ORIGINAL: Lucylastic Jst......this is i believe the article .. http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/obama-administration-loses-effort-to-make-school-lunches-healthier/2011/11/15/gIQAIgpdPN_story.html The USDA proposal, based on recommendations from the National Academies’ Institute of Medicine, would put a one-cup-per-week limit on the amount of white potatoes and other starchy vegetables served to schoolchildren. The proposal also would have nixed the favorable treatment granted to tomato paste. Currently, an eighth of a cup of tomato paste is credited with as much nutritional value as half a cup of vegetables and thus counts as one vegetable serving. That enables foodmakers to better market their pizzas to schools. Ahhhh. Thanks! I kow the pizza we serve counts as a whole grain and a protein, but I have never heard of the tomato paste thing. Our homemade marinara sauce counts as a veggie serving, if it is 1/2 cup. We give it with Cheese sticks. They did recently cut back on the breads we have to serve. Until this year, at breakfast, we had to give 2 slices of texas toast to meet the caloric guidelines. Slowly, things are getting better. Folks are realizing that the caloric intake needed by kids in the early 90's are not needed for the kids today. Michelle Obama is doing a lot to help that happen. I have seen more good things happen because of her, that her husband. Anyhow, sorry for the hijack. I just really get sick of School Nutrition being blamed for all that ails kids.
