midmichiganguy -> Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/8/2011 8:15:15 PM)

So far this week I have been in Meijers, Kroger, Walmart, and Target and so far not a single one of those major outlets has anything for Thanksgiving! Instead they are all playing Christmas carols, have Christmas lights and displays up and look at you like an idiot if you ask about Thanksgiving decorations. *sigh* Yeah, it is not as popular as Halloween or Christmas but damnit I would at least like to have the option of buying something in a store that is related to Thanksgiving!

No need to explain to me why this is happening or why the city I work at had Christmas lights up on their poles the day after Halloween. I am a business major and understand the marketing and resource reasons behind it. So I am just a bit sad by it all as it seems like we are losing the holiday spirit for Thanksgiving. Hopefully I am not the only one out there who noticed this or feels this way. But then again, maybe I am! lol

I used to like thanksgiving when I was younger. These days it's just another day. Everyone around me has to work so I'm going on vacation.

M-guy, that's an easy one, there's no money in Thanksgiving except for the supermarkets.
What are they going to sell, paper turkey decorations?
That's some of the things that they don't teach you at Harvard business school.

Gee, popeye. I guess I dun did not figure that one out on my own thar! Hence the statement of mine saying that no explanation was necessary. But gee, thanks for enlightening me there mr. obvious with your insipid insight.

It bothers me too. Not so much the skipping of Thanksgiving, but the rushing of Christmas. I fool them though. The only time I buy decorations is when they go on sale after the holidays and I buy my presents all through the year as I catch sales. Once the season hits I don't go near the stores unless absolutely necessary.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 4:50:48 AM)

Nordstom's had a great sign about how they won't be "decking their halls" until after Thanksgiving.

I think Thanksgiving has kind of become a little unpopular, and also a little unfeasible for many. It's not a gift-giving holiday, so stores aren't as likely to make money from it. Plus, a lot of Thanksgiving and Christmas things are similar; as far as food is concerned. So why not package everything in Christmas wrapping instead of paying extra for Thanksgiving and Christmas wrapping. This way, your products can stay relevant on the shelves. Fall decorations do come out, but kind of just whenever the season changes, and they usually come out alongside Halloween stuff, as an alternative to ghosts and ghouls, etc.
From a marketing perspective, there's really not a whole lot of money to be made JUST in Thanksgiving stuff, so nobody focuses on it. Getting people in the "Christmas spirit" earlier means people will impulse buy sooner and they'll buy more.

I like Thanksgiving because it's a nice day to sit around with the family and cook a ridiculous meal and invite people over. I remember the day I got to cook the turkey (I'm a vegetarian, now, but I still know how to cook =p) and it was pretty friggen delicious. =p But honestly, in my family, most Sundays were like that. Country people cook Thanksgiving almost every Sunday. hahaha
Still, I'll probably take a 6 hour roadtrip and head home -- holidays like that mean a lot more when 1) almost everyone has died and 2) I don't see the ones who are still here as often as I'd like.

Missokyst -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 8:38:02 AM)

I hate the retail push for the holidays that "count" Moneywise. Halloween is a huge deal for retailers. Candy, costumes, decorations, and even movies they can promote for big bucks. Thanksgiving is just too small for most to consider. That is more of a profit margin for grocery stores. So right after halloween comes xmas. There are LOTS of xmas dollars in retail. In most stores over 70% of their entire year profits come from that holiday season.
gad I hate winter.
This year both my girls who work in retail will be working on Thanksgiving.
We are going to put off the feasting until Saturday when they are both off work.
Holidays are not holidays if you have to work.

I know that it's because Thanksgiving is not the money-maker for the retailers that either Hallowe'en or Christmas is, but it still bothers me. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.

HannahLynn -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 9:43:00 AM)

well, for starters, it might help if you celebrated thanksgiving on the right fucking date instead of a month late. besides, what the fuck is a thanksgiving decoration anyway? what do you do, put up pictures of turkeys?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 9:53:06 AM)

You guessed it!  Also, candles shaped like turkeys and pictures of pilgrims.  It is a lame holiday, except for the food.  And the fact that the day after Thanksgiving, those of us who aren't mall rats go wine tasting!

yea the food is fucking good. but you guys do it too close to christmas, i mean its more or less the same fucking meal for you guys, so thanksgiving is like a practice run or something.

Depends on the family and their ethnic traditions. My family traditions hail from the Ukraine so we tend to do ham or prime rib for Christmas dinner. If you are traditionally Italian, the big meal is Christmas Eve (not Christmas) and it is the 7 fishes with loads of pastas.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 10:47:40 AM)

I hate turkey, so I usually do goose or prime rib.  I am leaning towards goose this year.  In any case, the pie is the best part.

One Thanksgiving, I cooked a goose, which is actually kind of a process.  Between brining and rendering, and then roasting, it took two days.  We left the goose on the counter to rest after we took it out of the oven, and when we came back into the kitchen, it was gone!  My dog, a counter surfer if there ever was one, had stolen it and eaten the whole damn thing.  She didn't even leave a greasy spot on the floor.  That year, we did vegetarian for Thanksgiving.  Thank god for pumpkin pie.

If I hadn't loved that dog so damn  much, I would have killed her.

You forgot the cutsie little drawings of Pilgrim and Indian children holding hands... Because, as we all know, it has been nothing but peace, harmony, and luvin' giggles between the natives and the European settlers since day one.

Seriously, that aside, I must object to your calling it a lame holiday. The food is awesome, getting all the family together is great, and in an increasingly depressing and cynical world, it doesn't hurt to have a day set aside to recall that we do have things to be thankful for.

Like hell! Christmas in my clan is very English - roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Yum!

<Poor HannahLynn...if anyone ever held a gun to her head and told her she couldn't use the word fuck in one measly sentence because she'd be shot...she'd be dead in one millisecond! >

My opinion concerning Thanksgiving is that it may as well be called "the forgotten holiday."

I think in our present-day society, people are too busy whining about their "have nots" rather than giving a thought to their blessings.
And sadly, a sincere "thank you" is almost an expression of the past.

Respectfully submitted,
Clickofheels

LaTigresse -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 11:46:29 AM)

I fucking love love LOVE Thanksgiving!!!!!!! It is MY DAY! My holiday most favourite. The day I can cook myself silly and there are ZERO expectations except getting the family together and enjoying one anothers' company.

While the grand kids tear through the huge stack of Xmas catalogues that are collecting around my house, deciding exactly what ALL they wish to get for Xmas. And chances are, they won't get any of it.........because they've already got too much fucking shit.

I probably should have added a few more 'fucking's but I am feeling rather rushed at the moment.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Where did Thanksgiving go?? (11/9/2011 11:47:24 AM)

Fuck me HL. That's a fucking load of fucks in a fucking single fucking sentence about fucking swearing. Fuck!
