It stops counterfeiters in two ways - it costs more to print them than they're worth.

That's not news really, they've been using those plasticy notes all over the world since the 80s. Travel broadens the mind, don't you know?

oh imo, it will be a while before the US does that.. they only just started putting purdy colors on their bills, Canada has had colored money as far back as i can remember... not that i am saying the US is a little behind or anything..
