face it: if the Kenyan isn't a one term President, then whoever the GOP puts up against him next year is going to pretty well fucked in terms of political credibility come the next round of elections.

tazzygirl -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 12:32:15 PM)

I sorta hope he does. All those files will have to be unslealed... and the events made public.

I don't think so. Politico surely has lawyers on retainer and a motion for summary dismissal shouldn't be that hard to write and should be automatically granted by any judge.

We're not talking about CBS, CNBC, CNN, ABC or any other of the alphabet soup. Fox is the worst of the bad.

Fair and balanced my ass. They are neither.

Remember. They were refused a license in Canada because they wouldn't stop lying.

Opinions are like assholes, Hill. Until the network boys decide everybody has seen every Simpson's rerun enough times, they don't even have a platform to compete with the malpractice perpetrated by CBS.

Owner59 -> RE: Uh oh. Cain tries to throttle the media. (11/5/2011 6:24:36 PM)

dick misses Beck......<tears up>.....[:D]

Fox is not a news network. It`s an opinion/entertainment station.

They don`t break stories or do reporting.Ya`know...news.

They read the news wire and then spin, twist and distort the news to fit the rightist POV.That`s where all their effort goes.

Where do you think sanity gets all his twisted whacko stuff?

More bullshit strawman. You poor little thing. I must terrify you. Are you getting some counseling for that? Maybe some nice anti-anxiety meds?

Who shot you out of a cannon tonight.....? lol

Of course you miss Glen.[:D] He was such a big part of that station you call "news".
