The government is here to help teach the Christmas Tree how to improve its image...

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board.  The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)).  And the program of “information” is to include efforts to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States” (7 CFR 1214.10).

To pay for the new Federal Christmas tree image improvement and marketing program, the Department of Agriculture imposed a 15-cent fee on all sales of fresh Christmas trees by sellers of more than 500 trees per year (7 CFR 1214.52).  And, of course, the Christmas tree sellers are free to pass along the 15-cent Federal fee to consumers who buy their Christmas trees.

Pst... Will... take a look

Summary

This rule establishes an industry-funded promotion, research, and
information program for fresh cut Christmas trees. The Christmas Tree
Promotion, Research, and Information Order (Order), was submitted to
the Department of Agriculture (Department) by the Christmas Tree
Checkoff Task Force (Task Force), an industry wide group of producers
and importers that support this program.
Under the Order, producers and
importers of fresh cut Christmas trees will pay an initial assessment
of $0.15 cents per tree, which would be paid to the Christmas Tree
Promotion Board (Board). This Board will be responsible for
administration and operation of the Order. Producers and importers that
produce or import less than 500 Christmas trees annually will be exempt
from the assessment. The program is authorized under the Commodity
Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 1996 (1996 Act).

a few more Christmassy alternatives.. [:)]

-go to a small tree farm (under the 500/yr sellers) and cut your own. My ex and i used to do that and it was neat watching other peoples kids telling their dad which tree to chop down..

-you could dress in black and chop down an neigbors tree in the middle of the night.. (I have heard of that being done, Christmas lights and all, gone).. the down side is you wont be popular if anyone finds out... [:D]

-you could buy little live trees and grow your own (that will take a few years tho but I expect that tax will increase in the future)

-you could probably buy a big live tree in a pot and plant outside after Christmas.. (I've done that too)..

Weird I thought the christmas tree industry pretty much had the marketplace cornered on christmas trees!! Sure its only 15 cents but if they want to improve the Christmas Tree industry (translation: make it more profitable) surely it should be done on their own coin rather than impose a government tax that presumably would be expensive to administer?

TheHeretic -> RE: Obamas New 'Christma Tree Tax' (11/8/2011 7:47:39 PM)

And not a peep yet, from the atheists, who might actually have a point about promoting an establishment of religion. Maybe they should call it an Xmas tree tax instead.

Seriously, un-fucking-believeable. When in doubt, create a new federal program.

Sanity -> RE: Obamas New 'Christma Tree Tax' (11/8/2011 7:48:15 PM)

A nickel here, a dime there... its nuthin'.

Cant imagine why the country is so fucked up though. [8|]

(If its "just" fifteen cents then why are they doing it).

SternSkipper -> RE: Obamas New 'Christma Tree Tax' (11/8/2011 8:02:53 PM)

Well ... TIME TO BREAK THE NEWS TO THE KIDS
"Kids, you know that $35 Tree Daddy takes you out to White's Christmas Tree Farm to cut each year? Well The President says it's gonna be $35.15 this year. So Daddy's cancelling Christmas"

What I want is a prediction of how much corporate production time will be lost to passing this fucking non-starter around the world along with the constant re-tooling it so it looks like the LOCAL BLOCKHEAD is the 'originator', thus deluding at least himself and the other two idiots in the smartphone rock band that plays the office every Friday a half hour before the clock actually strikes 5 every weekend. It's got to be in the billions.
The OP should be proud of his spreading this fucking mush like a virus.

SternSkipper -> RE: Obamas New 'Christma Tree Tax' (11/8/2011 8:07:41 PM)

I'm wondering if this is the final straw that causes the OP to start looking at Carcanos

And I thought that funding bunny inspectors was bad.

What is bad about the image of Christmas trees anyways?
