The creation of our household developed somewhat organically. Our poly family came about first, and D/s came with the addition of a mate who was both experienced and heavily involved in D/s. From there, it became a matter of figureing out how to make this work, how to integrate things, and how to account for the fact that some of our members were interested in the D/s side, and others weren't.
We spent the first couple of years figuring out how to make everything work. For models, we relied on the experience of one of our family members, who had outlived his three mates from a previous poly family, and a little bit from reading and research on intentional communities like the Oneida Project and The Farm. We also included some philosophical concepts from authors like Robert Heinlein and Mercedes Lackey, whose portrayal of alternative-lifestyle options opened our minds to some new possibilities that we hadn't considered. Our mate who brought us into the world of D/s also brought us a strong background in Gorean philosophy, so that played a role in how we worked out our structure as well.
To the best of my knowledge, there are few houses quite like ours (considering the way we've been shunned in many communities for our outrageous ideas and strange structure, it at least -seems- that this is the case.) If there are many, they are quite quiet and skillfully hidden (which is not necessarily unwise, considering *smiles*). We are relatively private people, ourselves, and I am pretty much the "Speaker" for our household, since the others prefer to stay behind the scenes and I don't mind standing on the receiving end of a flamethrower on a regular basis. I live on the edge of what is considered "normal" in so many areas of my life that if the flamethrower isn't aimed in my direction, I get downright -chilly-. *chuckles* We've recently begun explorations and taken some responsibilities in the newly-developing Klashaan concept community. It seems to have the potential to be a good fit, community-wise, for the way we already live. It's possible that we'll find some others who make their way there, and won't feel quite so much like a sunflower in the rose-beds.
