A different kind of "test". Based on the way you pronounce words and the names you have for certain common items it determines which part of the US most influenced your vocabulary.

My 'result' was; "41% Dixie. Barely in Yankeedom".

Until taking this, I never understood why beth called my "sneakers" "tennis shoes". Now I know it's yet another California "thing".

The test is bogus.  If you select "caught = kawt" for Question 6, the result will be "Way down South in the land of cotton."  Bullshit.  Everyone in New York and most people in New Jersey say "kawt" for "caught."  I stopped right there.

57% Dixie.  Barely in Dixie.

I am from Indiana, you know.  However, my parents lived in Rhode Island for a long time (I was conceived there... shudder), so some of their phrases rubbed off on me.  I am embarrassed to admit it, but I do have a slight Indiana twang.  I notice it when I get talking particularly quickly, or when I'm around people who don't have it.

Ditto, minus the Jersey accent.

It gets complicated.  Is the -aw- a pure vowel or a diphthong?  For most of New York City and northern New Jersey, it's a pure vowel.  For most of Long Island, it's a diphthong.  In Southern Jersey it's a pure vowel too, but not the same pure vowel.

All of this is evidently beyond the makers of the Yankee/Dixie test.  What I THINK they may have had in mind instead of "kawt" is "kote," which really is a very Southern pronuncation ("He kote the baol.")  That too can become a diphthong (something like "keh-o-ut").

LOL like I need a test for that. Some of the questions were kind of cute though.

100% Dixie.  Is General Lee your grandfather?!

Born and raised in Alabama.
I have a friend that is from New Jersey, and I am constantly having to say, "What did you say?" or "What does that mean?"
Once he made a comment to the effect of  "I will be back shortly, I have to bring my daughter to school."  I was like wtf?    "Ohhhh you have to take your daughter to school"....to which he said, "no I am bringing her to school".....LOL...yeah okay, whatever, hurry back?

There was a big dispute over "take" vs. "bring" after the publication of the latest Chicago Manual of Style.  Basically, for the first time, they decided to add a section on grammar and usage, and many of their recommendations were absurd.  I forget exactly what they said about "take" vs. "bring," but it didn't conform to the speaking habits of about 90% of the country.

55% Dixie. Barely in Dixie

Well I was raised in OH, and use a varity of the words they had, like icing and frosting, just depends what my brain picks at the moment. I call gym shoes tennis shoes and gym shoes. I say y'all, but in CO they say youse....LOL.

I think the fact that people move all over the US it would be even weirder if people didn't have a mixture in their vocabularly. Heck we learn to speak by the people that raise us, my sister-in-law has the whole southern speech thing, yet her daughter will be raised in the north, I bet the kids pick up the southern speech as well as some northern speech.

My question is this; on the one that asked 'what do you call the bubbly water', how many besides me looked for 'sodie water'?
