Petronius -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/26/2006 7:59:48 PM)

To return to Lisa's basic questions that she used to start the thread:

1) Have I "seen people with this disorder try to immerse themselves as Doms [or Dommes] or Masters?" Yes. Frequently.

2) She went on to write "I do not believe that you can be a Dom/Domme/Master/Mistress with this disorder." They can be. They are not very good at it. They can actually be quite incompetant. But they're there.

But perhaps I wrote to soon about the "immerse" issue.

Rather I think that are people with NPD who dabble, not immerse, with bdsm matters. They haven't the psychological or temporal stability to stick with it over any period of time nor can they handle the frustrations that inevitably develop.

So they are around, most for not very long.

Actually... you see, the medical model has had HUGE influence over the way American psychologists conceptualize so called "mental illness"...

In medecine, you have a disease that is presumed to cause symptoms. In the better cases, treatment will cure the disease, making symptoms disappear... That is the medical model.

In psychology, you have symptoms... Let's say that you feel down for weeks, lose weight, don't sleep, etc. You might get diagnosed with "depression". The big diffrence with medecine is that the symptom IS the disease! That implies an interesting inversion that I recognized in this thread. You're down so you have depression becomes... You have depression, SO you are down.

There's another difference - with medical conditions, symptoms lead to diagnosis which almost always leads to some kind of treatment to cure or manage the condition.  There's an assumption that the condition needs action of some kind.

With so many of these new psychological disorders, diagnosis is so often used only to excuse the behaviour and allow the person to keep on behaving exactly as they have been.  The 'sufferer' doesn't seek any kind of treatment, they have a licence to keep on doing whatever they please, and get away with it.

For example, might be in a group who are talking about American Idol but since they do not watch the show they try to very abruptly change the subject or explain how stupid it is.

Changing the subject away from American Idol, or even denouncing it as stupid, is a symptom of a personality disorder?  Whee!  My personality is disordered to the max!

And yes, I noticed that I broke into the Narcissistic Personality Disorder thread to talk about myself. [;)]

I have to avoid analyzing the consequences of this too deeply, or the regress will overload my circuitry.  (It's very hard sometimes being an alien android impersonating a mere earthling.)

Edited to add: That was only to the first 500 digits, but I figure for earthlings' purposes, that should suffice.

Wait, you're supposed to continue computing indefinitely, while we sneak up and pull your plug... What kind of android are you, anyway?  Oh that's right, one that's too young to have watched the original Star Trek

Lordandmaster -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/26/2006 9:30:10 PM)

We contemporary models do not use plugs.  (Nor are we deceived by crude earthling ruses.)  When did you learn about alien life forms, the 20th century or something?  Obviously you are not up-to-date when it comes to Alpha Centauri biotechnology.

4u2spoil -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/26/2006 9:39:24 PM)

I second that. I had a regular friendship with someone who had MANY NPD traits and it was beyond an occasional mood swing or bad day. When I finally ended the friendship, I went through another few months of harassment before she finally ran out of steam and ideas for "revenge". Completely worth it to not have that type of cancerous personality around though.

Until you have been in sphere of one of these people you have no idea. They are not just selfish or have big ego's...these people are an empty shell..who hate themselves..with a vehemence unmatched by anything else. They need the people in their lives to reflect back the image they wish was them. They have no empathy for other humans, none. They are too good for damn near anything and every other person on the planet earth is a piece of shit not worthy to breathe their air. They always have some big huge "plan" going..that never goes anywhere. They are charming at first..omg are they charming..once they have you it starts..the little put-downs..then before you know full-blown rages like you have never seen..and it is ALWAYS your fault, if you were better they wouldn't be that way. Call it whatever you want these folks exist..not in huge numbers but they are pure hell. You do not leave a narcissist..he/she will leave you when you are no longer useful..but you never just leave a narcissist..they hunt you, torment you..you became a lifelong enemy or they turn on the charm and repeat the cycle..I have several of these t-shirts.

MistressLorelei -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/26/2006 9:57:12 PM)

I believe many of us in the bdsm realm could be considered by some to have a sexually dysfunctional personality disorder.

Some people are abundant in crudeness, rudeness, kindness, politeness, political extreme'ness'.. whateverness... and while an extreme or insufficient supply of any character trait could be problematic, I tend to think that most everyone could be labeled with some personality 'disorder' or another, but not all may have viable medical conditions.

I do not know how many people are aware of a personality disorder called Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It is basically (I am not a doctor so I am sorry if I butcher this), a person who has a self idealized image and belief in themselves that they are better or superior to everyone and searches out people and activities to give them external validation of their belief.

They are people who have to be the center of attention at all times. For example, might be in a group who are talking about American Idol but since they do not watch the show they try to very abruptly change the subject or explain how stupid it is. To them every boss and coworker is a moron and everything they do or talk about is phrased as vitally important or very noble.

They end up changing friends they hang out with every few years as they abandon them. They are quick to ask favors but never do favors for anybody and when confronted about something or a criticism they then go to personal and irrational attacks of the people confronting them.

The reason I bring this up is, I have had real life non D/s experience with a couple and in one case her parents tried to do an intervention for her.  I was wondering if anybody else has seen people with this disorder try to immerse themselves as Doms or Masters?

When I was active in a local community and several people I have corresponded with online have come off as very much having this disorder. I just think that maybe this lifestyle might draw people with the disorder as dominants in order to mistakenly find a sub or a slave to worship them and feed their addiction.

