Not really.  The Blair Witch Project is actually a very solid horror film.  The problem is that it is a cerebral sort of horror that people either 'get' or they don't.  I love horror films such as BWP and have totally taken a liking to Paranormal Activity because of how simplistic but how the atmosphere sucks you in and makes every 'tame' movement (such as a tree branch randomly falling, or the door slowly closing by itself) feel like something bad is about to happen, but you don't know when.

see, i agree here. i've seen all the PA movies, and i really enjoyed them as an experience. no, there aren't blatant serial killers or CG demons or something like that, but the movies set up atmosphere like few other things do. atmosphere is really lacking in a lot of other modern horror movies. they figure they can just rely on blood and carnage or things like that, and it's not so much a manipulation of your emotions, but just "look at this horrible image" which is easy to do. it's like ambushing people with images of aborted fetuses to get them to scream. =p well duh, they're going to, because that image is disgusting. but meddling with someone's feelings in such a way where you can blow on the back of their neck and they shoot through the ceiling -- that's far more complex.

i did like the first Saw movie, though, because it had this kind of atmosphere. it was a lot more psychological. i wish that they'd just stuck to that, and left it alone, and never made any of the GAWD-AWFUL SEQUELS.

Exactly, that's why I hate the whole "SURPRISE, JACK IN A BOX SCARE."  It's like you at first flinch and go, "OH MY GOD FUCK THE PHONE" then in one second you go, "Oh... oh... well, that wasn't very scary.  It's just some guy in a stupid-looking costume."

For some reason it seems to me that low-budged horror films turn out to be much better than the ones that try too hard and end up being forgettable.

shivermetimbers -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 12:23:51 PM)

Nothing, but nothing tops "The Creeping Terror". It's so bad, it's not even good.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 12:28:04 PM)

I was really thoroughly unimpressed by PA. It did nothing for me. Saw on the other hand I loved. It didn't scare me but I enjoyed it immensely. Same with the Final Destination series.

Can't think of the title but it had Jeremy Irons in it. He was a pair of twin gynecologists. I kid you not! It's the one movie I EVER walked out of!

There are good bad movies....and then just BAD bad movies.

That is my number one BAD bad movie: it was called: Dead Ringers.  Sadistic gynecologists.  It was horrid.
Starship Troopers is on the list too. Giant roach aliens, bad acting and gratuitous gore.
Waterworld....tied only with the Postman... really. Kevin Costner was horrific in both.

In the GOOD bad movie department....movies that are so terrible they are AWESOME....
Strange Brew (with Bob and Doug Mackensie...I have the damn thing memorized)
Yellowbeard  (from the Monty Python folks)
The Pirate Movie (a take off of Pirates of Penzanze)
Repo Man
Clash of the Titans (the original, with Harry Hamlin and that ridiculous robotic owl Bobo)
Clerks.  (that may be a good movie...I love Clerks...but everyone else I know hated it...)
Office Space (like clerks. I LOVED this movie.  know a lot of folks who hated it)
Beavis & Butthead's movie.
South Park's movie.

edited to add:
Loved Stars Wars episode 4, 5 and 6 (the "originals") minus the ewoks.  Hated the first three episodes released  later--Jar Jar Binks must die.

OOhhh forgot to add in the Good Bad movie: Tank Girl

Look at the original Halloween and how there was no blood in it, but the music, camera-work, lighting, and emphasis on not "How will he kill" but "When will he kill" remained effective and in some ways has stood the test of time.

Same thing with the Elm St movies. The two (three?) made by Wes Craven are completely different from the rest. Then Freddy started talking, the blood flowed and the series took a dive.

NocturnalStalker -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 12:40:54 PM)

Never got into the Great Slasher Rush of the 80's so I don't know much about Freddy films (I always considered Myers to be the creepiest because of the simplicity of his mask being just a plain, expressionless face).  However I do like "fun horror" such as the first Scream, which is all but missing the characters looking to the camera and winking at the audience with how much they break the fourth-wall, or the Evil Dead trilogy.  Especially Army of Darkness.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 12:49:30 PM)

Lets not forget the Friday the 13th series.  Enough said.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 12:51:54 PM)

Army of Darkness ROCKED! You should check out Wes Craven's work. To me at least they don;t fall into the slasher category. Check out The Serpent and the Rainbow which sort of ties in voodoo and the reign of Baby Doc Duvalier in Haiti.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 12:53:03 PM)

Clerks. Office Space. Repo Man. ARE AWESOME!! Well, Clerks is film platinum. The other two are just awesome.

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta!

Ya know that was a Captain Kirk mask, right?

Worst movie: The Brown Bunny.

.

Totally agree   Couldn't beleive how many people hate those movies!

Clerks:  I still wonder how long it took to get the shot of that kitty taking a dump?  That was cinematic brilliance.  (don't judge me! it was hilarious!)

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 1:15:59 PM)

I SO know what we're watching on Thanksgiving!!

William Shatner is just a gift that keeps giving, clearly.

Delilya -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 1:23:12 PM)

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I do own it as I own most of the cult movies but that one is horrid.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 1:25:46 PM)

Yeah but it's so bad it's good. A true classic of the B movie genre.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 1:30:28 PM)

Any Chevy Chase movie.
Why did they remake The Thing?
Twilight.Piece of shit!

The remake of the Hitcher sucks donkey balls.

Born on the 4th of July.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Bad movies (11/12/2011 1:31:38 PM)

The Hitcher without RUTGER HAUER? Is utterly wrong.

MOST REMAKES ARE UTTERLY WRONG.

Oh, ouch.

Yes, it is, but, much like Starship Troopers, it was kind of supposed to suck. The first one, anyway.

I actually REALLY liked the new The Thing movie -- it's not a remake so much as a prequel. I thought it was really great how they lined it up withCarpenter's film. And that's like... my favorite movie of all time. I've watched it so many times I can't count. =p

I thought the new one was really sound, and respectfully done in relation to the original (yes, i know John Carpenter's version isn't REALLY the original, but as far as i'm concerned, it is =p)
