Nordstom's had a great sign about how they won't be "decking their halls" until after Thanksgiving. I think Thanksgiving has kind of become a little unpopular, and also a little unfeasible for many. It's not a gift-giving holiday, so stores aren't as likely to make money from it. Plus, a lot of Thanksgiving and Christmas things are similar; as far as food is concerned. So why not package everything in Christmas wrapping instead of paying extra for Thanksgiving and Christmas wrapping. This way, your products can stay relevant on the shelves. Fall decorations do come out, but kind of just whenever the season changes, and they usually come out alongside Halloween stuff, as an alternative to ghosts and ghouls, etc. From a marketing perspective, there's really not a whole lot of money to be made JUST in Thanksgiving stuff, so nobody focuses on it. Getting people in the "Christmas spirit" earlier means people will impulse buy sooner and they'll buy more. I like Thanksgiving because it's a nice day to sit around with the family and cook a ridiculous meal and invite people over. I remember the day I got to cook the turkey (I'm a vegetarian, now, but I still know how to cook =p) and it was pretty friggen delicious. =p But honestly, in my family, most Sundays were like that. Country people cook Thanksgiving almost every Sunday. hahaha Still, I'll probably take a 6 hour roadtrip and head home -- holidays like that mean a lot more when 1) almost everyone has died and 2) I don't see the ones who are still here as often as I'd like.