Please let me clarify one thing. I do not believe that you can be a Dom/Domme/Master/Mistress with this disorder. So I am in no way saying that a percentage of dominants have this. All I am saying is there might be some wolves in sheep’s clothing. To me these people that would be in the lifestyle almost certainly are without subs or slaves and/or go through them very quickly and always blame harshly the sub and slave for the failed relationship.

For me personally, I am always on the look out for this, because of my regular experience with a few narcissists that can be tough and painful.

lisa

You are not entirely correct miss.  First, this disorder is extremely rare; few P/pl will ever meet such a sufferer.

Here's a link from WebMD, which discusses the disorder, and points out the tremendous suffering it causes to the person who has it.

Dammit.  Mark up another psych disorder I need to get myself checked for.

CanadianGuy -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/27/2006 1:33:16 AM)

It's indeed a disorder.  Like the other personality disorders, there's no real treatment, other than managing the symptoms using strict behavioural therapy.  Generally, these people go through life with personalities so disorganized and damaging that they hurt many others in the process.  We've all met at least a couple people like this.  Narcissistic is bad... borderline, dependant, and histrionic are also quite hard to deal with IMO.

Kedikat -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/27/2006 2:24:07 AM)

I prefer the shorter terms. asshole, prick, bitch, when referring to others afflicted so..
But I'd prefer to be addressed by the more scientific and impressive term if you think it fits Me.

ExistentialSteel -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/27/2006 3:25:09 AM)

I don’t know if it is a certifiable psychiatric condition or not, but it is a trip to be around one. Much like being around a compulsive liar, it can almost be funny. They fabricate things to fit their story.

I’ve seen Doms this way. When it gets to be at the psychiatric disorder stage is when they start imagining they are some type of link to an ancient god or something and have the inherent right to be served.

DesertRat -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/27/2006 6:31:32 AM)

I don't see any reason why this would only be present in those considered dominant. Sure, that is what one would expect and would be the most likely context, but why couldn't a submissive be narcissistic to the point of impairment?

Bob

KatyLied -> RE: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (5/27/2006 6:35:35 AM)

Impairment is the key word.  I read with interest about manic-depression + narcissistic personality disorder.  There is a lot of info on the web about this.  The symptoms overlap and can also present co-morbid (co-existing).  For anyone who doubts there is narcissistic personality disorder....when you encounter it you will know it.  If it waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck....guess what?

Hello to all..
I just looked it up. Google shows lots and lots of research. The link below is to just one source found. Geez... hate to meet this guy! LOL

Note: I was a psych major and was going to go on to a Psy.D,  Clinical Psychology. Between the thought of the huge student loan, limited job opportunity,  and the relative low pay compared to MDs -  who can prescribe medication :  No thanks...

PS: especially to the large, mating, land beasts <smile>I do think psychology has insight to offer, but is an art, not an exact science, at least not a 'hard' science.

Nothing I could say was a documented case, but a few I have suspected of it.  Its somewhat predictable, particularly if you consider Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance.  Simply put, the person has an idealized image of themselves that has become central to their identity.  Faced with a reality that does not agree with this self image, they must either accept reality (and the painful consequences to themselves resulting) or avoid it.  One predictable method of avoiding reality is to attempt to structure their environment in such a way as to avoid this, avoid anyone who will disagree with their opinion.  A Master/slave or D/s relationship may appear as an excellent vehicle for this.  It is also likely predictable that such an individual will assume anyone outside of their "circle" is not of consequence and therefore can be ignored (they may rationalize that all "vanilla" people are simply ignorant of their lifestyle and therefore not fit to judge them, and then go on to screen out even large segments within the lifestyle following a similar logic to get rid of anyone who disagrees by invalidating their opinion).  However, its also probable that such a person might very well not be satisified by their slave's opinion (since they will likely be so controlling they'll control even what opinions the slave can voice), and thus will seek validation from an "equal" who agrees with that self image.  You can imagine the rollercoaster effect all this would have on people.

Keep in mind you should take most things you encounter or read online with a large grain of salt.  Its very easy for people to engage in narcissistic behavior here, even people who would normally not do so.  The internet creates an environment conducive to it.

quote:

For me personally, I am always on the look out for this, because of my regular experience with a few narcissists that can be tough and painful.

As someone else said, someone like this can be a Dom or Master, mainly because there is no other qualification for it, generally, in this lifestyle other than proclaiming that of yourself.  But, such a person will not be a very good Dom or Master, and in fact will probably do very poorly.  Their need to support, defend and prop up their idealized self image will inhibit them from functioning in may ways a dominant needs to to be successful.  They'll have difficulty socializing with others, accepting advice, learning from others.  They'll have trouble managing a submissive effectively because their perceptions will likely be distorted with irrational fears, paranoia and suspicions.  They may be close minded to new ideas from others, and obsessive about seeming "perfect".  In short, they'll likely be so overly obsessed with themselves they will not be able to effectively deal with the needs, emotions and behavior of a submissive... too much of their energy is focused inward.

BTW, all personality disorders are behavioral disorders.  They are not genetic in cause, they are environmental in origin.  They are treatable but most behavior disorders are difficult to treat.  This is in part due to the problem of getting a patient to accept that they have a problem.  A narcissist presents a particularly thorny problem because their very problem precludes them accepting they have a problem (it violates their self image, something they will rigorously defend).  If you can ever get them to accept that much, you're more than half way there because at that point that idealized self image shatters.  Then you have the mess of helping them pick up all the broken pieces of who they are.
