ORIGINAL: LillyBoPeep @hausboy -- thaaaaanks very much ^_^ When you say you earned your boots, is that a Leather thing? I only really want to learn to do it as just a new skill, and do it for friends if they need it. I really enjoy meticulous, detail-oriented stuff, too. =p Thanks for the tip on the colors, too -- I'm guessing it makes the color richer? Not so flat like just straight black would do? Yes on the "earned" thing. It's an old tradition. (not a requirement!) That's my thing too....I love doing my own boots...and the boots of those I serve...I'm not bootblack material. I just can't sit and do strangers' boots for hours on end. the colors: they do make the black "richer" and it also give it better shine/better gloss. Learned that from the bootblack at the Colonial Kink conference last year. Parade Gloss is controversial. I don't know a single bootblack who uses it, or will suggest using it. I was sworn off parade gloss not just by the bootblacks, but I heard the same orders from the cops, fire and military folks in my circles. I've heard it can build up a wax and needs to be stripped off...others claim it's "cheating"....and I've heard that repeated use can damage/crack the leather. So for me...I won't touch the stuff. Check out some of the military website forums--they talk a lot about using (or not using) parade gloss.
